    Cool Steam

Hey, I'm a huge fan of Steam, and I know there is another thread by LargeDuck here:
    http://www.casualdiscourse.com/forum...ighlight=steam

However, that thread is really old and I'd like to do a little more with the thread. Right now, I know we're a really tight knit community and most of us are probably familiar with the platform. Though for the record let me write up a little summary.

    What is Steam?
Steam is an on-line game platform developed by Valve Corporation that supports digital distribution and acts as a multiplayer and communication platform. It is software that acts as library for you to buy, download, and update your games whenever you are connected online. There's even an achievement catalog that come with most newer games. This might be mandatory now I'm not sure. Many newer PC games today like Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 require steam activation, and if you want, you can add non-Steam games to your library for convenience. Every game you buy through or requires Steam activation will be hosted forever on your Steam account, so you can download and install any game at any time after you've uninstalled it.

    How much does it cost?
The software and the service it provides is absolutely free. There's a community there for support. If you have friends that use the service then you can join in together for multiplayer games. You even get your own little profile page so you and your friends can see each others game library, see what your friends are playing right now, and in-game chat client that so far hasn't been cumbersome or an annoying hindrance to my game playing.

What do I need to use Steam?
From the Steam website(GO HERE TO DOWNLOAD):
    http://store.steampowered.com/about/

    System Requirements
    Windows XP, Vista, or 7
    512 MB RAM
    1 Ghz or faster processor

Intel Mac, OS X version Leopard 10.5.8, Snow Leopard 10.6.3, or later.
    Two-button mouse strongly recommended

    1GB HD space (recommended)
    Internet connection (broadband recommended)

I don't have a lot of time or money to play games
There's a lot of good games by indie developers, compared to developers of major titles, that are anywhere from a $1 to $10, take little HD space, and can be thoroughly enjoyed over a day off to weeks. You can even find some older games on there though I recommend going to www.gog.com if you're looking for older games.

    I use Impulse/Origin/Direct2Drive/Desura/Beamdog/GoodOldGames/etc
That's cool. I'm not familiar with all the other clients. I tried D2D for a bit, and I still use GOG for older games. It is your preference, but I'm more familiar with Steam. I like their seasonal giveaways especially the massive developer catalog sales and their daily discounts. Plus, a lot of the newer games by indie developers are really fun to play and worth the five bucks.

So I think that is it. If anyone wants to add me my username is madpinorage and send me a PM on here. I guess if enough people here want to add each other over Steam I'll compile a list.
EDIT - Please post your username if you want to make some kind of a list and post if you want to be PMed on here before you add someone over Steam. I sure as hell do.

I also have an extra copy of Half Life 2 and Episode 1 should anyone want to trade.

While this is a nice thread, I'm pretty certain everyone and his dog knows about steam.

I hate steam. Why do I have to be connected to the internets to play a single player game. My internets aren't fast and I never did play that game... FUCK YOU VALVE!

That sounds like a personal problem, Atomic. Maybe you should move out of the backwoods and get broadband like a real person.

I still don't understand why steam removed the "start steam offline" feature.

Well technically it's still there, but you have to log on to steam online to access it.

Well, whoever this person is was talking to me about Dragon Age and mods. Was a polite conversation but I'm not really going to continue with someone unless I know who it is. Or maybe it was just random person from the internet in which case I would have removed them anyways because I don't talk to random people from the internet. That's really creepy.

Well you only gotta be online once, then you can play it in offline mode.

Just set properties to "Don't keep this game up to date", and then go to "Switch to offline mode"

I know this works for sure because that's how I gave my brother some games. I went over to his house and did some of that for him so he could play some of the single player games I bought.

Yeah, I tried that. Doesn't work as well as you might think. With Fallout New Vegas I installed off the CD then the update that took days and VOILA! It's corrupted. That kind of stuff sucks.

    Cool

Just purchased Fear 3 a few days ago when it was 50% something off.

Games I'm excited to play when I finish assembling and setting up my PC:

    Fear 3
    Skyrim
    Dead Space 2
    Civilization 5
    Tropico 4
    L.A. Noire
    The Witcher 2

And I want to play Half Life 2 plus all episodes, Portal, and Portal 2 on ultra settings. I was pushing it playing high settings on my laptop, but now I'd like to see how much smoother it would play.

I'm waiting on these games to get some serious discounts before I purchase them:
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
    Battlefield 3
    Saints Row 3
    Serious Sam 3
    Total War Shogun 2

I'm on the fence about The Darkness II. Kingdoms of Amalur looks interesting.

I'm looking forward to playing Max Payne 3, Darksiders II, and Bioshock Infinite.

I can't think of any other games to be excited for.

Could always try right clicking and "verifying game integrity" to try and fix any bad/missing files.

I know it probably isn't much, but if you want a 25% off Bethesda coupon that expires on March 1st if you would like. It came from Steam's winter sale thingymabobby and I have no interest in using it. So I guess $45 for Skyrim.. though you may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere, just let me know, I'll give it to you.

I'll probably try it again one day but the number one thing I do before I buy a game is make sure it doesn't say steam on the back. Some day in the distant future when I have a fast connection I'll catch up.

Yeah I used to hate steam too, it was becoming too overwhelming, and the way they manage CS 1.6 servers has become really really shitty, so it was pissing me off, but Steam has gotten a lot better lately. Now it's just my one stop shop to playing my plethora of games that comes from the huge list of steam sales there always is.

I didn't like steam when it first came out, but it's been awesome for a number of years now imo.

I alpha-tested Steam's first incarnation. I was in with some of the developers from my time involved with the Anti-Cheat community.

Thanks but I already own Skyrim. That first part of the list are games that I own. Skyrim was the first time prepurchasing a game on Steam, and I remember waiting up all night for the game to finish activating. I was cursing at myself saying to myself, "come on! Let me just play an hour of this game so I can go to bed."

Those are the best! When I can get like 50 games for $50!

Also, I buy the humble indie bundle every time they release a new one.

    EVERY. TIME.

Oh :P, it just shows that you have 0 hours of gameplay on it that's why I assumed you haven't .

and it's crazy because those sales are like $150 off... but no way, no way would I ever be able to beat all those games. I'd have to give up playing all my multiplayer games for a year just to beat all of those.

I rarely play multiplayer games. Even thought I have a space-guild of my own, I'm still playing SWTOR like it's a single-player game.

I have an extra copy of Half Life 2, HL2 Episode 1, and Dead Horde http://store.steampowered.com/app/27940/?snr=1_4_4__43 .

I thought about purchasing Sims 3 with all DLC mostly at 66% off, but all the DLC racks up to $200.
