Default Music while you work out?

Who does it? Who doesn't? Why?

What are you listening to? Why?

Normally, I'd argue headphones are a waste while lifting weights because 99% of gyms have music on, and the wire may get in the way, and people loose intensity while playing with their damn ipods, the things break when weights are dropped on them, etc etc . But lately my gym has been playing nothing but slow speed rap for some reason (large influx of black people probably, no joke). It does suck away from your workout, slows you down and what not. A mix is normally on with everything from country to electronic, but this sucks.

So potential music for me to acquire for workouts?

    Thanks

There usually aren't too many people at the gym I visit, so my partner and I generally have control over the radio. We usually listen to a cd that he made with mostly ac/dc and metallica on it. I think that music is almost a necessity when you're working out, it keeps things from getting boring imo.

I personally like slower, calmer workout music though. I feel like I stay more focused if I have something calm playing.

I'm pretty good at keeping the wire out of my way. I can't work out without music, just can't do it. During weight training and sauna time I listen to whatever, but during cardio it is all metal all the time. It helps me zone out and focus on putting out maximum effort.

When lifting, I prefer to listen to something with a steady rhythm. Something with a pretty solid beat where the lyrics (I have a tendency to sing along under my breath if I know the words) won't screw up my breathing cycle. Usually some good hip hop for weight training. Then for running it's all about rock songs with lyrics I do know, although I'm sure I look like a fool cruising on the treadmill mouthing songs. But I keep my cardio music pretty fast paced. It helps me take my mind off the fact that I'm running. Because I hate running. I don't have a runner's build at all.

I have never listened to music while I run and don't see any need for it; my roommates think I'm crazy.

Sometimes I'll run for two hours, but I've never had the urge to add music to it, I usually get lost in my head and by the time I realize I'm already near the end of my route. I guess I kind of think of it like a meditation of sorts.

Well Music is nice, but I feel for some exercises, namely cleans and any exercise I'm jumping with, headphones suck. Maybe its just my cheap ass $10 headphones, but the cord is wicked long so its flying around or getting caught on something.

For Cardio, it is shown you will run faster and harder with faster music on, so I understand (and do) that. Tough to do intervals with music on though, so I invested in a GymBoss. Best $20 I've ever spent on anything for my workouts.

Guess I'm finding songs with a fast beat/tempo to them.

I actually have an OK GO workout track.
I hear the voices inside my head. They counsel me. They understand. They talk to me.

See I want to try out that Tabata stuff you were telling me about, but I don't have a workout partner, I noticed they mention the GymBoss on a Tabata website I saw, but what exactly is it/how well does it work?

The GymBoss is a timer unit. Basically you can set two different times and it rotates between counting down from it. So you want to do 20 second intervals with 10 seconds rest? It will count down 20, then 10, then 20, etc for you. It also has a stopwatch function. The really grand part is that it doesn't just beep, it screams! It can be set to vibrate too. Although the screaming beep is nice in case you don't use headphones or prefer to have it off you. Its smaller than an ipod, so its never in the way.

Honestly, I first got it for sprinting intervals a while back, and have been using it since. Set it for my single rest period of 30 secs during weight training, start a set when its done. Best $20 I've ever spent for workout equipment. Really helps keep the intensity up.

Also good choice on Tabata- that will leave you drenched in sweat.

    Ninja Edit:

    Official website:
    www.gymboss.com

But you can also get it off Amazon so if you have like a discount or whatever, check for it there.

I listen to a lot of techno/electronica and some heavy metal while working out. I get a better workout with those music types. It gets my adrenaline pumping and I'm able to do more. Great stuff.

Disturbed, that's all I would listen to when working out. So many songs of theirs just pump you up a lot.

Just ordered my GymBoss. Can't wait till it gets here, I'll be surprised if it actually takes more than three days, I mean, it's shipping from like 2 hours away from where I live.

I listen to egotistical rap and Nirvana/Alice in Chains/Lynyrd Skynyrd. I like rap when I'm lifting and more upbeat music when I'm running.

I don't really care about music when I'm lifting because there's a TV in our gym that is playing Around the Horn and PTI while I'm there, but I pretty much require music while running or I get bored and quit early

During lifting I listen to alot of Hardcore/Metal/Ska/Punk for the energy of the music and it gets me into the 'zone' during running I'll listen to ambient/dance/electronica to just have a fluid feel to everything. When on the skateboard(this is a part of my work out) I listen to tons of Nirvana, Trouble Andrew, MIA, Santigold or anything else I think is cool to skate too

Default Music while you work out

ever listened to lupe fiasco? common? etc?

I think your point of view about rap is wrong.. I dont say you have to like it.. but rap music is not only hating the world.. For example: 50 Cent - Candy Shop aint about hating the world, its about partying ....

    BTW.. hip-hop = the culture..

Listen to whatever makes gets you excited or pumps you up. When I lift I like heavy or fast music, but when I run I like to listen to classical or something more complex that will keep my mind on the music and off the run. Doesn't really work like that for lifting though, because you really have to focus on the lift.

As for the chord getting in the way, you can always put it under your shirt.
