Default Teaching yourself to play piano?

Ive been wanting to learn an instrument, and for some reason, I really like the piano. Ive heard its pretty easy to learn the basic stuff since everything is layed out in front of you in an orderly fashion, but I wanted to get some input from anyone who may have done it before.

I plan on just picking up a cheap keyboard and learning the basics, and if I stick with it, Ill upgrade later.

    The cover alone recommends itself:

    lol

So anyways, I ordered a 61 key keyboard. Ill have it in about a week, so I can start learning. If I can stick with it then Ill get an 88 key grand piano style keyboard.

I used the Bastien books when I was a kid. Even though I suck at playing the piano, the books themselves were pretty good. There's a series for adults called the Older Beginner Piano Course.

But what sort of music do you want to play? Do you want to be able to play from standard notation? Do you want to play from fake books? Do you want to do the sweet stylings of jazz improve?

    Or learn chopstix?

Anyway, I'm sure that in any case you're going to start off in the same place, since you have to get skills like fingering down.

The guitar is pretty easy to pick up and play. If you have an ear for music though you could do anything. Just make sure you learn theory instead of just playing random shit that way you actually know how to play.

I considered guitar, but for some reason, the piano has always interested me. Plus I recently started listening to stuff like Chopin and George Winston.

Consider paying an instructor. I learned various instruments a lot faster by working with someone than by working by myself.

Yeah if you're serious about learning how to play the piano correctly and you would like to get really great at it, I'd hire an instructor, especially if you've never had any formal music education. One thing about teaching yourself anything really is that often you will be unaware of the mistakes you make. I've never personally paid for piano lessons (my parents did) but I'm under the impression that it's fairly cheap.

However, if you just want to play for a little fun, the piano is pretty easy, and I know a few people who have successfully taught themselves to play.

five finger patterns really help get your dexterity down at first. google/youtube it, there's tons of free instruction online. Learning your scales won't hurt either, it'll help you get switching over your fingers down when you start to play actual music. also, PRACTICE WITH A METRONOME. It helps, forreal.
