    Default Classical Music

So before I get into my favorites I think I should ask whether or not there is a good fan base of classical music on this site. I've noticed that there are no discussions on classical music. Anyone care to share their favorite composers, performers, or any great situations that got them into classical music, whether it be a hobby or lifestyle, or what have you. I'm always looking for new recordings of things or anything interesting at all.

By the way, kudos to whomever named this "Aural Fixations."

I played piano and viola when I was younger, so no I do not like classical music.

I play trombone so I have played in many orchestras, wind bands, brass bands, quartets, quintets. You name it. I also sang in a fair few choirs so yes I do enjoy classical music.

A few favourites would have to be Holst, Tchaikovsky, Handel and Sibelius. Although that is just what I'm listening to most at the moment. I have about 300 classical vinyls which I don't listen to enough.

That's awesome. I'm actually a music student and my main instrument is trombone. I'm also a big fan of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. I feel like the Russian style of composition suits the trombone very well, keeping in mind that they are beautiful compositions, but can have a harsh sound to them at times.

I've never heard any Sibelius. Is he modern? I've heard of notation software called Sibelius but I've never heard any music written by a composer of that name.

And KT, why do you dislike classical music because you played viola and piano. I just started playing piano and it's made classical music grow on me even more.

I've always loved classical music, although I haven't ever really explored more than the most famous composers that got me into it. I tend to listen to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner. As you can tell, German composers make up most of my listening.

Well Mozart was actually Austrian and he is considered an Italian composer as he composed most of his works in Vienna. However Germany took over the lead from Italy around the time Bach died in 1750 and the baroque period ended. I still listen to Mozart and Beethoven all the time. I just cant let it go.

Wagner wrote some good music. You should look into works by Robert Schumann if you are interested in Wagner. I would suggest anything from the song cycle known as Winterreise. Not sure if you're into vocal or instrumental music but these are great songs. Listen to it while reading the translation.

You cannot possibly be a music student and not know that your composition software is named after a very famous composer.

I got tired of playing classical music. I mean there are pieces that I really like, but as a whole I don't listen to classical music. The only piece I can think of off hand that I really like is Pachelbel's Canon but that's mainly because it reminds me mostly of Evangelion and also that one time in sectionals when I got stuck playing the incredibly boring 3rd violin.

Your go to piece is Cannon in D? Jesus, no wonder you quit. That's the most generic classical music there is.

the first disc of Evangelion Symphony is sick

on the second disc there's a rap section over Pachelbel's Canon which is lame

I've never heard any of his music, nor do I know what era he is from. Give me an F in music history if you wish.

Cannon in D is the most used chord progression ever. UGHHH....

What is his first name. I googled Sebelius and got a Kathleen Sebelius, the democratic governor of Kansas. Second female governor of the state actually.

You could all start spelling Sibelius correctly, then you might be able to figure it out.

I don't know. I just think they are good examples of how most popular music is pretty much the same.

Borodin and Mussorgsky are also good Russian composers. Pictures at an Exhibition, Promenade was the song that got me playing trumpet.

Jean Sibelius was Finnish, famous for Finlandia (bit of a giveaway) mostly, but his finale to symphony no 5 is pretty epic for brass.

I spend allot of time listening to early choral composers from the 16th and 17th centuries such as Luis de Victoria and Allegri if that counts as classical.

The only 'epic brass' I like is the Coronation Street theme.

I have no idea what just happened to my original post but it got all half deleted. Anyway, I think you would technically have to classify 16th and 17th century music as Late Renaissance/Early Baroque music. The classical period was only from 1750-1820. I guess it's all called classical music anyhow.

I'll have to give a listen to some Borodin. I'm not familiar with his music at all, but Mussorgsky is great. And if you like epic brass you should listen to Gustav Mahler. Great music for the trombone and the trumpet as well.

Sibelius was one of those 19th century Nordic nationalistic composers, along the lines of Grieg. Sibelius has, for whatever reason, recently become popular again. His most well-known composition is probably the Finlandia suite.
