I'm kinda guessing that's where the knife comes into it, too.

How was she the guardian and the smoke monster? And why is the knife necessary to kill both of them?

I would HOPE we will find that out in the remaining episodes. I'm not too optimistic about it though.

This show is only going to make sense months afterwards when the superfans fill the plotholes in themselves.

Meh. Im not expecting any answers to any questions posed by the latest episode, I just expect answers to a couple more questions from the first two seasons that we all forgot about, along with a bunch more mysteries for us to make up ourselves.

that was an excellent, excellent episode. tight, fast-moving, filled with information and plot points, some nice character moments, surprises... it had it all. practically unrecognisable as an episode of lost when you compare it to the most recent few episodes. (actually the sub one was also good.) also, the music in this episode was some of the series's finest.

I'm hoping that Richard isn't dead. I'd be pretty disappointed if that's how the rubbed him out.

Also, the writing wasn't fucking stupid this time, which I liked.

yeah, look, i'm okay with him being dead (because we are at the end of the show) but that did seem to happen too quickly. it needed a moment of, "huh." you know, right after. just so we could all go, "huh."

also, now taking bets: will flocke succeed destroy the island?

reasons for: the producers have always said incredibly clearly that this will be THE END of lost. no question mark, no maybes, no dot dot dot. they've also said that the show isn't primarily about jacob and the MIB; it's about the island. the island is it. we've also seen the island move, so we can gather that destroying it is possible. also, we've had successively more dramatic explosions each season finale culminating in jughead at the end of s5, and the only way they could top that would be destroying the entire island.

reasons against: come on. jack was JUST made the new guardian. that would be one hell of a quick failure.

Just watched the episode today, it was pretty fucking good. I hope the finale is as fast paced as this episode. I was also considering their "mom" could have been the smoke monster but she died while getting stabbed(as did Jacob) but didn't Siyad try stabbing flocke and failed? I have my hopes up that the finale will be epic so hopefully I wont be disappointed.

Not to mention they showed one scene on a prior episode where eveything was underwater like Atlantis...

Sayid was instructed not to let the MIB speak or it wouldn't work and Sayid let the MIB speak. The Mother was stabbed in back and did not have a chance to speak before she was stabbed. Also, Jacob is not a smoke monster so I don't think smoke monster rules apply to him.

we have no reason to believe that she was a smoke monster specifically

it seems weird that she'd be a monster AND the guardian, which she was

togs: there's no way on earth a human being could survive the conk to the noggin that frank got. just inconceivable. and even if he did (he COULDN'T have) he drowned. i think frank's out for the count. haven't seen him in the flash sideways though so who knows

yeah, there's a point there -- although it's not unreasonable to think that the guardian is imbued with physical powers a la perhaps vampire slayers. or she just did it with her smarts somehow. she's clearly not just a middle aged lady -- she's like a billion years old for starters.

okay, maybe she is a smoke monster. i'll give you a maybe. (we'll probably never know.)

    here's what i want answered:

    -what is the light?
-why did it turn MIB into a smoke monster?
-what is the significance of the flash sideways? (and why is the island under water in it, and why is it some "alternate reality" instead of actual reality)
-what is the mechanism by which the island works its will, if there is one? what is ANY mechanism by whcih the island works? i don't want a full explanation for this, just SOMETHING.

i don't know if there's anything else i'm very curious about, that i think we're owed an explanation for. we've been given so much this season already, even though it doesn't necessarily feel that way.

I know, but I miss him so. I'm still going through denial stage.

It should also be noted that the island underwater was in the sideways timeline. Interestingly enough, with the island underwater many more of our Losties lives are better.

I'd say flocke destroys the island by making juliets "whack-a-bomb" succeed, making those "flash-sideways" all happen after.

i know islandantis was in sideways timeline. we all know. but it has to mean something. what, it just sunk on its own for some reason because the pocket of energy under it was neutralised? i mean, that's conceivable, but unsatisfying.

in the current island timeline, did jughead actually detonate? because it's absolutely insane to imagine that juliet survived a hydrogen bomb exploding right in her face. so, i'm confused.

It's made all of their lives better in one aspect but worse in another. Like even though Sayid's love of his life is still alive, she's in love with his brother. Desmond finally is respected by Widmore, but is not in love with Penny anymore. Jin and Sun are madly in love with each other but Sun's father disapproves so much that he puts a hit on Jin.

    prediction:

sawyer will die in the final episode, and smokey will take the form of his dead body

the final scene of the whole show will be jack on a beach, cooking fish and shit, when sawyer (MiB) comes over and they have a conversation similar to the one at the end of season 5 between jacob and his brother, probably with a boat or a plane arriving at the island

    ok revised prediction:

marsellus wallace is sat chilling on his balcony when his gay nazi neighbour comes in and shoots patrick bateman just after he confesses the murders he commited to his unfazed lawyer, shaun, who then goes out to his garden to play Playstation with his chained-up best friend who is now a zombie

I believe he meant that implying that what we're viewing is cyclical is detrimental to the viewing process, and I'd agree. The idea that these people do no affect the endgame because everything ends up the same would be a major let down.

well if it helps I was only pretending to be angry to further my joke, I see why people wouldn't like my ending

I'd be satisfied though, just to see Jack ultimately connecting with the island is pretty awesome and a good outcome

Well, to be honest, I've thought the exact same thing about the end before, only swap Locke for Sawyer.

The problem I have with the implicaiton that everything is cyclical, that unless something changes this time or implies future success, then it's a fruitless endeavor. Books, movies or games where I realize that what I'm watching is just something that is going to repeat forever frustrate me, because what is the point? There is nothing remarkable about watching a cycle. In the laundry, the red shirt will always spin. I want the story where the laundry has spun for years, and due to some unforeseen circumstance, has stopped spinning. What happens after the cycle is broken.

Besides, Jacob's "It only ends once," makes me think that there is a definitive ending that is being worked towards, and not just the start of a repeat cycle. If it ends with Jack waking up in the jungle because we've just witnessed a loop, I'll be frustrated, and disappointed.

One of the greatest offenders of this to me is

    Spoiler

In any case, it's only a few more days. I'm really looking forward to the finale.

It wouldn't surprise me if they leave that stone unturned until the DVD release (when, apparently, lots of mysteries will be solved in DVD extras - nice one guys, force us to shell out to find out how you explain your own plotholes)
