People can't be expected to care about something they aren't connected to. If my mom were to die tomorrow you would not be sad, because what's it to you? When someone becomes a celebrity they become connected to us, for better or worse, and humanity tends dislike when any connection is severed, even when it is meaningless.
Nicaragua isn't as impoverished as you may believe, having been one of the few Central American countries where I have spent significant amounts of time.
Needless to say, Nicas or other impoverished nation inhabitants aren't in our general Monkey Sphere.
