Consider paying an instructor. I learned various instruments a lot faster by working with someone than by working by myself.

I got my allowance but I spent it all on ice cream
Yeah if you're serious about learning how to play the piano correctly and you would like to get really great at it, I'd hire an instructor, especially if you've never had any formal music education. One thing about teaching yourself anything really is that often you will be unaware of the mistakes you make. I've never personally paid for piano lessons (my parents did) but I'm under the impression that it's fairly cheap.
However, if you just want to play for a little fun, the piano is pretty easy, and I know a few people who have successfully taught themselves to play.
