Default Darwin's 200th birthday biological quiz! Yay!

In honor of Darwin's 200th birthday (Feb. 12, 2009), let's have a bio trivia quiz thing. Contribute questions and answer previously posed ones in spoilers. without looking up the answers.

I'll start off this orgy of biological scientific fun:

What are the 3 defining characteristics of mammals?

    Hints:

my biology course would tell me to say multicellular organisms and heterotrophic (or auto, I can never remember which is which)

but i'm sure it's either more complicated or more simple

edit: that and both of those are not posessed only by mammals...

my biology course is fuckin useless

    look it up

EDIT: I looked it up for you
There are actually several different characteristics of mammals that do set them apart from any other type of animal out there today. Here are a few of those characteristics to be aware of.

Characteristic #1 - Females Product Milk - First of all, one of the defining characteristics of mammals is that the females actually produce milk for their babies. Females that are mammals have a special sweat gland that has been modified, and when they go through pregnancy, they begin to product milk for their young.

Characteristic #2 - Fur or Hair - Another one of the defining characteristics of mammals is that they at some time will have some type of fur or hair during the existence, although they don't necessarily have to have hair or fur for their entire life. This is yet another characteristic that is unlike any other type of animal out there today.

Characteristic #3 - Single Lower Jaw Bone - You'll also find that another characteristic that sets the mammals apart from other animals is that they only have a single lower jaw bone. You'll find that all other animals have multiple bones in their lower jaw, which gives it a different appearance. So, this is another important characteristic that you should be aware of.

Characteristic #4 - A Diaphragm - When it comes to characteristics of mammals, you'll find that mammals all have a diaphragm as well. This is a very thin muscle that actually separates off the lower abdomen and the upper abdomen from each other.

Characteristic #5 - Unique Heart - Last of all, you'll find that mammals have a very unique heart as well. They are the only animals that have one big artery that leaves the heart by going to the left. Most animals have one main artery going in another direction or they have a variety of different arteries that are leaving the heart.

I came into this thread looking to find a 2-century-old woman from Wisconsin who carves meat for a living.

    I was sorely disappointed.

Mammals display a remarkable array of adaptations that enable them to inhabit a wide range of habitats. Some of their characteristics are shared by no other groups of animals: hair, mammary glands, three specialized middle-ear bones.

This isn't the only source where I've read this. I've seen this from multiple other sources too. Oh well, I fucked this up.

Interesting fact: Two of our middle-ear bones were used by our ancestors to chew

The about article says that those are some of the characteristics, not all of them

In fact, both articles leave out the word 'all'

Yeah I was just about to add that before you said this. Okay, I didn't realize that both our single jaw bone is the result of the other reptilian jaw bones becoming the mammals' middle ear bones.

And I think that many other mammal species' dicks actually have bones in them. Boners with real bones. There's a concept.
