I mean, I sided with mp when he said "I'm pretty sure when you introduce time travel, the shark has been jumped."

Then I thought, solely because it was a sci-fi show, that they were handling it decently well and that I could deal with it.

But now they are clearly out of ideas and the shark is just jumped. They are literally throwing characters and relationships at the viewers in a desperate to create new questions instead of dealing with the unanswered old ones (when the only question left at this point is: why haven't they answered the old questions?) I mean, at this point we are due for an explanation of what the black smoke monsters are; they've been deus ex'd all to hell and if they don't get a decent explanation then the whole show might as well just quit.

I mean does anyone care about any of the members of Dharma? Honestly does anyone even care about Kate or Sun at this point, either? To be perfectly honest, they could have killed off all the characters except Ben and just kept going with the Sawyer-Dharma story and it'd have been fine by me because at this point I just don't give a shit about them.

I see your point but I don't completely agree. I didn't think that episode was great though. The few minutes featuring Christian Shepherd were what made the episode worth watching, really. Honestly, all I want from this show now is an explanation of Jacob, Richard Alpert and the Smoke Monster but I don't mind waiting because there's worse ways of wasting 45 minutes a week.

Oh and I want clarification on whether Penny is dead or not.

well i still care about the ones i ever cared about (which was pretty much all of them)

it seems more to me like they're coming to places they've been planning for a long time than that they're out of ideas

i mean it's pretty clear that it's leading somewhere that's already been decided rather than just introducing whatever shit they come up with

the smoke monster by the way has been called one of the founding mysteries of the show and will only be revealed in the sixth season

You cannot run out of ideas or jump the shark when this was the story they wanted to tell all along. The best way to describe the mythology LOST would be to put it like Damon Lindelof put it. And I'm paraphrasing here, "When we though LOST was going to only make it 10 episodes we were going to have to condense our idea of the show into a 10 episode arc that admittedly would have neglected to introduce much of the intricate story or side plots. Would we have met Dharma? Probably not it its entirety. Would we have met the Freighter folk? It really depends. But once we found out that people liked the show at the end of season 1 we sat down and created our mythology. If we weren't going to be given an end date the story we told was going to be much longer to accommodate, but the overall story we were going to tell remains the same... it's just a matter of WHEN we came to it."

I've never been a fan of much of the relationships on the show, but a lot of people are. When asked who Kate would end up with, the producers on the podcast for as long as I can remember have each said they know exactly who she is going to end up with, if at all.

What unanswered questions of old do you need? The major ones like the smoke monsters, the statue, Jacob, those are overarching mysteries that will be answered, but does it really matter to you when you get them? Enjoy the journey... not the destination.

Many people care about Dharma. Metric fuck-tons care about Dharma. It was rooted in the show since season 2, people love to learn about the stations and the scientists that seemingly got wiped out by Ben. Dharma is integral to the story of the show.

Yes but Richard Alpert. I want to know about him.

AND I WANT A GOOD FUCKING EXPLANATION TOO!

Um just because they planned out the mythology 6 years ago doesn't mean they didn't run out of ideas 6 years ago.

Yeah, I get that Dharma is important. But the new people they've introduced as part of the Dharma Initiative are flat and boring (I don't know why I expect much more than that... characters with real depth have always been pretty limited.)

My issue is that as they get further and further into the show, they drift further and further away from the core appeal. I keep waiting for it to come back around and it's not. And yeah, ok, so they know what the smoke monsters are and they aren't telling us. Fan-fucking-tastic. In the mean time, don't add more bullshit on top of them to make them fit the fucking made-up fairytale world. We can see that. It's pushing the limits of suspension of disbelief.

The core appeal of what? People on an island? That's cool but how many episodes could you add on top of trying to find Boar. If anything removing yourself from the serialized version of Castaway breathes new life or you get Gilligan's Island meets Grey's Anatomy.

Most smaller type mysteries are within the single-season arc or in the case of who was in the coffin...two-season arc.

I mean not many mysteries are lingering around from the first or second season or maybe even third.. and if they are then they are the few fundamental items.

Really? I kind of thought it was obvious what was going to happen as soon as Sayid refused to let Sawyer release him, but then when young Ben showed up to make the same offer, Sayid was all "Okay..... yeah. Let's go off in the woods together, young and defenseless version of a person who I hate for ruthlessly manipulating me into committing multiple murders".

I am sitting down to watch Episode 10 right now.

The episode description on abc.com is as follows:

    "He's Our You
    March 25, 2009
Things begin to unravel when one of the survivors goes rogue and takes matters into their own hands."

    their own hands.

Are you fucking kidding me, America?

I'm sure the reason why Ben becomes a ruthless killer is because as a child Sayid betrayed and shot him

also: WHEN WILL WE LEARN MILES'S BACK STORY?

He's my favorite character. Damn writer's strike last year or else we would have seen Miles's episode in season 4.

Yeah I thought the ending was pretty obvious.

And it's also pretty obvious for time paradox reasons that the island won't let babby Ben die.

Yeah, I want to know what's up with Faraday too. Especially since he's the only one who ever gives out any answers about this time travel shit.

EDIT: Even if they are vague and halting, and he has to be asked ten times before he finally says anything, and then he always gets interrupted by some Dramatic Occurrence just in time to stop him from divulging whatever he was about say.

obviously this was so they (the people who wrote this) could avoid giving away whether it was a "he" or a "she"

the use of "they" as a singular pronoun is the only way to avoid saying clumsy stuff like "into his or her own hands"

    It's still not grammatically correct.

They should have just said "he."

Actually he shot him from what looked like about 8 or 10 yards away; you can find the clip on Google Video and see. Anyhow, the range really doesn't matter; even if it had been at point-blank range, one bullet, especially from a handgun, isn't enough to reliably kill someone (even a kid). It's certainly possible to kill someone with one bullet, but it's far from guaranteed. In real life, only a small fraction of people who are shot actually die from their wounds, and that includes people who have been shot multiple times. Sayid's supposed to be a professional hitman here, who make a deliberate decision to kill Ben, but he pops him once and then runs off into the woods without finishing the job.

Of course, we know why the writers didn't have Sayid do the job right--Ben can't die in 1977, obviously.

Yeah, I think it's apparent that Ben's not dead, for obvious reasons. Jin is going to regain consciousness in a few minutes, see that Ben's been shot, put him in the van, and rush him back to the Dharma compound, where his life will be saved.

It strikes me as a bit of a cheap cop out that Ben won't remember it. Much more interesting if he always had remembered it. That said, his face was priceless when he woke up. It's good to see Ben without control of the situation.

If smokey takes part of you and uses that to analyze/judge you in the future, it's possible that it's not a cop out. Although it does kind of feel like one.

Last night's episode was pretty okay. Not a fan of Kate episodes, but she was looking hella good in that business woman suit thing. The first flashback was probably her best. At least next week is a Ben ep and he always has good ones.

Anyone think the chick who almost took Aaron looked an awful lot like Claire? I'm glad they finally brought her up cause I was beginning to think they forgot about her. That whole family is weird as hell with Christian looking like the king of the island or something.

Like how Lost is going down the track of free will vs fixed destiny.

Miles is the best. I think everyone thinks that.

I'm getting kind of sick of Kate... Jack, too. It's all about Sayid and Locke. And Jin, and Sawyer, and Miles, and I want more Faraday.

EDIT: \/ Yeah more of him too

Disappointing episode but I wasn't really expecting much from a Kate-centric episode.

Definitely had the best comic relief moments for quite a while.

Also an annoyingly intriguing ending. I wish I'd waited till next week to watch it so I could watch the next one too.

It would have been more interesting if Ben remembered being shot by Sayid and that's why later Ben makes him do all his dangerous dirty work to get back at him.

MPR, good luck. I would recommend stopping at the finale of season three because the show jumped the shark a while ago.

That's their apparent function. That's a long way from us actually knowing what they are or any other detailed information about them.
