The Blues Brothers, if it doesn't put a smile on your face then there is something wrong with you.

Die Hard, this has to be one of the most influencial action movies ever made and still makes an excellent watch.

I know some have said it, but Saving Private Ryan, if for no other reason than the opening 30-60 minutes or however long the landing scenes are, I have yet to see anything that has captured the madness, insanity and horror of war like this film did.

LOTR. They really took CGI to the next level and showed that a fantasy film could be both a commercial and critical success, like it or not this was an important trilogy.

Dark Knight in my opinion is a pretty solid movie and should be on the list because, at least in my opinion it is an example of a superhero movie done really well, probably the best example.

I don't think that means it 'must be seen'.

Well, if you are a fan of a particular genre, or are interested in experiencing a particular genre, each will have its gems. Dark Knight is a gem in its genre, so that is a good reason to add it to the list. I mean you could say "it doesnt mean it must be seen" to all movies, no movie must be seen, you can get through life without ever seeing them. I think that is a poor way to look at it and if you think that way you should leave this thread, this is for people who like movies, giving strong reccomendations to movies they feel are essential to movie fans, at least that is my reading of it and I think that is a fair description.

Movies that epitomise their respective genres or basically serve to show other moviemakers "how it's done" are movies that might have a place on this list. Dark Knight, yes. Lord of the Rings, yes. Love, Actually, because it's a total chick flick that does not suck balls and is very watchable.

The Blues Brothers is a genre of its own. I'd call it a must watch, but only for certain people...

Hugh Grant ruins almost every movie he stars in. I thought the premise of the movie was ridiculously cheesy and on the whole unoriginal. I understand how one might enjoy the film but by no means would I consider Love, Actually a "must see movie".

I'd say its appeal is wide enough, and it does certain things well enough, for it to qualify.

I'd agree. I personally will never see this movie, however with a list like this you need to be broad in your range.

no with a list like this only great movies should be listed. If you want chick flicks there are plenty of better movies. I mean fuck, The Notebook anyone?

It's still a step up from Love, Actually. Seriously, Hugh Grant ruins every movie he stars in.

Put Hugh Grant aside and you have a movie that at least has some humour and the odd bit of warmth and some fantastic cast members.

The Notebook was just the most over dramatic, overacted, snooty, pompous 'chick flick' I have ever seen. I don't mind romance movies, in fact there's a lot of them which I love but this film was pathetic. The cast/crew should all be shot and buried in shallow graves.

Also, About A Boy was indeed hilarious (and Hugh Grant was surprisingly tolerable in it) but in all fairness it is based on a fantastic book (although compared to the book it's shit but that happens all the time...).
