Things certainly aren't horrible. If we take a step back and try to take in the big picture and weigh-out the benefits and detriments humanity has right now, on which side would the balance fall?

I don't think it's ever really been a debate. The world--in a more strict sense, "humanity"--has never really been in good shape. Because there has always been conflict.

Things are only bad now if you are comparing them to historical precedent. Worse implies a devolution, a degradation of state.

But look at the medical and technological advances we've made, how progressive we've become in terms of social thought. That certainly counts for something.

Could the world be in worse shape? The question is too broad. In respect to me, I'll probably consider the world in a better place more than, say, a family in Tehran or Pakistani widow as a result of pesticide testing.
this post was WAY too intelligent for this thread.

You know how medicine has saved so many lives? Without that medicine then those genes wouldn't have been passed down and the gene pool would be a lot better off(I'm talking about genetic diseases)

oh hai guiz the last 100 years of modern medicine is the only reason why we have genetic diseases that have been with humanity for hundreds of thousands of years

It's all relative to your personal definitions of the words "worse" and "shape".

Regardless of anything said in this thread, Gorefinger is a huge faggot.

well i mean the world has never been in better shape - sure we have massive problems compared to historically but this is strictly correlative to our successes - and hey they're less personally afflictive now than they were at any time in the past, and it's possible to change them; preachers of armaggedon have been around for decades and they're always inherently sensationalists. whether humanity is in any better shape is a totally different question, because i find that the better off people are the more their brain's sadistic side finds to piss them off with; subjectivity rocks.

oh hai gice I'm not saying it'd completely cure it.

But think about it, if my diabetic child were to just die rather than be constantly treated, then his genes would have a 0% possibility of passing those genes down. Sure someone may be carrying that gene and not expressing it, but if you are expressing the gene you have a pretty high rate of passing that down

Diabetes was a poor example for you to choose seeing as I could develop it without the genetic history for it.

We get it, you're talking about genetic evolution. What we're saying is that it's been done before. You're not breaking new ground here Copernicus. We've also cured things like Polio, to the point where it's not even considered an issue anymore.

Say you break both of your legs, by definition no one should help you, pick you up or take you to the hospital. Ideally you should be left there to die because a) you were stupid enough to break both your legs, b) you lacked sufficient enough calcium to have the strength to endure the shock to your legs.

You're expanding not only into simple Darwinism, but social Darwinism.

As much as you would like to play devil's advocate it simply is not a concept that's going to be applied in reality. Ever. So you can stop.

Don't forget that things like cancer are genetic mutations that, again, can occur without genetic histories.
