Oh, well, my apologies.
Well I mean, as you should be. How dare you post an interesting video in a JJ Abrams related thread, right?

cannot WAIT for Dr Linus.
I thought this might've been the place to ask.
1. What made Lost a show worth watching?
2. What was the explanation for the rabid polar bear that was shot in season one?
1. Addiction at this point, mostly. If you don't like the characters enough to ignore the ridiculous scifi elements, you shouldn't bother watching.
2. Supposed to be explained in season 6. It damn well should be, they've had 3000 years to make up an answer.
1. engaging mysteries, likeable characters, writing that's better than most of what's on tv (though not spectacular) and evangeline lily's petite frame
2. a) the island has some yet-to-be-explained teleporting and matter-transporting abilities, and b) it looks like the dharma initiative (an organisation that was studying the island in the 70s) had a zoology program studying, among other non-indigenous animals, polar bears
but yes as atmosfear said a full explanation -- which will probably be tied in the very mystery of the island itself -- has not arrived yet
and it's pretty obvious at this point that they are not merely making things up as they go along
The counterpoint here is that if they weren't making it up as it went along and it was truly planned to that level of detail (protip: no TV show in the history of TV shows ever has been for a billion reasons the least of which being the unpredictability of seasonal scheduling, ratings, character/plot tests, etc so fuck off gwahir, jj abrams is still a hack) then the story is so fucking terrible they should have aborted it pre-pilot and I want my 5 seasons' worth of time back.
Unlike in Cloverfield and the Lost universe, just because JJ Abrams says something in real life doesn't mean it is true, relevant, or really even noteworthy.
The only real mystery surrounding the polar bears is.. why was a skeleton in the Tunisian desert? That's all.
Beyond that, the polar bear mystery has been sufficiently explained.

But even then, a fairly logical conclusion can be made.

Yeah there's really not a polar bear issue tbh
He has a point. The character of Sun was written specifically for what's-her-face as she originally auditioned for Kate but they still wanted her in the series. Also, the numbers were originally just a device to introduce Hurley to Rousseau but fan reaction made them decide to make them a bigger part of the plot. That's just two examples but I'm sure there's many more.
i never said it was exactly as planned, because of course not. but they always knew what the island was, what the polar bear was doing, what's the smoke monster, etc etc etc etc. the framework has always been there and never changed (although maybe things have been added to) but details like individual characters and smaller plot points have changed. i know for a fact they made ben such an influential character pretty much because michael emerson was so awesome.
it would be ludicrous to think or claim that they had EVERY ASPECT of the story planned out, but they always knew the shape of the story and the nature of the foundational mysteries.
1) The story was not sufficiently flushed out until 2 point in the show's history... a) halfway through season 1 when the realized the show was receiving ratings and they need to get a general idea of the over arching mythology of the story. b) the point in season 3 when they reached an end-date for the series. This is evident in the essence of pussy-footing around in the season 3 when it seems like the story is slow to progress because they didn't know how much time they had.
Damon Lindelof cannot be quoted enough as saying: "The end was always in sight, and we always knew what it was going to be, but it was the journey of whether we got there in 3 seasons or 5 or 6 to tell the story."
And even after all this if they were lying and making it up season after season.. then who cares? It was a good story.
2) The numbers have significance and I read through some rumor mills that we will learn why. Here is a excerpt from an ARG that occurred years ago to explain WHY the numbers...
"Here's the story with numbers. The Hanso Foundation that started the Dharma Initiative hired this guy Valenzetti to basically work on this equation to determine what was the probability of the world ending in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Valenzetti basically deduced that it was 100 percent within the next 27 years, so the Hanso Foundation started the Dharma Initiative in an effort to try to change the variables in the equation so that mankind wouldn't wipe it itself out. Here is the thing TOGS: We don't question what egotistical show creators with dedicated fanfags have said. We question the veracity of the statements because they have an awful lot of incentive to lie about it. "No, we threw some random shit together and then sorted out the pieces" doesn't appeal to fans at all, does it?
There's holes if you want to poke at the story--both of Lost, and of the creators. And like I said, if they really intended for the basis of the story to be an island dislodged in time then they are complete and utter faggots and I wish they had told me before I got committed to it.
On the other hand, being able to come up with something semi-cognizant based on a hodge-podge of plot points it somewhat impressive.
To TV Guide Magazine: "All I can say is that we've spent the last five years answering the question, 'Were you guys making it up as you go along?' 'Do you know what you're doing?' It's a great comfort to know that in about six months people will stop asking us that question. They'll basically say 'You were making it up as you go along,' or they'll go 'Wow, you really had a plan.'"
Lindelof also said: "What we don't want to do ... is explain what our intention was. At a certain point, it doesn't matter what our intention was, and we want the fans to vigorously debate certain aspects of the show. Some things will be very conclusive, other things people will think are more conclusive than we meant them and some will be more ambiguous than we meant them, but it wouldn't be Lost if five years from now people weren't still arguing over what they wanted it to be."
