Thumbs up Arma II: DayZ - Zombie hiking simulator.

DayZ is a mod for Arma II, a game that is made from the same gaming engine that is used by military training simulators.

The mod changes Arma II from a military game to a zombie apocalypse survival simulator. Based on a 225 square kilometre map of a fictional post-Soviet country of Chernarus, most of one's time is spent hiding from zombies (rather than haphazardly shooting through them like in most games) while you scavenge ex-populated areas for food, water, tools and weaponry.

There's only one difficulty setting, which is hardcore. When you die you go right back to square one. This makes every player on a (50 player) server paranoid as all hell and one tends to find that interacting with other players is generally more trouble than it's worth. Especially since getting shot in the arm could lead to bleeding out over the next five minutes if you don't have anything to patch yourself up with or morphine to numb the pain - or even if they miss, the sound of their gun fire could alert 20 zombies to hungrily introduce themselves to you like the friendly fellas they are.

DayZ has reversed Arma II's waning sales into the Steam top 10 list, where it's been for quite a few weeks.

    Does anyone play?

I'm currently at a point where I don't HAVE to go into towns, I can get food from hunting, gutting and cooking animals. But I really need to find myself a compass because apparently I'm not very good at using the sun (and at night there's often too many clouds to use the stars).

That looks pretty cool. I need to get a new computer so I can start playing games on my comp.

Arma 3 is coming out at the end of this year and will have flashy graphics which this game is sort of lacking. Unfortunately I won't be playing that as I can't even turn on antialiasing Arma 2 without graphics lagging - even with a quad core and a 1gb Geforce, silly laptops.
DayZ will probably be available for Arma 3 upon release date as the person that made DayZ works for the company that develops the game; that is if it is not released as a stand-alone game.

Yep, me too. It's currently $23.99 which is "on sale" But I'm guessing before the week is out, they'll drop it down to like $15

Necro. Seriously, I stopped playing after I posted this thread. Once you don't need to go to towns it removes all purpose to the game. The bad performance on my computer really didn't help either. Sure, my computer isn't the best around but BF3 works fine enough, yet ARMAII lags at all times on low.

Also, all other players on that game are dickheads. One either finds a friendly (which requires quick typing because voice chat doesn't work very well at all) and then that friend is an idiot who ends up getting one swarmed with zombies because they don't know how to prone and sneak or they just instantly shoot at you. So I avoided other players altogether. What's the point in playing a multiplayer game if nobody wants to play together? The servers would also go down every hour or so, when I was playing. I'm not sure what caused that.

So when I finally had enough of DayZ I thought I might just take up playing ARMA II: Operation Arrowhead, seeing as I had supposedly paid for this whole game. Problem with that is that it's so buggy that it crashed every twenty minutes to half an hour even though DayZ never crashed in the time I played it. Ended up deleting the whole thing altogether.
