Talking The Avengers [may contain spoilers]

I saw a midnight screening of the movie last night. I was one of the first 5 people in line so I got a double sided theater poster (worth about $40). I also got some dinky small Avengers poster too for buying some popcorn deal.

Ok anyway, the movie was way better than I could have imagined. I've been hearing that the Avengers is as good as or even better than the Dark Knight and what I heard was right. It's kinda hard to compare the two movies because the tone is so different, so I won't say the Avengers is better, but as far as comic book movies, it's at the top with the Dark Knight. Actually, as far as any type of action movie, it's at the top.

One thing that surprised me about the movie was the well placed comic relief that was actually funnier than a lot of comedy movies (but make no mistake, this wasn't a comedy). My favorite was the guy playing Space Invaders (which I just now realized how clever that really is considering the villains in this movie). By the way if you're wondering who the aliens are they're the Chitauri which are basically the Ultimate Universe's version of the Skrulls. It's been rumored that the Skrulls are tied up Fox's Fantastic Four license, so this is probably Marvel Studio's clever way to get around that.

Like every other Marvel Studio film, this one has a bonus scene hinting to the next movie (as well as another bonus scene at the very end of the credits). The bonus scene reveals the main villain for the next movie and damn it's a fucking good one. I accidentally yelled "oh my god" when I saw his face. I could tell who the real comic book nerds were after that because it's a big villain in the Marvel universe but most non readers have no clue who he is.

    For those curious:

Overall a decent movie. Not sure what I was expecting from it, but I agree that it's in the same league as a batman movie even though I'm not the world's biggest fan of those. Characterization was amazing (big props go to Scarlett Johansson for exceeding my low expectations). The only character I hated was Hawkeye, but I guess that is also true to the comics. The plot was what it was - I didn't go in expecting a shakespearean tale of intrigue and tragedy. I'm also glad Joss Whedon didn't go overboard with goofiness, as he is often wont to do.

hahah yeah but the hulk's final transformation and the reveal of his "secret" were totally excellent and worth the price of space turtles.

my favourite joke, and also my favourite character moment:

    "monkeys? i don't understand--"
"I DO. [beat] i understood that reference."

i didn't think it was a perfect movie, but there was really nothing WRONG with it. it didn't have the weird tone and melodrama and stupid characters of thor (and loki wasn't a whinging emo), or the "laying out the pieces" feeling of captain america, or the feeling of staleness and wasted time of iron man 2.

the characters were well written and treated well, the action was exciting, and surprisingly well-shot by relative newbie joss, and it didn't try too hard and wasn't unutterably stupid and ham-fisted in handling its politics/message/themes/etc. i thought the plotting was a little round at the edges, and i thought the stakes of the final battle weren't really high enough, but other than that it was well above par.

also, agreed about scarjo -- with my low expectations, she cleared the bar with room to spare.

    favourite parts:

    -both black widow interrogation scenes
-"i'm sorry, that was mean. i just wanted to see what you'd do."
-"phil? um, his first name is 'agent'."
-banner & stark hanging out doin' science
    -hawkeye vs black widow
-AC/DC overriding the PA system in the SHIELD plane as iron man arrives on the scene (perfection)
    -"better clench up, legolas."

also it was gratifying to see stark go back to the circular chest repulsor thing.

    honestly i can't BELIEVE i didn't see this coming

It's nowhere near the level of The Dark Knight. There are so many minor scenes drawn out for a few seconds longer than they should have, like civilian reactions and things blowing up, that add up to ruin the overall pace.

it did a lot of things better than the dark knight, i thought, and it didn't do a whole bunch of things that TDK did really well. but they're SUCH different films that i don't see the relevance of comparing the two. they're barely even the same genre.

I don't think the two movies compare, but they are both great. (DK is a little darker which is going to make it ridiculously hard to ever pair that with GL for a Justice League movie but we all know that won't happen)

It was so funny though. The Hulk moments mentioned above as well as Loki "This usually works" were just great.

let's be honest -- bale will NEVER be up for an ensemble movie with a JL. if it's going to happen, it'll be a rebooted batman.

apparently to begin with, RDJ to whedon was like "tony stark really needs to be the main player and drive this thing" but then they talked about it and both agreed it wouldn't work so RDJ dropped it.

Uh Nolan has stated clearly that there are no super powered beings nor will there ever be super powered beings in the nolanverse, so yeah what gwahir said is right, there won't be a justice league movie until this batman series is over.

Well I highly doubt that a rebooted batman will do very well. Which will also make it difficult to make a JLA movie so yeah I just am disappointed

the batman of a JLA movie needs to be a minor player with huge presence. he can't be the focus, or he'll be competing with nolan's batman. it can happen, it just needs a competent writer, a clever director and a strong vision.

Well we still need a Flash (I think it would be weird to do [though apparently they are?] in super speed as it would look uber lame... maybe slow mo would be better)..

Wonder Woman is not out until 2015 apparently, but good luck with that

Also I feel as though this will help with the downfall of DC comics and it makes me sad

I read this prediction of what's going to happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I really hope a lot of this plays out.

Look on the bright side, by 2015 there'll have been at least 3 more dc universe reboots so one of them might have characters that would be good for a movie

Honestly it's quite remarkable that The Avengers got made at all. Warner Brothers has the rights to almost the entire DC Catalog, while Marvel's catalog is spread out all over.

Marvel Studios has the rights to The Incredible Hulk (which they got back from Universal), Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America.
Columbia has Ghost Rider (They can keep it!) and Spider-Man.
20th Century Fox has X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil/Elektra, and Deadpool (which must fall under The X-Men).
New Line had the rights to Blade, I assume they still do.

It'd almost seem like a JLA would be a shoe-in after that clusterfuck. However Marvel was smart about one thing; they made their own production company with an eye on an Avengers film. DC just sold the rights off as single properties with no plans of ever trying to do a team-up type of film. I'm not sure how JLA would go over now that The Avengers is out as it'd be pretty obvious DC/Warner Bros. would be trying to cash in on the success of the Avengers.

I don't think Justice League would translate to a movie as well as the Avengers did. The JLA's main characters are (generally) more conflicted and dark than the Avengers'. There wouldn't be enough time to flesh it out properly in a reasonably amount of time. JLA may tell deeper stories, but the Avengers is more fun, and it is much easier to translate fun than it is to translate depth.

Plus the main villain would have to be Darkseid because of Superman making pretty much every other translatable villain a non-threat, and there is no way they are getting that right. (and by translatable I mean: Injustice League/Legion of Doom/Whatever would take to long to develop on its own to use that, Crisis stuff no way, etc...). The only other things that could work would be Tower of Babel (but only if everyone is established very well beforehand) or Prometheus (which is what I'd want to see, but he may be too obscure/unpopular).

DC characters seem pretty overpowered without huge character flaws. To me, they seem almost like caricatures of power where they don't really have human flaws but silly external flaws (like Superman's kryptonite or Martian Manhunter's fear of fire). I thought the Avengers worked because of the flaws or quirks in the characters that made them more human or accessible and it also gave light to their vulnerabilities (apart from Thor, he just seemed strong and immortal and could probably defend earth on his own, given enough time and battle tactics education).

thor could barely keep his own against the hulk, keep in mind.

i agree that a few DC characters are basically gods, but being overpowered shouldn't be a criticism in and of itself. as long as the character is compelling, what's the problem? and i'd argue that batman and superman (the latter only when done well) are two of the most compelling superheroes out there.

Yeah, DC characters are fairly ridiculous (also remember in the last superman movie when he lifted an entire continent made of kryptonite without any problems). Don't get me started on batman and his fanboys who worship him as an undefeatable god.

That's what I like about Marvel characters. Like you said Thor doesn't seem to have a lot of battle training, which is kind of true to characters with his or similar power sets in the comics. Thor definitely is high tier when it comes to power level, but he always needs help from his human friends to win the really tough battles. Wolverine can't fight for shit in the comics, because he knows he can get stabbed and shot all he wants. This makes him - an almost literally immortal character - a lot more human.

    :welp:

    http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-...203740882.html

If teaming up worked for Iron Man, Thor and The Hulk, it has to work for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, right?

Warner Bros. Pictures seems to think so, as Variety reported yesterday that the studio has hired a new writer to bring DC Comics' "Justice League" to the big screen. Just as "The Avengers" assembled the biggest heroes from Marvel Comics, "Justice League" would see DC's iconic characters joining forces to save the world. (DC Comics is a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.) The fact that "The Avengers" is now the third highest-grossing film of all time with $1.3 billion worldwide seems to have reignited the fire to get the other legendary superhero team up on movie screens.

I honestly don't believe it can be done well. The powers that the justice league have are not as movie friendly as the avengers. Marvel has the movies and dc has the games in my opinion.

If DC had thought about that years ago, back when Wonder Woman and The Flash were still in their writing phases and Batman's newest incarnation had only one film, then maybe they could've made it work. But I think it's too late, now.

I think it just comes down to some bigwigs seeing how much money Marvel Studios made and questioned why couldn't they cash in on that while conveniently ignoring how much time and work Marvel would've put into the creative direction of the previous Avenger related films.
