At least its optimistic, which is a lot more than I can say for sycld's broken record response of "omg i'm going to fail grad school because i'm such a failure"

Well, personally, I think it's an admirable aspiration. I just found the way he worded it quite funny.

tbh the most that we can hope for is to knock up some woman (or be knocked up), make some children, and, hope against hope, stay with that person raising your children while supporting your family through a soul-numbing job while enjoying recreation when it can be had. if you split up, hopefully you can stiill see your kids and find another spouse to keep you company.

what's worse is that most people in the world are not that lucky.

oh i forgot to add the end of my little everyman's narrative

you'll also spend most of your life slowly losing your physical and mental capacity until you are old, wrinkled, and decrepit. but don't think you can ever stop working because "retirement" will have been a thing of the past. after your body and mind are so completely useless that you cannot work any longer, maybe one of your children will take you in, though eventually they will not be able to put up with you.

you'll end your days in a stinking nursing home completely helpless and dependant on apathetic, underpaid nurses alone, terrified, wracked with depression and physical pain, and hardly aware of what is going on. oh and did i forget to mention that your posessions will be slowly sold off and your assests liquidated to pay for your "care" until you have nothing left, at which point you mercifully become a "ward of the state"? no matter, though: it's not like you were even aware of them anymore anyway.

there's nothing arrogant about believing you can devote yourself to something and make a difference where others haven't -- naive, maybe, but not arrogant (unless you're saying you can do it because you're so much smarter and better than those who have come before)

it was just the way that cock in wine was expressing his future goals. it almost sounded to me at least as though he were expecting to change everything singlehandedly or at least to completely eliminate the problems in his lifetime.

well it hardly matters since no matter what you do life is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short even in civilization.

Okay, we've derailed this thread enough.

I plan to finish my degree, hopefully to a decent standard. Meanwhile I'm going to continue doing stand up with the intent of writing some sort of one-man story-show to put on as part of one of the modules in my third year. The idea is that it will be something I can refine over the year after that and eventually take to the Edinburgh festival.

Due to Salford's fantastic connections with the BBC and the upcoming media city development I'm pretty much guaranteed a half-decent job within one of the creative industries there, provided I make the right impressions on the right people. Doing stand-up also provides a few ins to decent writing jobs so I'm not too worried about career prospects.

I don't aspire to become a huge-name theatre-packing comic with shitty television appearances and bad book-deals etc. Just someone with integrity and a reasonable amount of respect among my peers but I'm halfway towards that any way.

Then I'll probably end up with a kid in my mid-thirties and I'll be forced to sell out at the height of my artistic powers.

Have fun waiting tables when you're in your 40s.

Seriously, move to New York or London. There's far too much competition for anyone 'new' in LA whereas you start to make it on a lower field and you can open doors for yourself.

yeah upon reflection i do sound like an arrogant fuck, but mostly if you're looking for it/expecting it which, to be honest, I can't really fault yoo for.

sycld no wonder you are so miserable you do know there are good and fun things to do in life, right?

basically you can look at the situation this way

frame 1: man it totally sucks that I'm living because i'm going to die one day fuck everything also i'm brown and homosexual the only thing that hates me more than the world is myself

frame 2: man living totally rules! apparently there's a time limit, which kinds of sucks, but i'll make up for it as much as I can, because i'm brown (lots of browno people are fun!) and homosexual, and the only thing that loves homos more than other homos is straight women!

ok so overbearing optimism is annoying as shit, but hating the routine you feel your being forced to live is terrible so long as you're aware it's shitty and still aren't even trying to change it into something you would enjoy, in which case, i have no pity for you.
