Default I just got back from a 12,000km roadtrip across Canada and half of America

I'll be answering questions that you won't have about it.

Also, I went through Seattle, South Dakota and stayed in Chicago for a night while Oklahoma got hammered by tornadoes and heard my first tornado siren in Rockford.

Casual Discoursians of America - What awesome things did I miss on my road trip?

Hmm... We saw a bear on the side of the road between Banff and Jasper, but I think the real winner was the hotel we stayed at in Edmonton. It was on Whyte ave and called the Strathcona; I'm pretty sure it used to be an hourly room kind of place (perhaps it still is?). We ended up having to pay a little more than the base price because our room had a bathroom. When we get inside, the room does have a bathroom, but there's no shower head in the bathtub, no shower curtains and no fuckin door on the bathroom. I had diarrhea at this point, likely from overconsumption of caffeine, so every time I had to go, I had to run down the hall to the smelly old public bathroom. Blankets had burnholes, place was filled with weirdoes, but it made up for it in other ways.

Sort of? I got a job in northern B.C. and drove out there to work and then drove back. This was purely a pleasure roadtrip with my gf to head out to Vancouver and back and see some sites.

I did! I found out Wisconsin really, really likes cheese - every rest stop on the road had pamphlets for going to watch people make cheese. What the heck, Wisconsin?!

Way out of our way. We never spent longer than 2 nights in any place (even that only happened twice) and we made it back to Toronto, after driving all night, about 4 hours before she had to start her new job.

Banff has some sweet things to do, if you're at least a little outdoorsy. If you don't mind going far out of your way, take the ice roads to Jasper from Banff: it's some of the most dramatic scenery in North America. If you're heading up to Jasper, there's a HI Hostel beside a gondola that has one of the best views I've seen in my life of the range with a short hike to the actual summit. Make sure you bring water/food because you will get tired up there, but the restaurant built into the gondola area is pretty decent, if a bit pricey. Stop by Lake Louise for a little hike. Go to Radium Hot Springs and take a bath or something. There's an easy hike with a rewarding view at Tunnel Mountain as well. For more suggestions, talk to outdoorsy looking Calgarians - most of them are pretty familiar with Banff and they'll tell you the best places to go.

In Calgary, I can't really say. I spent most of my time out in Banff or visiting friends at their place. There's a location in NW part of Calgary called Kensington (hilariously) that was a wicked coffee shop called the Roasterie. I highly, highly recommend that place. It's cool as all fuck, the coffee is delicious (and roasted on site) and it's a good place to hang out. If you can arrange rafting down the Bow River, that's something to do, too.

Fun new story - When we were leaving Chicago around 9pm, I was running low on gas, so I pulled off the 94 freeway onto 111th street, which I'm assuming is some kind of ghetto. the shut down gas station on the side of the highway wasn't enough of a red flag, apparently, so I went a little further down the road into the scariest gas station I've been to. Anyone familiar enough with Chicago to tell me where the fuck I was?

You were south of South Chicago. You went past the Really, Really Bad Place<tm> and stopped in the Really Bad Place<tm>

I read stories about these things in the US. Ganglands. Bulletproof glass protected Burger King counters. Service stations where the attendant will pretty much just tell you to gtfo before you're mugged. I can't even imagine going through a place where I felt in danger. I hope they're very isolated areas.

Edit: I missed DaiTengu's link. WHAT THE FUCK over a thousand victims to shootings and it's only July. Why has gun legislation not been changed decades ago?

My legs were bloody too, but from bug bites over the hoodoos at Drumheller.

We hiked up Sulphur Mountain and up Johnston Canyon to the Ink Pots. No time for Lake Louise or Jasper.

Because criminals don't give a fuck about gun legislation. Let's take England for example. I know most personal firearms are illegal there, and the criminals are the only people with guns there. They could ban all guns in the US, that'd just take 'em out of law-abiding citizen's hands and leave them with the criminals. Because criminals don't give a fuck about laws(I'm a criminal, granted, just a drug criminal so those are the laws I don't care about... but I have sold guns before, to make extra money).

I think most of the shootings in Chicago were done by gang members and shit, banning guns in any way would not affect them at all.

1-3: Drumheller hoodoos: Bottom, climbing, top. Barely anyone went up to the top; we probably wouldn't have considered doing it if we didn't see people up there at the beginning.

4: Johnston Canyon Lower Falls (1.1 km). There's a short tunnel that gets you close to the bottom of the falls.
5: Johnston Canyon Upper Falls (1.6 km from Lower Falls).
6-9: Ink Pots (3.1 km from Upper Falls).

10-12: Sulphur Mountain, bottom and top. The last picture shows how puny that thing you climbed (Tunnel Mountain) is.
