Default Awake - Series and Episode Discussion [Spoilers]

Awake is a show about a man caught between two seemingly believable streams of consciousness. After a horrific car accident with his family Detective Britten wakes up to one reality in which his wife survived the crash but his son died. Upon falling asleep, he wakes up to the other reality where his son is alive but his wife was the one who has perished.

Small changes between the realities seep into his work-life too.

Now he is on a journey to preserve the realities of the two lives he now lives while maintaining his sanity.

    This is Awake.

Hulu has the Pilot before it's initial airing on NBC.

I just finished watching the Pilot. I like the filming style and how it was edited. This episode could have been potentially confusing in spots but the use of orange and blue tones really helps distinguish the different realities. If I had to choose which reality I thought was a dream it'd have to be the one where the wife died since there's no way that therapist could have printed off four pages in under a second. Joking aside, I thought the episode was interesting but it seemed to lack a real hook at the end. Yeah I wanna know which reality (if either) is real but that's not gonna be revealed anytime soon. What is there that makes me want to watch the next episode? Neither police case was particularly exciting. Some of the scenes with the wife and son were touching but not good enough to carry the show. I thought the therapist scenes were the most interesting but I can't imagine watching episode after episode of both therapists telling Detective Britten that their's is the real reality.

My interest is piqued enough to watch a few more episodes but they gotta get better than this one if I'm gonna keep watching.

I am hesitant as well. I built this up in my head, and perhaps a bit too much. I felt like I was spoon fed ideas and feelings that I should have otherwise come to on my own.

The show runners have stated that they believe to fully flesh out their vision would require 7-8 seasons. Something I simply can't fathom for a show premise like this, and that's a large time-investment.

Ok shit got much more interesting in episode 2. I still need to watch episode 3 but at this point I'm hooked on the show. The conclusion of episode 2 had that hook that was missing from the first episode.

So far I'm loving it. I was very skeptical about, yet intrigued by, the premise, and I've enjoyed everything I've seen so far. I think my favorite part about it is that so far nothing has seemed far-fetched. Everything that each psychologist has said makes sense, and I catch myself nodding along whenever they offer rationales or attempt proofs. So far I'd have to say it is quite neat, and I hope it doesn't get cancelled.

Oh, and the serial killer I found to be particularly interesting. I feel like the conversation he had with the killer at the end sort of pointed to a third possibility that neither of the worlds is real and he's just insane. I'll be interested to see if gemini shows up in the other reality.

Do you remember which reality the guy's boss hints that there was something more to the car crash, like something sinister?

I think that was the red reality.

Fuck, that last episode, "That's Not My Penguin" had some seriously creepy parts. The music they used in this episode was perfect, especially the music that was played when they showed the penguin. I'm really getting into the series. My guess is that both the wife and the son are dead and it's some conspiracy to keep Detective Britton believing that both are alive. Or perhaps the opposite, they're both alive and someone wants him to think they're both dead.

Anyway the preview for the next episode looks really good.

I'm catching up, albeit slowly. I'll update when I can.

Even with the color shades between the realities I am finding myself confused with what happens where.

During the episode I have no problem but after a couple of days some of the details get confusing. I can see how it could be confusing during the episode but I take extra care to notice what shade a scene is while I'm watching.

Well looks like the writers got a proper warning that the show was being cancelled because I thought the finale was well done and wrapped up everything in a satisfactory way (even though it obviously didn't end it as originally planned). I thought this was the strongest episode. Unlike many premature finales, it didn't feel rushed to give a conclusion.

I wonder if this was how the season was originally supposed to end, because the conclusion could be interpreted in other ways besides the obvious.
