    Default Power Metal bands?

So I've recently started listening to power metal stuff, and IMO its fucking awesome.

Mainly I've been listening to Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody of Fire and Fairyland, but don't really know of anything else like it.

Can you guys suggest some similar stuff?
I'm a keyboardist, and as such great synth/orchestral stuff is of high importance, but I'm open to all suggestions.

Try Luca Turilli (the guitarist from Rhapsodys band), Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Hammerfall (not too keen on them TBH), Stratovarius. Also, they're not Power Metal but try out Symphony X if you haven't already.

Well I really like Dragonforce, but I think their fifteen minutes was about a while ago. Fantastic guitar and pretty fun lyrics.

Also, whomever just mention Stratovarius, you sir, are my hero. Vagabond is just fantastic.

Awesome, I was downloading Symphony X and Stratovarius already, so I'll listen to them when I get up.
The other names had popped up and I'd had a listen but none seemed as good as the 2 I mentioned!

I'll check out Luca Turilli too.

    Thanks!

For Symphony X I'd recommend The Divine Wings Of Tragedy and Odyssey but all of their albums are awesome. Out of the rest I listed Blind Guardian (especially Nightfall in Middle Earth) and Kamelot deserve a good listen. They both have so many good songs.

As well as Luca Turilli and Rhapsody, he has another project called Luca Turilli's Dreamquest. It's kind of like Rhapsody with female vocals but not really. I much prefer his other stuff but it's worth a listen.

I'm just here to second (or third I guess) Symphony X. I love their synth work, I love the fact that they take from classical music to make their rock, I even like their vocals (which is pretty impressive for a metal band).

Thanks but that's not really the sort of thing I'm after. That has a more electronic and modern feel to it, the stuff I want is more fantasy style - think Lord of The Rings + Metal.

I'm really liking Symphony X, Just got the Paradise Lost album so far and I really like that, I'll certainly get older stuff!

DragonForce does suck, but if you're really getting into this then you should definitely check out at least Sonic Firestorm, or really just download Fury of the Storm. It was their only good effort, and it really is awesome.

I'm not sure if they are power metal but also check out Iced Earth. Their horror show album was beyond amazing!

Nightwish, Nightwish and Nightwish. Their new album Dark Passion Play is a bit poor to be honest, their stuff with their old singer is much much better. If you can try to get your hands on End Of An Era, its their last ever concert before they split up with their old singer and its fucking epic.

For stuff similar to what you're listening to, I generally have a hard time finding good stuff. It takes a lot of competence to make epic orchestral power metal. I highly recommend Virgin Steele's The House of Atreus: Act I and The House of Atreus: Act II. Don't bother with anything else they've made.

If you're willing to explore, I've been hooked on Stormwarrior recently. Viking-themed power metal with enthusiastic vocals. They have three full length albums, and they're all great. The latest one, Heading Northe, is easier to digest. More German power metal goodness can be found with Gamma Ray and Iron Savior.

Sweet! I wasn't expecting this thread to get as much help as it did.

    Thanks everyone!

Came in here specifically to recommend Stratovarius - one of my favorites. Fright Night is really their best album, so if you can get a hold of that, it's a great start.

Obviously album quality is better than you tube, but you should get the point.

Stormwitch (specifically 'Tales of Terror' album) is also really awesome. If you're looking for that really nu-metal sound, you might not like this bands very much. The audio here is tremendously bad, but you've got the picture:

    Twisted Tower Dire
    is worth a mention too.

And finally Encyclopaedia Metallum has a whole bunch of shit for you to look at.

This stuff is really original power metal and not as flowery and over the top as some of the newer stuff, but you might still appreciate it.

Also, it has some black metal sounding vocals at parts, but dude this shit is so fkn bad and worth a listen:

    Haggard:

    totally epic
