If I've been fluent in a language for five years and actively speaking it for the past couple years, I wouldn't say I "recently" picked it up. it doesn't make a fucking difference because the aphasia is based on a physical disruption to the brain; she was just as likely to lose the ability to speak korean or klingon.

uh i disagree, with all my years of medical training

there's a huge neurological difference between one's first language and more recently acquired language. (do you imagine sun thinks in english? of course not.) english to you and me is largely instinctive, or close to it. it's still possible to lose the ability to talk, but a language you've spoken for five years would be FAR from that. there's a world of difference in the brain between knowledge so deeply ingrained as your first language and a language learnt in the classroom or from a tutor. think of one as remembering how to ride a bike and the other as remembering all the steps to a complicated, multi-stage exercise. there are neurologically relevant differences there, whether you believe it or not.

tl;dr it is plausible enough to fit in a sci-fi tv show; whether you like it or not as a plot device is another damn matter

Actually she is just as likely to lose the ability to speak Korean. There are plenty of documented cases of people waking up from comas speaking second languages.

Sorry Gwahir I am not going to teach you neurobiology just to fix your ignorant perception of a sci fi TV show.

But here let me do you a favor:

Oh look I'll even click the first link for you:

all their languages. In the present work, language recovery of 20 bilingual Friulian–Italian
aphasics was investigated. Thirteen patients (65%) showed a similar impairment in both lan-
guages (parallel recovery), four patients (20%) showed a greater impairment of L2, while three
patients (15%) showed a greater impairment of L1. Despite the many hypotheses advanced to
account for nonparallel recovery, none of them seems to provide satisfactory explanations.
The study of bilingual aphasics with parallel impairment of both languages allows us to verify
the hypothesis whereby grammatical disorders in aphasia depend on the specific structure of
each language. As far as rehabilitation programs for multilingual aphasics are concerned, sev-
eral questions have been raised, many of which still need a satisfactory answer.

the very next paragraph in that link you provided says:

this may be true. in fact, the reading i've done has only suggested the viewpoint i gave above, but if that's one side of the debate, it is credible enough as a viewpoint.

what this means is that even if it isn't actually a real thing that works that way, then the things we know about the brain (even if we're arguing about them still) makes it plausible enough for a TV show.

do you even read what anyone (except for you) says? we're barely disagreeing. you're saying THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS. i'm saying it may not work exactly like that, but there are neurological differences between first languages and other languages (i did not know that was up for debate, but it's still a claim supported by research) that make it... i'm looking for a phrase other than "plausible enough for TV", because i've had to repeat myself so much. do you think by "plausible enough for TV" i mean "completely medically and factually accurate"? i mean house is plausible enough for TV (mostly).

    and then i said this:

i actually liked it more than the richard one from a few weeks ago? i'm sorry but the richard one just bugged me a bunch. i don't know. i think i'm just turned off by the richard one so i'm harsher on it than it deserves.

i thought this one could have shaved ten minutes off desmond's flash sideways and given us ten more of on-island story. i don't want everything to be rushedly crammed into the final episode -- i was hoping for a steady bleed of information, and we've kind of gotten several slow trickles from several points of view.

which, i guess, is lost. so it probably reflects more on my iffy expectations. HOWEVER, i am wary of the last episode(s) being just rushrushrushrush.

You know what bothered me the most about this episode? At the end Desmond requests the manifest to his flight so he can show them all something special. Um, excuse me, but how does he know that his fellow passengers on his flight from Australia to LA are important? Yeah Charlie (the drug addict), who was on his flight, had some mystical experience but Daniel, who was not on his flight, also had a mystical experience. No logical person would then suddenly jump to the conclusion that Flight 815 was special in any way.

the way I understood it was that he is now conscious (conscious is the wrong word to use, but I can't think of a better one. What I mean is that he is aware of the happenings in both timelines) in both timelines, just as he was in The Constant

which would mean that he needs the manifest because he knows from his island life that all of them are important in the non-island life

and that he must show them so that they can all experience what he experienced when he met penny

I reread that and it was worded really badly so here's a new one:

When he met penny, both timelines fused into one in his mind, making him aware of the happenings from both. He now knows that he must get the manifest and gather all of these people together, so that he can "show" them what he experienced when he met penny in the stadium.

I guess that makes sense. I still feel like the writing for this episode was completely sub par.

Hmmm. The chinese guy who introduced Hugo at the start... He hasn't aged over, what? 40 years?

Nor did he recognise him from the island in the 60s.

Mmmm I guess it was hard to tell with the bright light on his face.

But then again, he didn't sound any older.

Well, seeing that the flashsideways world isn't even real, but more a collective figment of the imagination, I think it makes more sense that the Chinese guy looks the same as when Hurley met him in the real world.

Anyone notice how Desmond still says "brotha" even though he got that from sailing around the world in that voyage that landed him on the island in the first place.?

And I dont think siyad shot desmond but it makes me wonder why desmond is so important that fakelocke wanted him dead?
