Default Turntable, no sound from speaker, faint sound from table

OK, so I have a Pioneer PL 514 turntable with an Ortofon OM 5e cartridge elliptical stylus. Completely compatible together. I have a phono preamp that I have tested, and it works.

    Problem:

I hook everything up, balance it, set the needle down.... no sound from my speakers, faint sound from the table itself. No clue as to why. The turntable is from 1978, is there any way that possibly just the wires are old and need replacing, or what?

    Please help!

Could be the wiring, could be the needle, could be a lot of things.

The faint sound coming from the table itself, if you listen closely does it sound at all like the music that should be playing?

The sound from the table itself is actually from the needle running over the record grooves - cartridges have mics inside that amplify that faint sound you can hear. I am not expert but common sense to me would say that either your cartridge isn't correctly docked, or your wiring is bad somewhere along the line. It's obviously reading the record since you can hear the faint sound.

Brand new cartridge and needle, and the sound is of record. I have no clue as to how to deduce the problem

BTW 100th post!!! and its about records.... or at least a turntable lol

Ok well great it is a new cart and needle, however your turntable is still 30 years old. Perhaps the cart isn't connecting in well (spray some air duster to it?) or the wiring is bad. Did the table work before the new cart/needle?

Wasn't able to test it before, as the stylus on the old cart was broken, and I wasnt about to pay 45 dollars for a new stylus that is an aftermarket part.

figured it out, apparently the colours for channels were different from the old cart to this one, so I had to place the wires in different places on the cartridge to get the right signal from it

You figured that out and yet couldn't work out what the 'faint sound from the table itself' was, I am dumbfounded.

The colours for the new cartridge dont match the same as the old cartridge, I mean we are talking a gap in technology here that is 31 years. But I figured the cartridge was working fine considering the faint sound, I just couldnt figure out why it wasnt getting past that stage. I have it all figured out now and listening to records.
