The follow sums up Spore in a nutshell:
1. Ridiculously easy
2. Repetitive
3. Worst. RTS. Ever.
4. Slowest. RTS. Ever.
5. Customization quickly gets old
6. Little-to-no replay value
7. Not worth the money
Yes. Also I'll add that you can get the only revolutionary component of the game as a stand-alone application, the Spore Creature Creator, for 1/5 the price of the full game. You can all the creatures you want to your heart's content and watch their movements be determined by its procedural animation methods as well as share your creations with other people, and you won't have to pay a single dime for all the other boring, repetitive parts.
Sorry.
I think they are making it sound worse than it is.
No, it's pretty horrible.
Well I still enjoy it a lot, so do many others.
I think more people like it than not.
So therefore I think you guys are making it sound worse than it is.
I'm pretty sure most people found it interesting the first couple of hours, posted their glowing reactions to it, then only realized how shitty it is a couple hours later.
As a game, Spore just sucks. As a creature creator, it is rather flashy and interesting. But really, the only parts of the game that seem to have been well-developed are the creature design tools, the brief introductory microbial stage, and the galaxy generator. The other parts of the game, including the other design tools, are either just shallow and repetitive with no replay value at all, are ridiculously easy, or were obviously added to the game as an afterthought.
Truth. I thought this game was going to be epic. I waited for like 5 years for this bitch to come out. Then it did and I downloaded it thinking it was going to be the greatest thing since the microwave and it disappointed me. It could have been worse but they f'd it up pretty bad.
Its good for when you're REALLY bored, but you begin to realise that your 2nd play through is the exact same as the first.
It could have been much better, more involved on the RTS stages, more options to do things differently, maybe a few more than 5 buildings lol...yeah, sure.
I definatly wouldn't say its forgettable though.
I still think the concept of the game is pure genius and innovativity (is that a word?) and we haven't seen a game that original in years, and I don't think we will for a long time.
*innovation
and anyways what the hell is so goddamn innovative about spore except for the procedural animation of the creatures you make with creature creator?
aside from that one thing, and maybe sporeopedia, there's nothing really new, creative, or innovative about the game at all.
yes innovation.
Oh I don't know, maybe the whole cell to taking over space idea, and the massive size of the universe?
Thats really what I was talking about, but yes the procedural animation of the creations is amazing as well.
The sporeopedia is a good idea but I wouldn't call that innovative.
"from cell to taking over space"
so you're saying that stringing a bunch of half-developed, repetative, boring together is what passes for innovation nowadays?
the story telling method of constantly zooming farther and farther away from the planet's surface until you ee the whole galaxy was innovative. but did it add anything to gameplay? did it make the player enjoy the hours invested into any of the half-assed games? not really.
"massive size of the universe"
you mean size of the galaxy, not the universe
granted, the galactic simulator was impressive. but it had so no impact on gameplay. they could have just had stars randomly placed in a blob without making it look like an actual spiral galaxy and the player would not have noticed a difference.
also, there are many other games that have huge galaxies for you to explore. spore is not at all unique in this, except that it more faithfully simulates a real galaxy in the manner that things are placed
