Default Albums everyone should listen to before they die.

In the interests of discovering new music/bands to listen to....everyone post 5 albums they believe everyone should listen to before they die.

It's a pretty difficult choice for me personally, however....in no particular order:

    1) Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
    2) Led Zeppelin - Led Zep IV
    3) The Beatles - Sgt Peppers
    4) The Pixies - Surfer Rosa
    5) Husker Du - Zen Arcade

    1) Alice in Chains-Unplugged
    2) Tool-Lateralus
    3) Metallica-...and Justice For All
    4) Rage Against the Machine-The Battle of Los Angeles
    5) Britney Spears-...Baby One More Time

    (no order)

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
    Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced?
    Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (after which you're allowed to mock her for her personal life)

Erm...I'm not entirely happy with that list but it will do for now.

Here's my top 5 stand up albums (which I found much easier to compile - even if it's based around my current listening trends)

    1. Lenny Bruce - The Carnegie Hall Performance
    2. Bill Hicks - Arizona Bay
    3. Demetri Martin - These Are Jokes
    4. Maria Bamford - How To Win!
    5. Mike Birbiglia - Two Drink Mike

Fuck, there's still so many I want to add to that list as well (Daniel Tosh, Doug Stanhope, Nick Swardson to name a few). Well, it will do.

    Fix'd.
Honestly this thread has been pretty good so far. I've seen a lot of good albums listed that aren't normally considered to be "must listen" albums. Some of them I'm going to listen through again because I pretty much forgot about them though.

Uh, I can't think of anything else. I don't know if these are "must listen" albums but they are my favorite. Both are concept albums.

I'm not allowed to rep you again yet but you deserve it because that's a very underrated album.

I think I prefer Original Pirate Material in terms of songs but this one wins artistically.

The first 4 in the OP are typical Rolling Stone article answers but I still basically agree with them.

Thriller wasn't a bad choice. It's still not even MJ's best album.

While I enjoy Arcade Fire as much as the next person, I don't see how they're ground-breaking in any way.

I would definitely not put it in a best rap albums list either, unless it was best 100 or something. Way too much filler material.

    My List:

    1. Cunninlynguists - A Piece of Strange
    2. Tonedeff - Archetype
    3. Unknown
    4. Unknown
    5. Unknown

There are plenty of other great albums, but I can't even come close to thinking of five that everyone needs to listen to. Those two are extremely important albums, especially the first in that it is the most complete album I've ever heard, where you feel like it's blasphemous to NOT listen to the entire album the whole way through. The second one is just amazing in its variety but still staying focused as an album.

I can't really think of anything else that feels like a full complete album with any sort of worthwhile storyline or melodies throughout that everyone MUST listen to. So yeah, those are my two. Although I'm almost positive Chico & The Man with Tonedeff and Kno (production) will be added to this list once it comes out this year. I doubt any other album ever to come out up to that point will be able to touch it in any way whatsoever in terms of sheer amazingness and quality.

Without searching extensively here is my list:

    Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
    Beatles - Abbey Road
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
    Grizzly Bear - Yellow House

I didn't include Pink Floyd because it's hard to choose a single album. I once would have said Animals but now I wouldn't be able to decide. Also didn't include Elliott Smith because I can't see everyone enjoying that.

Right, but I think the two albums I listed are very good. I know that you aren't exactly directing the statement towards me.

About the two albums I listed:

    Gatsby's American Dream - Volcano

It's very difficult to classify the genre of Seattle-based Gatsby's American Dream. Their music is fairly diverse, even withing a single album. It's easy to dismiss the band since the vocals sound a little like Panic at the Disco and Fallout Boy, but believe me, Gatsby's American Dream is much more talented. The music is usually intricate and the lyrics are always interesting.

"To date, Volcano is Gatsbys' most significant album, and, as a concept album, the most thematically-focused. It revolves around the theme of humans emotions and their similarities to a volcano. Elaborating on this theme, the album explores the story of Pompeii, the ancient Roman city that was both lost to and preserved by a volcanic eruption." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatsbys...nd_the_Volcano)

I really like this album for all the literary and pop culture references from Lord of the Flies to the video game Fable to Jurassic Park. Every time I listen to this album I discover something new, either lyrically or musically. Among punk and alternative music magazines, Volcano has received all positive reviews.

The Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free

Mike Skinner, aka The Streets, is a British rapper.

"A Grand Don't Come for Free is a concept album. In the story, the protagonist loses £1000, or a grand in slang terms. In the first track on the album, "It Was Supposed to Be So Easy", he plans out a series of seemingly simple events for the day, including returning a rented DVD and taking out some money from a bank machine, but it all starts to go wrong when a passing car splashes him with water, then he discovers the DVD is not in the case and still at his house and when he comes home he cannot find the thousand pounds, and his television is broken." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Grand..._Come_for_Free)

This is an album that must be listened to all the way through at least the first time. If you don't you might not think A Grand Don't Come for Free deserves to be listed. There are very few songs that could be considered singles or are that catchy, but that's because the album focuses mainly on the story. The album has been critically acclaimed, however it hasn't gotten the attention it deserves in the United State.

You'd probably recognize them if you heard one of their songs. It's the band that everyone has heard of, everyone has heard their music, but nobody seems to put the name and music together. The song that comes to mind that most everyone knows of is Shine. Some more of their popular work includes Heavy, The World I Know, Where the River Flows, Precious Declaration, December, Breathe, Gel, Perfect Day...that's about all that I've got off the top of my head. Excellent band though, Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid is definitely a good pick for must hear albums.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to djwolford again.

How is it compared to their debut album? I can't get enough of The Big Come Up at the moment.
The fiery red Torino rolled to the curb, we hit the pavement ready for action.

I'd like to point out that only one of those bands claims a Christian allegiance...and that's Collective Soul.

Justice and M83 are mostly electronica/rock.

The Cab are alternative and they swearz0reds.

    Copeland is indie rock.

i wouldn't put an album of theirs on such a list either, but everyone should listen to an energetic live recording before they die, and arcade fire is a fine example

although Lifted has better songs overall, people should listen to Fevers and Mirrors over it because the feverish vocals and sounds really set the tone
