    Default 808s & Heartbreak

I went into this album kind of wanting to hate it, but I am actually growing to like it more and more. Graduation is simply amazing, but 808s has a totally different sound but still screams Kanye; and I'm still not sure how I feel about the whole album being sung using Auto Tune but it does expand on the overall feeling that the album exudes.

Surprisingly, I approve and enjoy it, and it's a good effort in its own right but he shouldn't continue in this direction.

I am of the opinion that auto-tune is for vaginas.

I would rather listen to someone miss a couple notes than hear fake perfection - it's just a pet peeve i suppose. A false need for adherence to aural perfection, which makes me crave normal, natural noise. I don't care if they're off for a note or two, because it is at least a genuine thing that requires some actual effort/talent.

By all accounts, Kanye's voice isn't all that bad, he is just too self-conscious about it, so he uses auto-tune for an image of perfection.

Ok, maybe I just hate things that are all image and no substance.

I haven't yet bothered to listen to this album, mainly due to the autotune bullshit. I've enjoyed all of Kanye's other albums (although Graduation was kinda weak) but I can't believe he autotuned this one. Totally takes away the emotion behind the vocals. Hopefully he won't keep this shit up on his future albums, otherwise I probably won't listen to it at all.

Kanye West hasn't had a good album since College Dropout. He's trying to be too trendy with this autotune bullshit and instead of singing or rapping, he just talks over top of it. How that qualifies as talent or entertainment is beyond me.

    I'm listening now.. it's alright.. I'd say College Dropout > Freshman Adjustment > Late Registration > Graduation > 808s

I hated it. It took him like three weeks to make the album and he admitted he made each beat in like 15 minutes. Its obvious he doesn't give a fuck.

Fuck Kanye. The guy seriously annoys the hell out of me.

    For my brother I got...

    Jay-Z - Blueprint
    Jay-Z The Black Album
    Jay-Z - Volume 1
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
    Common - Resurrection

We have the downloaded versions. Music sounds better to me when I know I bought the CD for some reason. He's also a big Jay fan.

808s is garbage. Need I cite Kanye's huge SNL failure to further make the case that he is NOT a real artist and has absolutely no talent? Ego will only take you so far but I think this is the end of the road.

While I won't argue that the guy is a serious douche, one of my favorite albums took three days to make, all the while the musicians were tripping on psilocybin mushrooms. I'm just saying that the duration of the recording process doesn't necessarily reflect quality. For example, Chinese Democracy was worked on and off again for, what, sixteen years? I've yet to hear the album, but I very seriously doubt that it is "sixteen years" good.

Yea, I do agree with you, but Kanye said in an interview that he just kinda put it together saying that whatever he made sold anyway so he didn't try to make it the best it could be. That pissed me off.

Yes, but 16 years is a point of diminishing returns. Generally, if you work on album for about 3 weeks, it is going to feel and sound rushed, which 808's did. I didn't really like the direction he took it in, although he shows promise as being someone who can do his own hooks fairly well.

If you take the extra time to work and shape an album; being an artist and shaping it to be 'just so,' the time, quality and attention will be reflected in the work that you do, and your fans will appreciate it. While there are exceptions to the rule, generally speaking, 21 days does not an album make. I find some bands put together a shitty album after having a year to make it.

Madlib made Quasimoto - The Unseen in 7 days tripping on shrooms for the 7 days straight and it's a classic hip hop album. Beats and rhymes are great.

I'm pretty sure it's impossible to trip on shrooms from 7 straight days... you'll get sick and throw up after 2 straight days of doing it.

Listen to it, it's pretty good, laid back. Takes a minute to get used to his voice but after a few spins you'll love it.

By the way you have to understand Quas and Madlib are the same person. Quas is his alter ego. You can probably google about it and understand it more.

babar you listen to terrible music.

And I've actually become indifferent to 808s, I was being rather optimistic and generous when I made this thread.

Well he can say that, but I'm pretty sure that it's impossible to take shrooms for 7 days. There's too many toxins in it for one person to handle that often, unless he ate them even though he was puking his brains out.

I've been on a Lee Morgan/Coleman Hawkins kick lately. But Don Ellis was undoubtedly the master.

I think there's a jazz band for anyone.

John Zorn's bands, especially Naked City, kick ass.

I think people just think that's what they want. There's a pretty good jazz club in my city and I've taken people there who normally wouldn't check out that kind of thing (generally my emo friends). They come away thinking the place is great.

I mean, I'm no jazz afficianado. I'm relatively ignorant about the subject and I'm not the kind of musician who has any interest in learning/playing jazz either. However, it's still one of my favourite genres and the jazz albums I do own (hard-bop, swing, mainstream/pop, bossa-nova and free-jazz mostly) get played quite a lot.
