    Default Star Trek (2009)

When I heard oh-so-long ago that they were re-doing Star Trek with new actors, I was scared.

When I heard that JJ Abrams, who has come out and said that he was not a Trekkie, and was never interested in Star Trek was directing, I was appalled.

When I heard some of the casting decisions, I was down-right turned off. How could these people take over for the crew of MY ENTERPRISE?

However, when I saw the first internet teaser trailer, I was intrigued.

Then I saw the second one.

    And the third.

    And some clips.

When I sat down in the theater mere hours ago, and the lights began to dim, I was apprehensive but hopeful. Would they destroy my beloved Trek?

A very short 2 hours later, I stood up, feeling like I had watched one of the best films I had ever seen.

Normally I'm not a big fan of the more recent action-packed-try-to-pull-in-as-many-people-as-you-can-even-though-it's-a-star-trek-film films. However, this film was fucking magnificent.

Major events happen in this film that did not happen in the original Star Trek universe, and as far as I could tell, everything is explained quite nicely. I couldn't pick out any lose ends, and I'm a big fan of trying to pick shit apart.

Don't go into this moving expecting to see your normal slow-paced Star Trek film. Right from the beginning you start out with an EPIC SPACE BATTLE. The film is shot very much in JJ Abrams style, with the camera always moving, and always close in on the action. It reportedly caused a bit of motion sickness with some of the IMAX crowd, but it was quite watchable in a regular theater.

The film moves along at a very brisk pace, and that's really my only complaint. Normally when you sit down to watch something from the Star Trek franchise, things tend to plod along steadily, but much slower most other movies. Star Trek moves, and it moves fast. So fast, in fact, that you're probably going to miss a lot of the small things that are going on.

The acting was superb. Chris Pine and Karl Urban played Kirk and McCoy beautifully. The facial expressions and speech patterns brought in just enough of the original characters to make you believe you were really watching younger versions of them on screen. Chris Pine was the perfect Kirk. He took all the good bits of Shatner, the swagger, the smirk, and blended it with his own.

And then there's Zachary Quinto. While it took me awhile to see past Sylar from Heroes, he really was a much younger Spock. He played the part beautifully.

Simon Pegg was the Scotty we love, full of energy, vigor, and humor. John Cho pulls off Sulu quite well, considering his limited amount of dialogue, and Zoe Saldana plays the Uhurua we really all wanted to see (in more ways than one).

The acting, the EPIC SPACE BATTLES, the visual effects, the splashes of comedy all help you overlook the weakest part of the film, which is the plot.

Don't get me wrong, the plot was good, but it's completely overshadowed by everything else.

It's your typical Star Trek plot. The Federation vs. Bad Guy(s), culminating in the ultimate battle at the end of the film. However, even The Bad Guy in this film oozes awesome. Eric Bana plays a Romulan completely bent out of shape and looking for some misplaced revenge over his lost wife & child. While he looks very little like the Romulans you're used to, he doesn't act like it either, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. He's cool, almost chill. Very unlike most of your Star Trek supervillans of previous films. They did an awesome job of humanizing him as a villan, and it really works.

I'm completey astounded at how awesoem this film turned out. As a die-hard trekkie, I loved it. My wife, who's not as big of a trekkie as I was, loved it just as much.

I think any Sci-Fi fan who's even remotely familliar with Star Trek would love this film, and because you're all internet nerds reading an internet forum, you're going to love it too.

I can't stand Star Trek in any of its previous forms, but I'm pretty psyched about the movie. It looks great, actually.

I read a negative review of it that sounded pretty stupid, to be honest, but bad reviews of things I look forward to bum me out anyway. I'm glad to hear a more positive one. I'll see it whenever it comes out here.

EDIT: oh, it's out already. Well, I'll see it soon.

I honestly don't care for Star Trek at all, but I'm being forced to go tonight. (I'd almost rather see a chick flick to be honest.) I really hope that it's as good as you say it is tengu. Great review.

I know nothing about Star Trek besides the few episodes of the series with Patrick Stewart. That said, the movie looks incredibly awesome and I can't wait to see it. Plus Simon Pegg and John Cho are in it which is awesome.

I went to see this last night, and though I've watched Enterprise and the essential TNG, I've never considered myself a Star Trek fan. Going into this I had no expectations whatsoever based on that I barely knew the source material. I have to say that I loved everything about this movie. The graphics were beautiful, the epicness of the battles reminded me of how I felt at the beginning of Star Wars Episode 3 during the Battle of Corusant. The storyline was solid, as every character was introduced I couldn't help but crack a grin. Especially at the appearance of Simon Pegg as Scotty talking about "Admiral Archers dog."

I'll probably end up seeing this a few more times in theater

Ok, I am hoping to force some comrades into going to this with me tonight. To Tengu and any others who have seen it, should I go see it baked? Is it going to be that much better that way? I mean I already assume so, and I probably won't have a chance to check this before I go, so I guess the question is moot.

I just got back from seeing Star Trek. I know little to nothing of the star trek universe but that did not stop me from loving that film. The story was amazing the visuals were outstanding, the acting great and I must recommend this film to anyone with an interest in space based science fiction.

I wouldn't do it, you'll miss a lot of the tiny stuff that makes the film great. Second time though, go completely blitzed

Is it relevant to mention that there is a "research project" about Klingon opera, and that Klingon operas are being staged (in the original Klingon, of course)?

The research group is called The Klingon-Terran Research Ensemble, who are currently in residence at the Watermill Center, and they are staging "authentic" renditions of the Klingon opera U (pronounced like the "oo" in "oomph").

    This Star Trek movie takes place prior to the first encounter between the Klingons and the Federation, so there t'aint no Klingons in the new Star Trek ;_;

Finally... some 100 real life Terrans native to the planet Earth speak Klingon fluently.

This is completely and totally wrong. While there are no klingons in the movie, they are mentioned.

    Oh okay whatever.

Blame NPR for this piece of misinformation. Either that, or my misinterpretation of their words.

I was never a massive Star Trek fan, sci fi really isn't my thing. However, I have to admit, seeing some of the trailers for it, it got me wondering "Should I go see this?". I haven't heard many reviews of it yet, Mark Kermode reviewed it on BBC News yesterday and was really impressed with it, he gave it a glowing review, how many more critics will do the same I don't know.

The thing that got me excited for this one was Zachary Quinto. When I heard his name for Spock, that is when I began to think this might actually be good.

I just got back from seeing Star Trek at the IMAX for mothers day as my mom is a huge trekkie. Amazing film. The action was fairly constant without feeling like a Michael Bay movie, the plot was pretty good (I liked the cop out of "because he came back in time and screwed around with the time line, this is basically an alternate time line"), the acting was great, and overall I felt very satisfied coming out of the theater.

    Two thumbs up.

Also, Kirk in bed with a green chick was an awesome addition.

NPR misinforming listeners? I don't believe it! I actually used to like listening to them until I really started paying attention to some of the garbage that they try to pass off. I still enjoy their classical music and Wait, Wait... though.

Also, Star Trek was pretty entertaining and had a larger than life feel to it, and that's saying a lot coming from me because I am the anti-trekkie.

I've only ever watched some Star Trek TNG, so I don't know anything about the original characters. In fact, I really only wanted to see this movie cause of JJ Abrams, but it was very well done and all the trekkies in the theater said they loved it.
It gets a 9.5 only because there wasn't more naked green chick in it.

I was the only person in the group of people I saw it with who knows anything about Star Trek, but while I don't claim to be an expert I do know quite a bit about the original TV show. I thought they really went a long way to try and placate all the trekkies with great little quotes and phrases from the original. I loved the movie, rousing success.

I have never considered myself a star trek fan, but I really enjoyed this movie - DaiTengu's review pretty much sums it up, although I was hoping for maybe a couple more epic space battles - and more of Diora Baird (the green alien chick)

I have been a long time trekkie, and though I don't wear the goofy outfits or speak Klingon I have seen (multiple times) every episode of every series and movie of the franchise.

I was a bit skeptical going in, but I have always belived that even bad Trek is better than no Trek. I was very impressed with most of the movie, but then I'm easily entertained by shiney things. The one thing that bothered me a bit was the Chekov character, I felt he was a bit over done.

I'm no massive fan of ST, and I will see this film, but I can't help shaking the feeling Simon Pegg will just butcher Scotty.
    Has he?
Or does he just play his usual simon peggish socially inept character with a star trek twist

He's in it for about 25 minutes and is very much a minor character, near the end of the film.

    And he's a little... hyperactive.

Oh really, thank god for that.
I was dreading seeing him in it. He was good in spaced but thats it.

Yeah hyperactive sounds like how he'd do it...wanker.

No, Scotty is not ruined. He' does it fairly well I would say. I went and saw this with my girlfriend and it is by far the best Trek movie in a long ass time. I LOVED it. I didn't get the
    Spoiler
, but other than that it felt very well put together.

And with the way the movie plays out, it opens up the door to more movies and maybe even new series in this new "timeline". I would LOVE to see another Star Trek movie with this cast. Also, the guy they got to play McCoy was EPIC, he was so spot on, it was incredible, best. casting. ever.

For nerds, Karl Urban played Éomer in The Lord of the Rings.

Edit: that's right, they got a guy from new Zealand to speak with a southern accent.

The way he talked out of the side of his mouth, his facial expressions, his mannerism's, his attitude...even his voice! I'll admit it was the first time I had been really impressed with casting.

    He had a dialect coach.

Also, he's been a trekkie since he was 7 years old, and is, I'm told, the only actor in the entire cast who actively sought out the part. he played.

People who clap at movies should be shot.

Unless they are clapping after an Above the Influence advertisement.

When I went to see Ironman the night it opened last year at midnight, I went really really high, and at the end of the movie everyone around me started clapping. I was really confused so I turned to my buddy sitting next to me and practically yelled "Why the fuck are we clapping?" I hadn't meant to say it so loud, but all the people who were clapping stopped and stared at me for a second, then left. My friends almost fell out of their chairs laughing.

So fuck moviegoing clappers, and because of the great success of that one time, I will now make it my goal to make them feel stupid as shit for clapping after movies every chance I get.

You guys are shit. If people are sufficiently moved or excited enough at the end of a movie to applaud it, why is that bad? Will they ruin your experience of the end credits?

During the movie is another thing, but we're not talking about that.

So it's not weird for me to applaud after watching a DVD at home by myself or with 1 or 2 more people?

A cinema isn't on your own with 1 or 2 people. It's a crowd of people which is a lot different.

Besides, yes, even at the cinema it's certainly weird, but I'm not going to stand in anyone's way for it.

I'm eventually going to build a movie theater in my basement, with seating, surround sound, a popcorn machine, a high-end projector & everything. (and a wet bar)

    My hobbies are expensive

So then, if I'm not applauding for myself (since a cinema is "different" from watching a movie on my own), and I'm obviously not applauding for the people on screen (since they can't hear my adulation)...

...who exactly am I applauding for? The other movie-goers? Does my applause enhance their cinematic experience?

It might enhance YOUR cinematic experience, which is why I'm happy for you to do it. (Personally, I find it kind of exhilarating when a cinema bursts into applause... it's needless, but its needlessness means it's sincere, uneffected, genuine. So yes, you'd be enhancing my cinematic experience, for that reason.)

The point is not that it's pointless. We agree on that. The people on the screen can't hear you. It's silly. But it's harmless, so everyone in this thread who makes it their mission to make people who applaud feel stupid because they are expressing their pleasure at the movie can go suck a dick.

Except you, sycld -- you can go not suck a dick.

tl;dr sometimes people are excited by a movie and react to that excitement with applause. if you feel that is stupid, don't do it, but don't look down on others because they like to do it, because that would make you an asshole.
