Default American Idol: Yay or nay?

There are plenty of famous artists out there who flat out despise American Idol. Paul Mccartney, Elton John and for the more modern era, the Gorillaz. They feel that by using a voting system to get a record deal, it is distracting the artist from their art, their practice and therefore, producing "counterfeit" music. I can see their point. How many great artists like Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, and Buddy Holly had to perform dive after dive after dive until they honed their talents enough to make it big?

I can see how the older generations dislike this TV show. American Idol is a shortcut around all of the hard work it takes to be discovered. You get past a few judges, survive the "drama" of being on stage, dish out your talent so phone companies can make some quick cash, and then at the end of the show, get fame and a record deal. But nowadays, faster is better right? Can't you hone your skills after you get the prize? Is it best to get your foot in the door by any means necessary and then iron out the details? With MP3's, Itunes, and the internet, the days of submitting a tape or CD to a radio station and hoping some big wig record executive is listening is over.

So, what do you guys think? Is whoring out some unrevised musical talent on shows like American Idol a justifiable means to an end? Or do TV shows that try to capitalize on desperate musicians and target a young audience that doesn't know any better truly pollute the airwaves and lower the quality of music?

Nay, American Idol is far too commercialized to get my support.

Hell no. Whenever my friends refer to the show as their "guilty pleasure," I fucking smack them.

Honestly, it's not really the show that gets to me, it's the people that watch it. I've watched one full episode with a large group of people and didn't find the show painful; I wouldn't watch it on my own time, but it didn't kill me. The crowd, however, angered me greatly. Talentless hacks surrounding the television made snide remarks about how they could perform ten times better than the current contestant (this was at the point of the show when all of the "awful" singers had been weeded out).

    Please.

the gains you get from winning american idol are pretty minimal

ok, so fantasia and others (i can't rememeber any other names) got a record deal (oh in canada so did kalan porter) so we saw commercials telling us to buy their CD for about a month, and then they disappear off the face of the earth

Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are the only ones I can think of who were on American Idol and got somewhere because of it.

    Oh and Chris Daughtry.

I think that this show is sending a horrible message to many young aspiring musicians of today. This show tells them that in order to be viewed as successful, that they must in a way lose their individuality, and perform what the media has defined as popular music today (and mainstream music has gone to complete SHIT in the past 5-10 years. God damned Clear Channel Radio).

I guess there's another way of looking at it. If you want to be famous - go on American Idol. If you are serious about your musical passions - follow your own path.

Sorry for the rant, but this type of shit really pushes my buttons. Talent should not be based on how many millions of brainwashed radio zombies text in and vote for your song on some retarded show.

Ruben Studdard is actually worse off because of this show. He's bankrupt.

If American Idol produced good musicians who played good music I wouldn't mind them, but so far as I can tell Kelly Clarkson was the only Idol winner/spawn with even a modicum of musical ability so let it burn.

Modern country music does not count as music as far as I am concerned.

See, despite all this season after season is still on the air! It's mind boggling how so many let these untalented hacks slaughter music!

Wow. It really impresses me how people never change. Music is just as bad and as talentless and as produced as it's always been. It's just that now they're doing it on TV and charging you for phone calls at the same time.

    That's really the only difference.

American Idol is the worst show ever.

I absolutely cannot stand people who are like "OMG, AMERICAN IDOL IS COMING ON, I CAN'T MISS IT". I just want to slap them.

Well, I mean, this can be disproved with technology alone. It isn't even subjective, technologically the level of production we are capable of today is far beyond what was capable back when popular music was good.

Production levels may have improved but that doesn't mean they've increased. Not in the way that I mean anyway.
