    Arrow Life in America

I have a question for America. Is the economy as bad as the news makes it out to be?

You see, since June 2006 I've been living in japan. Working as a bartender, and getting a plan to stay here for a 5 or so more years and save up money. Now to make a long story short, Japan as slowly been breaking my will. For a while now the only thing that has kept me over here is the belief that its better then the American economy, but im at my snapping point right now.
I have a wife over here that would need to apply for a green card (6-8 months outside America, 18 months inside US)

I used to dream of a life outside of America. Now all I do is dream of a life in America. Dreaming of the simple life that is northern california. Dreaming of a life of smoking dank, and fast cars, that's my baseball and apple pie. Dreaming of a place where I understand the laws, people, customs, city, language, and every thing else that makes up daily life...... that you dont notice until your mind goes into a complete meltdown of living somewhere else.

TLDR: Amruica, got jobs? got work? Got life? Tell me where to go!

There are countries other than America where you can probably do most of the things you want to.

nah you can do whatever you want in the US... as long as you're upper-middle class like me or upper class.

also, life in america is made much easier if you are completely immune to cancer and other debilitating diseases, as adequate medical treatment is becoming increasingly reserved for the rich or those that are poor/old enough to be on medicaid/medicare.

Okay really none of you guys are really getting on topic.. Is the economy as bad as the news says it is?

And yes how I got here was from jumping from country to country. Im going gonna start another journey right now. And its not from culture shock that I want to more, I think after 3 years that shock would have already passed.

i mean sure you can go sample countries to live in, but you're fucking dumb if you do that

go traveling with the intent to take in culture, not the intent to move somewhere. if you find a place you enjoy enough to move to, thats coo

i don't know. i'd joined the military at the right time for the wrong reasons, but if you move to america and looking to commit here for four years then find a government job. work in dc as a bartender and a pimp for the politically elite.

If you want to know if the economy is as bad as the news says it is then YES it is

But only if you're poor as fuck

If you are a normal, average human being you will only be affected if you have invested all your shit in shit

If you have a job that pays normaly and you refuse to buy caviar for EVERY MEAL you can live wherever the hell you want

I think if one actually wants to take in the culture of a country they should live there. Even the most well meaning traveller can't actually claim to know the culture of a country without spending a reasonable amount of time there. People who take a year out and go travelling are kidding themselfs if they think they're really bringing anything more profound than a degree of life experience and some funny stories back.

Also sailor jack, its more of a big deal to move somewhere especially with green card issues and all than it is to simply live and work somewhere. The economy might play a bigger part.

Really the only thing with a green card is making sure you do it right

If you do, there shouldnt really be a problem working

And if there is a problem you can sue somebody for shit loads and then youd be fine

I don't need a green card my wife would need one. And if you haven't lived in a different country then dont talk about sampling countries

i think the speed at which one takes in another countries culture is largely dependant on your social skills and your enthusiam, aka it's not an exact science and everybody is different

that being said, i feel as though if you're about average, you can get a general idea as to what the culture is like in a country if you actively try to learn about it in about a month or two. now this doesn't mean you're a damned native, but you should be able to grasp basics and realize if you want to learn more about said country after that length of time assuming you were paying attention at all imo.

edit: nice elitist comment capnfaggot that was enjoyable (i've lived in more countries than you--your experience in japan does not make you an expert at this)

Okay, excuse me faesce if I'm trying to keep this thread from getting derailed which you seem to be god set on doing. I don't know if you have lived in more countries then me, and you don't know if I have lived in more then you. Cause well I don't know, and I don't care, I'm not trying to make this a thread of how many countries have you been to (make one yourself if you want).

And for what its worth my experience here in japan does make me an expert but an expert of japan. I've seen life from the very bottom to millionaires. I've seen life and I want out... In a city of 34 million I can go to any part of it and get spotted by somebody I know. Living here has made me bitter and jaded about life.

But this thread is not for this conversation, If you wanna continue it then please send a PM.. Cause this thread was not made for this type of debate.

yes but a month or two is really just a quick glance at the culture there. I've found that 3 months in a place is the point where i really start making connections to the community that i'm in, but even after living somewhere for a year i still feel like a newcomer

yeah, but your point was that someone who really focused would pick it up in a month or so, and i disagree. I think to really immerse yourself in a culture, it takes a lot longer than that. it's all the little idiosyncracies of the culture that don't come out except situationally because no one really remembers a million little details.

that being said, you could can pantomime belonging and act like you fit right in easily enough with a couple months of practice, but that doesn't replace actually belonging and making lasting connections with the people there. Most of the places I've lived in for 3 or so months, I don't really talk to anyone from there anymore, with a couple exceptions. I suppose that's the way of the world, though

I recently moved to Dallas,Tx & it doesn't seem half as bad here as in other places in the U.S. I was here 2 weeks and landed a sweet little job in a publishing company.

i'm simply saying you can get a general idea of what the culture is like and if you would enjoy learning more about it in <1 month without going balls to the wall unless you're retarded

So what you're saying is that mental retardation will allow you to get a general idea of what a culture is like faster than if you weren't retarded? Interesting theory, Imma subscrbin 2 your newsletter, etc.
