    Default Stole a mower...

Okay I didn't really steal it, but might as well have. I've been looking at Sears Craftsman yard mowers for the past week or so and found a few on clearance that weren't too bad. There were a few YT3000 (98921) tractors between $1160 and $1360, regular price being $1659, along with a compare of last years models. I procured a 2008 catalog to compare them and found the YS4500 (98822) to be nearly the same as the YT3000, lacking one horsepower but adding a hydrostatic transmission. The DLS3500 fell under the "Lawn Tractor" category, being a bit more light duty and having a steel front axle. The YT3000 (98922, same as the 98921 but with hydrostatic tranny)was on sale for $1299, $550 off the regular price, creating a tempting alternative to the discontinued or refurbished tractors.

Long story short, the '08 YS4500 was $1202 a few days ago, originally $1859. This morning it was down to $1081. I asked for the store manager and got it for an even $900, ending up paying less than $1000 for it with tax (still getting used to this damned 9% sales tax) and a manual edger. There's a four-stroke Weedwhacker and a nice power washer on clearance over there as well that are tempting to negotiate for, but I'll probably just wait for now.

That self-propelled mower I bought a few months ago just got too tedious. Kinda sucks I bought one of the higher end models as I was planning to hold off on a rider, but at least it should last a while. With hurricane season officially upon us a generator is next on the list, followed by a power washer, air compressor, and tiller (either standalone or mower attachment). I'm thinking a garden is in the plans for next spring.

Time to grab a beer and test out the mower.

It's too quick. I was hoping for a relaxing mow with that would take at least three beers. I barely finished one. What takes three hours with the push mower takes 30 minutes with this. Then again I was hotrodding it, except for the uneven spots where the moving van sank in the front yard. The neighbor offered to bring his tractor and disc over to smooth it out but it's too late in the year right now. Maybe later this summer I'll invest in the canopy, take it slower, and try to live up to your expectations and make the news like this guy just did: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...06-05-20-30-16

Why do people need sitting mowers unless you have an ungodly sized yard?

I thought the same a few months ago. Trust me, an acre gets big cutting less than 20 inches at a time in the summer. Besides, this mower can be used for other things as well, especially if I decide to go the garden route next year.

i thought it was going to be a thread by one of the residential potheads.

instead it was about one of the conservatives who is a soldier and a gunnut but otherwise a boringly sane and stable person buying a reasonably priced lawn care device.

Eh the 4 stroke weed whackers are usually heavier than the 2 stroke and more expensive. Sure they may be a little better but if you use quality oil in the 2 stroke and buy a good one it will last a long time. Pressure washers are like magic machines when you see the grime come off something but be careful you can screw stuff up with one.

My neighbor put it best: time is money. Despite my overly optimistic post from a few months ago, the grass grows quite fast during spring and summer. It needs cutting at least once a week. The temperature is up to 95 degrees here already, and spending three-plus hours cutting grass in the heat when I could spend less than an hour makes sense to me. If I were single and had no other plans for the yard, the self-propelled would be fine. As it is, 3-6 hours a week cutting grass is time spent away from the family or accomplishing other things around the house, such as that garden.

As for exercise, I was thinking yesterday of buying a couple 4x4's and a length of steel pipe to set a pullup bar outside. Also, if I can find a good sturdy branch, I might throw up a rope as well. Miss those days of climbing ropes at Campbell. I've got a good 2-mile run route (just need to get motivated more often and scout out a five mile), and have been planning to get a bike helmet. Might as well practice safety. As for getting exercise while working, my axe and manual edger see a bit of use. When I get some firewood for winter I'll split it manually, and growing and maintaining a garden will probably be harder work than I'm thinking.

Oh, I see. I may be weird, but I've always viewed lawn work as a leisurely activity. I love pushing my mower around for a few hours (it has already hit mid-90s here too). Then again, I don't have a family to worry about, and while there are definitely better uses of my time, there always are.

One time when I was a kid I was driving my neighbor's lawnmower around the neighborhood. Turns out some bitch called the cops on me, because I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop who said they had received several calls reporting me "driving around and inciting panic"
