I've been away from my home PC enough that I'm not burnt out on D3 yet. But yay, another GW2 beta! Hopefully the last one before its imminent release!

The anticipation is giving me blu-balls, especially considering that I had to miss the last open beta and stress tests!

Have there been any significant developments that have occured? It appears that the mesmer got a lot of work done to it, especially with the greatsword. It also appears that some nerfs to the elementalist have scepter/dagger ele's singing the blues. Guardians seem to still be grousing about a lack of range.

Elementalists still seemed absurdly powerful to me, and mesmers wanting. Perhaps however it's just me.

Anything you're worried about, regarding your favorite pet profession or in general?


EDIT: For anyone still pursuing HoM rewards, there's a special event in GW1 that is running now until August 30th.

Completing the 4 special quests starting at Wayfarer's Reverie (one for each expansion + GWEN) will give your character a random Tormented Weapon. Each quest can only be completed once per account.

In addition, ALL special bonus weekend events are in effect. That means double Luxon/Kurzick title track points, double Sunspear/Lightbringer points, double XP for skill caps, double EotN reputation points, etc.

Less than 24 hours, I count the seconds. I just upgraded my computer because the old one finally gave in. In the recent stress tests the optimizations have been really great. I think I'll be rolling a human warrior. After testing Elementalist, Thief, Mesmer, Guardian and Warrior, I decided Warrior is the most fun.

I know nothing about GW2, apart from you guys saying it will be amazing.
Not even looked into it at all until now.
Friend comes on Steam, asks if I'm getting it because him and 10 million other people I know are getting it.
10 minutes later I have a receipt for GW2.

It is only now, after I've bought it, that I start looking into this game. (I blame free to play business model, this never would have happened if it was monthly pay.)

Yeah I'm liking how you can do anything with anyone and still get xp for it. I have had a few cool public events with other people.

I'm running it on max settings, looks pretty good. I don't think I'd go as far as 'pure art' though lol.
I'm playing sylvari...everythings so colourful. I was expecting it to be a bit more gritty tbh.

What server are you guys on?

Lol. They are too, too numerous to easily summarize.

Old Republic and WAR are more or less like WoW: they are EQ-like games. Classes all fall into types based upon their roles in a group: they are tanks, healers, or DPS, and some games also have separate utility and crowd-control roles. Classes MAY be able to fulfill more than one role, but they can only ever strictly do one thing at a time. One further "innovation" is the introduction of solo content, which is usually strictly separated from group content. There are typically dozens upon dozens of abilities for each class, all of which are usually hot-keyed, even if only a very small subset of abilities are used with any frequency.

In GW2, there are no tanks, no healers, and no DPS. Every class has control abilities, support abilities, and extensive DPS abilities. They each have a unique feel through unique class mechanisms and class themes. Every class has access to a class-specific selection of self-healing ability and can equip one at a time, and though there are other healing abilities in the game, there is a far greater emphasis on avoiding damage than constantly healing through it. At any point, you have access to something like 17 to 25 abilities depending on the class. Some abilities are tied to the weapon choice and some are individually selectable.

There's so many more differences it's not funny. Most of them are for the better.

Anyway... the one thing that I'm not a fan of is the extreme separation of PvP from PvE. They are two completely different progressions, two completely separate arenas of play, with the only intersection being the server-wide bonuses achieved from capturing objectives in World vs. World. That's ok I suppose, but I almost miss the feeling of competition in the open world, where players almost cannot help but cooperate. But really this is all theoretical to me, since I engage in "care-bear" PvE anyway, while I only dabble in PvP on occasion... so the game's system suits me. But I just miss crazy things like enemies invading our cities, just out of the blue, and other player-driven surprises that open-world PvP opportunities allow.

One thing about elementalists: their skill set is insanely varied and flexible, but I notice that the effects from individual abilities are smaller in number than those of other classes. The environmental weapons that thieves can steal can be REALLY powerful, and it's so much fun to see what they get. Mesmer illusions give combat a surprisingly dynamic feel, though even the supposedly more "resilient" phantasms seem to get one shotted often enough, and so are really just shatter fodder (though they still exist long enough to execute their ability at least once... usually). Also, the illusion-generating downed abilities of mesmers seem to make it really easy to rally, since they seem to really distract enemies and also seem to have a LOT more health than mesmers' other illusions. The confusion effect on the downed nuke seems pretty strong too.

I just did Ascalon Catacombs today after turning 30 last night. I was surprised at how hard it was for being the relatively easy story mode. I also found it interesting at how the game is designed to sort of expect players to be downed and revived frequently. I'm also happy for the anvil at the dungeon entrance, as we completely screwed up the Lovers and thus it came in handy after my pants broke.

It was a lot of fun, and the rewards were good, though I realize I have a lot to learn about playing a more supportive role as a mesmer.

I got 30 a few days ago, headed straight for AC.
Found a group, couldn't enter the instance. When I could get in, someone else couldn't. When we were all in, we couldn't see each other or weren't in the same instance of AC. I think it will work if we are all on the same servers but yeah, that is if you can even enter the instance.

I'm 35 now really want to try dungeons in GW2.

I have to say though: getting my mesmer up to 30, I realize I'm not sure if I sufficiently like playing with him in a group. I think I may try another class that may be a bit more fun in a group setting for me, like an elementalist or an engineer, though I'm not sure yet.

Also, though the mesmer is definitely a workable class, I feel like a lot of the skills are wanting, so there isn't as much variety of usable skills as there are in other classes. I may jump ship and try another.

What crafting disciplines have you taken up? My mesmer is a tailor/cook. Cooking requires such a HUGE variety of ingredients and has so many multi-step crafting recipes (where you have to craft multiple precursors)...

I'm hunter/leatherworker. Got told it went well with ranger so yeah I did that.

Nice. Well like I said, I'm probably putting my mesmer aside for now, so if I go back to my level 8 elementalist, I'll take up tailoring and jewelcrafting or artifcing. Artificing has some rather nice potions of slaying, which increases damage against certain creatures, and that may make leveling a bit faster.

Well I just looted a back piece. Guess they're in the game now.

I'm still playing inbetween borderlands 2, although dishonored will be out soon so....

I just got my huntsman up to 266. Pretty happy.
