From the source I am looking at, Obama got roughly 57 million votes inf the popular vote and McCain got about 51 million votes in the popular vote.
I think the gap between Kerry and Bush was much larger in the 2004 election.
Not quite, in '04 Kerry got 59,027,478 and Bush got 62,039,073 a difference of just over 3 million. (numbers from 270towin.com) CNN's numbers for this year has Obama at 63,859,336 and McCain at 56,377,274. A difference of about 7 and a half million.
