I'm so proud of my cat Frankie. He normally likes to stay inside and only goes outside maybe 2-3 hours a day. I didn't think he was interested in hunting. My previous cat usually stayed outside at least 8 hours a day and during her prime would leave a dead animal at the door once a week.

    Ugh.

Congratulations on having a cat that contributes to the annual massacre of North American song birds that have no natural defenses against cats.

Now that my cat is living with my parents, they have a nice big safe backyard for him to roam about. They let him out too much for my liking, but he hasn't shown tendencies of killing birds at least.

I disagree with letting domesticated cats roam around outside by themselves.

Here's a good example of why:
    https://plus.google.com/118176131533...ts/4xVLqrXJHxx

The guy lets an old cat out who's on a special diet and needs daily medication, and he's sad when the cat hasn't come home after 4 days.

My previous cat was about 10 years old (and healthy) when she disappeared. Yeah I was sad when I realized she wasn't coming back but she loved being outside. I wasn't going to stand between her and her freedom.

Also I watched a documentary about house cats and it claimed that house cats are only partially domesticated and if left on their own they can survive and prosper without people (unlike dogs who specifically rely and seek out humans)

I have a cat who's somewhere between 17-19 years old, is on a special diet, and has only been outside a handful of times.

My cat used to bring purple flowers to me, would set the in front of me. Probably because they smelled like dead animals.

pretty much this. Even things like meowing is kind of an aberration. Meowing is what kittens do for attention, fully grown wild cats will rarely, rarely make that noise.

What you're doing with a cat is forcing it to be completely dependant on you. I'd rather it be outside and have a decent life than have it life twice as long in a little box. It just doesn't seem right to me to have an indoor cat kind of relationship with a cat.

Keeping a 'house cat' indoors, and declawing them, is like taking a Liger, and removing it's magical powers.

My Dad, and his wife, have 4 cats, all missing their front claws saying "we don't want them messing up the furniture, and if they get outside, they can still protect their selves with their back claws"....you dumb fucks, the front claws are for gripping, and attacking, it's back claws help with traction, those cats, if they ever make it outside, will not live long enough to enjoy a day in the wild... you have given them a death sentence if you ever leave your door open long enough for one to escape.

I have 6 cats. only 2 are declawed. One was declawed when I got her (the 17-19 year old) and the other is front declawed because he wouldn't stop scratching at anything-and-everything including me.

The others are good with their claws and use scratching posts.

Cats are an introduced species that do not belong in North America, and relatively recently their population has soared.

Like I said, native bird species have lack defenses against cats, who are extremely versatile predators. They are the most abundant carnivore in North America, and there's nothing natural about that.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/29/sc...pagewanted=all

Yeah I know you'll just reply with some stupid flippant response, but think about this: in surprisingly violent Mediterranian Europe, millions of migratory song birds are killed by human hunters just for fun.

If you think it's reprehensible for some adult men to go around shooting small birds for sport, to the point of threatening these species with endangerment, people are doing the same thing here with their cats as proxies.

As for meowing "not being natural" and "something only kittens do," adult cat behavior is basically kitten behavior not switched off. For instance, that "kneading the dough" sort of motion that cats do when they're coming in to cuddle is what kittens do on their mama cats to encourage milk flow.

Yeah, adult wild domestic cats don't meow so much, but hey, cats and dogs have to do things with humans that they wouldn't have to with other members of their species.

Well, this is the thing: what kind of balance do you want to strike with a pet? How much of it will be the pet being itself and how much of it is you taking a living thing and projecting your desire onto it until it conforms to your vision of what you want it to be? This is why I'm not a big fan of housecats, because the very nature of bringing that animal into your house and keeping it locked up until it doesn't know what the outside world is is basically stockholm syndrome. That's kind of fucked up if you think about it (too much). Frankly, it makes me think of that Toddlers in Tiaras show.

I'm not really talking about introduced species and non-natural predators, I'm talking about the nature of the animal itself. You're absolutely right in that, technically, it's not natural for a cat to roam around in North America (unless it's a lynx or a cougar). But it's less natural (to me) for a cat to not roam around at all.

For dogs, which are pack animals anyways, it's completely different.

I'm too afraid to let my cat outside. She's tiny and there are sooo many strays... and cars.

I don't know what I would do if I came home and saw her on the road.

    This is a good point.

Cats will always come back so I mean it's not a bad thing to let them out.. but whateves this house is big enough for her to enjoy herself.

(I felt the need to defend myself because now I feel bad )

We used to have cats in the neighborhood. My neighbor's dogs killed every one of them. My black lab hunts for toys but doesn't actively try to kill other animals. He just plays with them until they're dead. Some of his catches include a box turtle (which probably survived), two moles he dug up, and various birds and geckos. He's outside now, probably laying under the truck like normal.

I use to have 2 cats a big black cat and a small calico cat, the calico wasn't very fast or agile and the black one was. One day I heard a loud cat screaming in the back yard at night which ended very quickly. After that me and my family notices our calico was missing, no trace of her and our black cat wouldn't go outside for days. We heard from one of our neighbors a couple weeks later that animal control found a nest of coyotes behind another neighbors house and said there were apparently some dead animal carcasses their including a few cats. So it's safe to assume that coyotes killed my cat.

You're completely twisting the issue so you can justify harboring an animal that's wrecking the environment.

It's not about projecting your desires onto an animal. It's not a matter of balancing what's "natural" with what isn't.

It's a matter of environmental destruction due to an introduced, invasive species.

If you really think all this, then cats shouldn't have been brought to any area outside of the range of their wild ancestor, and outside this area their presence should be removed through mass sterilization.

That is, if there really is no compromise possible.

no, i'm ignoring the environment because i live in a fucking suburb and that doesn't count as the fucking environment because it's all paved roads and additional bullshit.

what i'm taking into account is the nature of the animal that i say i own.
