Default I am going to witness Antoine Dufour playing tonight

I honestly chubbed up a little bit when I saw he was playing in Whitby tonight. I leave in approximately 25 minutes. Here is a [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNw9YaXemlM"]YouTube - Antoine Dufour - Spiritual Groove - Guitar -www.candyrat.com[/ame] to a sample of this virtuoso in action. I will endeavour to get him to sign my 12 string tonight, and will report any success I have into luring him into my bed.

that guy is fucking incredible at the guitar! I am seeing him again in October with Don Ross, which is, again, going to be an amazing show. Every time I watch this guy play live, it's just so goddamn inspiring that I want to play more and more and more.

    Well that was shit.

I mean christ at least Yingwie Malmsdouchebag is sort of fun to watch. This is both boring music and a boring performance.

I just don't like musicians who's music solely exists to say "LOOK I'M BETTER THAN YOU WITH THIS PIECE OF WOOD BETWIXT MY LEGS".

Although, to be fair, Yngwie Malmsteen is worse for that. Particularly if you notice the freudian way he positions his guitar.

but this isn't that kind of music. It's really not - the original of the piece i have up there is with a violin playing some pretty incredible lead over the guitar, which is just a supporting instrument. Even if you listen to the setup of the song (i recently learned it, but I can't play it half as well), it's incredibly simple. I mean look at 1:27-1:55 - it's literally three chords. the song only has 5 different parts to it, and each part is relatively simple, except the bridge which is still simple in construction, but requiring incredible finesse and technique to play.

Yes but it's still rather show-offy and over-complicated with the music doing virtually nothing with itself. Obviously I can't speak for the original recording but that video feels like nothing more than not unpleasant background noise.

    really?

ok what is the borderline of complicated for you, because this shit sounds complicated and nobody seems to believe me when Ii say it isn't. I understand that you want to look too cool for school in this, but you're arguing on the wrong grounds instead of just saying you have different tastes.

No, I understand that it is uncomplicated in its composition (I'm a guitarist too remember). The primary techniques used are unnecessarily complicated for such an unimpressive result. It just feels like every 17 year old guitarist I hung out with in college who had learned to tap and shred quite well so all of a sudden they employ it as much as possible in every song they can, not realising that it in fact detracts from the music itself. This is similar, the effects used don't make the chord progressions or the melodies and harmonies sound any better because they are boring and uninspired chord progressions and melodies and harmonies.

I know I'm not explaining myself as clearly as I possibly could but my concentration isn't with me right now. I'm just trying to let you know that I dislike it for real informed reasons and not the arbitrary reasons douchebags give over the internet. But whatever trevor, different strokes for different folks.

I didn't find that music inspirational at all, and I think the kid plays guitar like a sissy.

what tapping and shredding don't detract from music itself what are you, daft? i'm going to throw this out there - you're not much of a guitarist, and the reasons you give certainly aren't informed. It's the general consensus of people who look only for showmanship over music and denounce it wherever they get a whiff of it. There is showmanship, you can't play this genre of music without showing off a little, and using these ridiculous (yes, i am totally aware of how ridiculous they are) techniques is really just part of the repetoire. What you're saying is you don't like the tools they are using to build these songs because you feel it's too complicated and showy and they should stick to what everyone else is already doing/has done before? I'm sorry, that is what's truly uninspired in my eyes.

Also, going to throw this out there - you can't denounce this guy's music until you listen to more than one song

I can denounce that song having only listened to that song.

Yeah yeah, I still see the pretentious points you're making but well I'll put it like this. This kind of music is only ever really liked by people who want to be able to show off and play like that. I'm not much of a guitarist really but I'm a damn good bassist and, when I was 17, I learnt how to do all the fancy fret-tapping shizz that made me look fucking cool. I listened to victor wooten and stu hamm and practiced a lot to be able to do the kind of stuff they do. Despite all my tutors explicitly telling me it doesn't help the actual song, it took me about 2 years to realise that music is about what is conveyed through the notes, textures, timbres, tones etc. and not about what kind of ridiculous techniques you can do to make other players feel jealous. That's practically all this music does.

    that's a fair point

i won't lie, I want to be able to play with that level of precision and finesse. There's something really appealing about seeing something that is difficult performed well, and it's something I would like to do. I realize this gives me a powerful bias in favour of the music, but I don't do it simply because of the techniques. If I didn't feel something from this kind of music, I couldn't play it - there is something intensely beautiful about some of the songs this guy and others in the same genre do that is incredibly pleasing to my ear. Ebon Coast, by Andy McKee, is a pretty incredible song that still employs a lot of harmonics and tapping without losing a powerful emotional impact. Elevation Music by Don Ross is another that is quite beautiful.

I think the issue here is that you see this music as a vehicle for a musician to whip out their penis of technique and have the world marvel at it's size without any homage made to the music itself, and I see it as that they are making good music (albeit with a low ratio, but this is true of many good artists), and that the techniques are tools they are using not to show off, but because they love the sound of them. They (in my eyes, kind of too much) employ harmonics to a great degree, but I don't blame them for that because I love the sound of harmonics, and I love when artists can effectively employ them.

In my eyes, good music and making it is more about 'Hey, this sounds really cool, let's run with it' or a 'I have something I want to say, and i will craft the progression to my words for emotional impact.' One isn't any better or worse than the other. Also, I love virtuosity.
