    Default Chronicle [2012]

I just watched this movie today and I was pleasantly surprised.

The film is about three teenagers who develop superpowers and how those powers affect each person. It's shot documentary style but don't worry, it's not a lot of shaky cam.

I thought the characters were very believable. I also thought the plot was realistic too (besides the whole gaining super powers part).

I've seen for trailers for it, and I thought it was mildly interesting. I don't know if I'd run out to see it in a theater, but I'll probably catch it once it's out on video.

Yeah I was a little iffy on seeing the movie but I really enjoyed it.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention the great special effects.

I saw Chronicle yesterday and really enjoyed the film. I liked the documentary perspective because I think it was just a [clever] way for them to break the fourth wall and give us engaging insights to the characters. I don't think the characters would have been as interesting if the film wasn't done like this.

    What is this, 1997?

I thought the trailers looked abysmal (as trailers usually do) but what I've read about the film makes it see, at least mildly interesting. I won't go and see it, though. There are other things I'd rather see first and I don't go to the old picture house all that often.

I don't think documentary style filming automatically qualifies as breaking the 4th wall. The characters weren't addressing the audience, they were addressing each other and themselves. "Breaking the 4th wall" entails characters acknowledging their own fictionality. (I wrote an English paper over breaking the 4th wall in high school, therefore I am an expert in this topic)

I think you're right. Maybe the correct term is aside.

not quite -- it only means acknowledging their audience. you can break the fourth wall in a documentary (and most do, obviously).

they could break the fourth wall by talking about "whoever's going to see this video when it gets out" without acknowledging their own fictionality.
