Default Armchair Intellectuals is greatly needed

The one section that is greatly needed here is the return of AI. That was the forum that first drew me to LWS back in oh fo, and I think it would benefit CD as well.

It offers a place where people can go and talk about relevant issues without constant moronic answers from the masses

    and

It keeps CD from becoming the outlet for the digital diarrhea of the condescending douchebags who should be posting in AI in the first place.

    It's win-win.

Yeah I agree. I always wondered since CD opened up why that subforum was never implemented.

One of the reasons we don't have an AI is because this sentence is a giant lie. All AI would do is attract more condescending douchebags who would post in other forums too, much to the great annoyance of everyone else.

The way things are is fine. When intelligent discussion is desired it is typically had. Every once and a while there is a retarded post in there, but if you aren't mature enough to ignore it and/or smart enough to mercilessly ravage it then you wouldn't be smart and/or mature enough to be in an AI forum anyway. (this isn't aimed at anyone in particular, it is just a blanket statement)

I disagree because if someone wanted to go talk about the geo-political consequence of North Korea developing a nuclear program or something similar, there would be a forum for that where people would be looking to actively participate in discussion. At the same time, that same person could also go to a different forum and say something like "girls are fags", comment on how gay rick scarf is or about how Padme is waaaay hotter than Leia etc.

It would more than likely increase traffic and cohesiveness of the site as a whole.

I'm getting kind of tired of hearing this. It's not as if every poster in AI was a condescending douchebag and the rest of the forum consisted of awesome intelligent people like you who just didn't feel the need to show off how brilliant they were. Things like this are only ever said because other people say them.

The fact is that AI in its day attracted some goddamn fine posters to the site. Some really sincere, thoughtful, clever, insightful, genuine people. Some of them have come here, but most of them didn't, which is a shame. But we do have posters that would make for excellent discussion in an AI; the reason we haven't implemented one is that we don't want to suck all the "intelligent debate" out of other forums and we also have our doubts about the sustainability of activity with such a small group of posters as we have.

I can relate to seeing a need for AI. It would be nice, in ideal circumstances. I know coqauvin and I have had a few debates over MSN that we simply couldn't have anywhere on the site, same with benszs and same with exodite pr syme. But we're not refraining from it so that people like you, Mr E, can feel superior to all those douchebag AI posters.

The assumption that AI was full of douchebags was held by flames posters who were by default douchebags but still didn't post there.

Well, ColdFyre didn't post in here, so I assume you mean me.

I understand what you mean that there is potentially too small of a userbase to warrant a subforum like AI, and thats a shame. I see it as a place for topics that would generally receive no response in the more mainstream subforums, but I can also see why you wouldn't want to take out those that do exist. Perhaps in the future...

i think repping should be disabled for AI, just to keep the atmosphere of the subforum. It'd be better then having anyone who proposed their view neggarepped by someone who disagreed.

    Ouch, kitty has claws.

I said what I said because we had a vote once and that seemed to be the consensus, as well as the issue of moderation. I wasn't implying I was necessarily superior to douchebag AI posters, I was implying that I did not like them. You and Prime and Coq and the like are not the ones I was referring too and you should know that silly. I was referring to the Mr. Dies and the people who get in there and start talking about things they don't understand and then start posting all around the site like they are better than everyone else.

Good -- they deserved a bit of a hurt.

Mr Die was not representative of the population of AI. You might know that if you ever stuck your head in on what you're criticising instead of just aiming condescending vitriol at it from up high in your ivory tower. The posters who posted the mostest in AI were, in no order:

    Me
    Prime
    Ollie Cromwell
    Benzzszsz
Ronares (who I believe is Gismo here?)
    Nine Castles
    sole (sometimes)

and a bunch of people I have forgotten because they were neither remarkably great or remarkably bad. People who got in there and started talking about things they didn't understand were very quickly smacked down (mostly by Exodite, hehe). People who posted like jerks were warned numerous times and forumbanned and mostly learnt their lesson... and if they didn't, we ignored them.

Posting in AI was, for the overwhelming most part, either good, great, or mediocre, and I never saw any evidence that it attracted douchebag losers who infested the rest of the site with obnoxiousness.

I did poke my head in from time to time, and most of the posters I didn't like (apart from the obvious flames dumbasses) did most of their posting there. I generally only got involved in discussion on topics I'm passionate about, which is like 3 things. It might not be fair to say that it spawns obnoxious posters, but I can only speak from my own perspective. I do not believe my opinion is wholly invalid.

    this is a terrible idea

mostly because people will not negarep you because they disagree with your opinion. people will negarep you because you consistently post badly thought out arguments and get angry when holes are pointed out. people will negarep you because you use poor means to support your arguments and get angry when they point this out to you.

people will negarep you for being a douchebag and being retarded. nobody negareps because they disagree with your opinion

there once was a togs who would post
on a forum board, gayer than most
    with quirk and some wit
    'quick reply' he'd hit
and suck a huge dick all night long because he is a giant faggot and i'm certain he is a catcher but to find out for certain i'd have to ask sycld, but i always thought it would be awkward, not to mention a little rude, to casually ask people about their sex lives, especially out of the blue, but you know i could be entirely wrong about this, but then again there is only one way to find out and that way is togs for fuck's sake check your world music thread i spent an hour replying in there but it's ok i didn't mind because i ended up enjoying all the old tunes i found thanks buddy ps you're a homo

Of course I want to see AI come back, but I agree with gwahir that at this point, CD may not have enough of a userbase to support a subforum like that. It couldn't hurt to try, though. I'd be in favor of opening up an experimental AI subforum right now (or soon). We could always close it down if it didn't get enough activity.

In my view, the value of an AI subforum is not necessarily that it keeps the "serious, intelligent" posting separated from the "moronic" posting of the "masses", but that it gathers all the serious-issue threads in one place for those who are inclined to read and post in them. In my view, that's better than having them scattered through CI.

Let's hope AI isn't filled with "DOES MORALITY EXIST" and other metaphysical bullshit.

It'd be nice if there was more of me. People citing their arguments would be nice for a change.

Example of my manly debating skills when up against a brutal enemy; myself:
Hey there x, you're wrong about Socialism in One Country being 'Stalinist.' First off, the first discussion within the Marxist movement on the subject can be attributed to Georg von Vollmar's 1878 book The Isolated Socialist State. Furthermore, your claims that Lenin rejected Socialism in One Country are baseless, as these glorious quotes will show:

"A United States of the World (not of Europe alone) is the state form of the unification and freedom of nations which we associate with socialism—about the total disappearance of the state, including the democratic. As a separate slogan, however, the slogan of a United States of the World would hardly be a correct one, first, because it merges with socialism; second, because it may be wrongly interpreted to mean that the victory of socialism in a single country is impossible, and it may also create misconceptions as to the relations of such a country to the others." (Lenin, V.I. On the Slogan for a United States of Europe. Lenin Collected Works, Progress Publishers, Moscow, Volume 21, pages 339-343. Sotsial-Demokrat No. 44, August 23, 1915, 1974.)

‘The development of capitalism proceeds extremely unevenly in the various countries. It cannot be otherwise under the commodity production system. From this, it follows irrefutably that Socialism cannot achieve victory simultaneously in all countries. It will achieve victory first in one or several countries, while the others will remain bourgeois or pre-bourgeois for some time’. (V. I. Lenin: C. W. Russ. Ed. Vol. 19; p.325).

Oh what's that? You say that Lenin was referencing the ultimate internationalism of the revolution whereas Stalin advocated socialism basically staying in the USSR? DAYUM SON, YOU FUCKED UP.

"But the overthrow of the power of the bourgeoisie and establishment of the power of the proletariat in one country does not yet mean that the complete victory of socialism has been ensured. After consolidating its power and leading the peasantry in its wake the proletariat of the victorious country can and must build a socialist society. But does this mean that it will thereby achieve the complete and final victory of socialism, i.e., does it mean that with the forces of only one country it can finally consolidate socialism and fully guarantee that country against intervention and, consequently, also against restoration? No, it does not. For this the victory of the revolution in at least several countries is needed. Therefore, the development and support of revolution in other countries is an essential task of the victorious revolution. Therefore, the revolution which has been victorious in one country must regard itself not as a self-sufficient entity, but as an aid, as a means for hastening the victory of the proletariat in other countries. Lenin expressed this thought succinctly when he said that the task of the victorious revolution is to do "the utmost possible in one country for the development, support and awakening of the revolution in all countries." (Stalin, Vol. XXIII: The Foundations of Leninism, p. 385)

It's your personal skills most people take issue with, not your debating skills.

For instance: don't try to demonstrate to us your mad skillz. It's obnoxious and unimpressive.

Coming from someone who just called me a master debator I'd think the smiley and the "up against myself" comment would have tipped you off that it was more than halfway in jest.
