i mean we have had ethnic gypsies living in my home town. for example some long time ago some roma family had a viewing at a funeral home, and apparently they took this as an opportunity to have a big chicken feast. the room was completely trashed afterwards.
also my great-grandmother never returned to italy because a roma fortune-teller told her that she would die over water. it turned out that she died while sitting on a steam-heat radiator, which is ironically filled with water.
oh and i've seen them begging all over italy. for instance, i remember seeing this one woman looking so forlorn when she was begging for money, but then another day smiling and playing with a child. i don't know why those lousy people just can't get fucking jobs instead of taking up their "traditional professions" of begging and stealing. yeah, there's terrible racist attitudes toward them, but unfortunately a lot of them do conform to some degree to their stereotypes.

Also, I'm hardly being fair... the greater crisis isn't how a lot of gypsies are being stereotypically criminal and... err... mendicant. The greater crisis is the great deal of difficulty gypsies have integrating into society and how marginalized they are, and obviously the latter issue is related to the other. They are still the target of surprisingly racist campaigns that smack of practices which most people would think have been phased out against ethnic minorities in the 20th century.
I was just being glib in my above post. Nonetheless, if these beggars are the most visibly and obviously ethnic gypsies, they just help enforce the stereotypes against them.
