Default Is it worth owning both consoles?

And I don't mean the Wii. I've been thinking of getting an Xbox 360 because I know many people that own it rather than maybe two on my PS3. I just saw a 20% off deal and I don't know what to do. My parents don't want me to get it and like 75% of the games are for both consoles. The only games I want for it are Gears of War 2 and Ace Combat 6. But I've been thinking of getting this for a couple months and I know if I pass this deal up, I'd be thinking of it for the next six.

    What would you do?

I gotta buddy who owns a ps3, wii, and 360. He said it's great because of exclusive games, but you best get gamefly or something because it gets so pricey.

Since I just don't have the money to get 2 systems, just grab one and tell everyone else to suck it.

When I had to choose between a PS3 and a 360, the deciding factor was the PS3 controllers, I hate them - they are too small, the analogue sticks are too close together and its not ergonomic at all. The 360 controller felt so much more comfortable and well put together.

If you're only worried about exlusive games, then you cant really ask anyone elses opinion, if you want to play those exclusive games then you'll obviously need the right console, if you want to play all the exclusive games then you'll have to get both.

However this will eventually lead to a situation where you have friends who have a PS3, and friends who have a 360. If (for example) both groups of friends buy the new COD game, which console are you going to buy it for? Both?

I'd say it's worth having the 360 for it's large variety of awesome games, and the ps3 for the bluray, the amazing graphics, the ability to still play your ps/ps2 games, and the fact that you can look forward to the awesome games that have yet to come.

I had both until my 4th Xbox blew up. Imo it's worth it, but there's no way I'm buying a new Xbox.

the ability to still play your ps/ps2 games
The new Playstations can't play PS2 games. They removed that feature over a year ago.

I have both but my brother has my PS3 because I didn't really play it. I still play my 360 every now and again, mainly because my friends have one and we play online L4D.

I got pretty bored of both TBH but I prefer my 360 because of L4D and the online play just seems a little better. Although I do like the free online play for the PS3 and wifi included. I think in a few years though, the PS3 will have better games and it has blue-ray so it might be a better investment. LBP is pretty good too.

    I bought a PS3 for many reasons.

    1) The controllers. Rechargeable, wireless controllers and they feel right. I don't care for the 360 controllers as much. The bumpers are too odd IMO.

    2) Exclusive games. People jerk off to Gears and Halo but I've never found any of these games that interesting. Halo 3 is uber overrated. Every new FPS that comes out is labeled "The Halo Killer" Halo was axed a long time ago. Games like LBP, Killzone 2, Infamous, God of War III, Ratchet and Clank, and Metal Gear drew me in.

    3) Free online play. Say what you want about Live's awesome service and functionality but I have never seen any bad downtime on the PS3 service.

    4) Reliability. When I bought mine in June I didn't hear a lot of people complaining how their PS3 shat itself. Almost everyone I know who has had a 360 has had to replace it alteast once. I don't want to go through the hassle.

I do like the wireless PS3 controllers but I have a couple problems. I hate the L2 and R2 buttons because I already jammed them in one of my controllers, which sucks. Then on the other one, something happened with the analog so it feels gritty. Now I'm on my third. I take really good care of my stuff too so I prefer the 360's controller.

    I guess I never mentioned I currently own a PS3.

So the majority is saying go for it. But it goes like this,
My mind is telling me no! But my body, issss telling me yes!

So everyone agrees to just get it? If you are interested, go to slickdeals.net and you'll see the 20% dell thing.

I'd say get it if there are currently, or are going to be in the near future, a decent amount of 360 exclusive games you'd want. As someone already said, Halo is overrated, Gears 2 is boring, as was Fable 2 and I've never played Ace Combat. The only one I can think of that I bothered with and don't regret buying is Left 4 Dead. FF XIII will be on both, unless you live in Japan.

So it's really down to whether you like enough 360 games to warrant splashing that much cash. Personally I only bought one because I had nothing else to buy. Not the best reason to get one but I suppose I'm glad I did.

L4D is also for the PC btw. I've played both versions and I find the PC version to be far better. But like mtgmaster said, if there aren't any exclusives you want and you already have a PS3, doesn't seem necessary.

Tom Clancy's HAWK or whatever it is called seems like it will be like Ace Combat and that will be multiplatform. And I'd put my money on it that the Ace Combat games will make it back to Sony since it used to be on the PS2.

Hmmmm. I have played Left 4 Dead before and didn't really like it. Great, now I'm doubting myself again. I'll see what happens when Killzone 2 comes in.

Is Gears of War 2 really not that good? It looks so good when I look at it.

Gears isn't a bad game, but I just don't see what all the hype and praise is about. I think it is pretty overrated.

Besides the fact that there are very few good 3rd party games that don't have tacky motion controls...

Even with first party games, the Wii is pretty weak IMO. I got bored with Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart is basically the same it's always been, Zelda was fun, and Smash Bros is the only reason I still play my Wii. And wtf is up wtih Wii Motion Plus. So I'm going to pay an extra 20-40 bucks (throwing numbers out here but I think it is a safe estimate) for a device that will make the Wii do what it should have done from the beginning. Fuck that.

I like Gears 2 and Halo and Fable 2

Halo is overrated of course but that doesn't make it bad
Gears 2 was better than Gears 1
Fable 2 was a whole lot better than Fable 1
    None of them are boring.

You think there is going to be a new Xbox 360 deal anytime soon? I heard there was going to be a price drop bundle with Gears 2. Would you just wait it out or is 60$ off good enough for you?

$60 off is probably better than a price drop will end up being. I've heard talk that they may be planning a price drop on the higher end 360 models in April or May, but I don't know for sure. I do know that Microsoft is planning a retaliatory price drop whenever Sony decides to drop the price on the PS3, but who knows when that will be.

Man it sucks that Sony is forced to price drop, they will just end up losing even more money. I guess it's better in the long run and for the people that haven't bought it yet.

I guess you can say that. But supposedly Sony lost A BUNCH of money because of the PS3. If a system becomes stronger, more companies would want to make games for them so the price drop would be good. But if you price drop it too much, Sony is going to go to the shit.

Sony has lowered the production cost of the PS3. They have got the manufacturing process down to use less parts. It's only a matter of time.

Sony posted huge losses and has to cut a large chunk of it's work force. Losing money now would put them more in a bind.

Give it atleast another year and I think the PS3 will be a way stronger competitor. I think people forget that the 360 was out a year before everything else which gave Microsoft a bit of an edge in lower production costs and getting 3rd party support. I can see the PS3 dropping to atleast $350 this year. I hope. Or Sony got them selves in a pickle.

Sony is still losing money on the PS3, only now instead of losing like $400-some-odd per console, like they were before they took out backwards compatibility and technology got cheaper, they are only losing $100-some-odd per console now

If you can afford it then its nice. I have both, and I use them both. But the 360 gets more action because my friends all have 360s.

I decided to just buy one right when the price drops. Is it confirmed there is going to be one or is it just a probability?

Just a probability at this point without a PS3 price drop, but M$ pretty much said that they have a counter-drop ready for when the PS3 drops its price.

No, they're aimed at including young children, there's a difference.

Most of the games I've played are brilliant, but then again I'm not a huge fan of the overtly masculine types of games that litter the 360 and PS3.

Xbox 360 is the shit for it's variety of games, exclusive games(see Halo, GoW etc.), and its online. Wii is the shit because of the amount of fun you have playing it and the innovative controller. . PS3 is the shit for the blu ray player and exclusive games. There is good reason to get any of these consoles, at this stage they have all done well in their own respects.

I followed this very advice about five days ago. Man, I am in love with Little Big Planet (I already had a 360)

After having both for about 5 days I am gonna go ahead and say that I suggest owning both.

You could always mod your 360 and just download and burn your games.

Thanks Mr. E. It is a bit different though going from a PS3 to Xbox 360 and vise versa.

A PS3 has a blu ray player so it makes sense to buy one after you own a 360. But if you own a PS3 first, buying a 360 is just meant for even MORE games.

I agree with you though. I'm going to buy one hopefully within two months but I'm not going to rush it. I'm going to wait until a price drop and I get a 360 that is RROD resistant.

I personally think that there's little reason to buy both consoles. There aren't enough exclusives to justify anything like that. Aside from the fact that a fair number of the 360's exclusives end up on PC anyway.

My PC sucks ass though, we'll just have it at that. Also I don't really like playing games on my PC except online based games or Real Time Strategy games ( like Diablo or the Total War series). I prefer games on consoles.

PC gaming will never die. PC gamers just become harder to find. Besides, no console will ever beat a supreme tower setup, mostly because a great tower costs over a grand whereas consoles cost between 300-500. PC gamers never quit either, a PC gamer is a PC gamer till they die. Take for example, Left 4 Dead, which is a million times better on PC than it is on Xbox.

QFT. Also, Half Life 2/Orange Box and C&C (or any RTS for that matter) are other prime examples of this.

Not to mention that Console gamers don't have a snowball's chance in hell at beating a PC gamer at an FPS

    aka

    Mouse + Keyboard > Controller in FPS's

Except with how many people are playing console's now over pc's, most people prefer a controller to a mouse and keyboard. Probably because it's not so awkward.
