Thread: God dammit Hollywood, NO, NO, NO, NO!!

I also hear they are planning to make a World of Warcraft movie. Sigh. This annoys me for 2 reasons, the first flowing into the second. I like WoW, it is a phenomenon, and they want to cash in on it. Fair enough, however the things that make WoW what it is...don't really translate well to film. Really it is about end game PvP and raiding, playing with other people. The plot and narrative are almost totally lost due to the mechanics of the game, so I think it is likely that the movie will be WoW in name only, and I just don't see the point to that, which leads me to point 2 - they are missing a massive trick here.

Whilst the plot of WoW gets lost in the gameplay, if you step back a few years to the Warcraft games, we have a different story. The plot is much easier to follow as the gameplay drives the story forward. And I think the lore and stories of these games would serve the basis for some pretty good fantasy films. I think they are right to mine Warcraft universe for movies, but its like they are opting for coal over precious metal.

Again, it isn't something I lose sleep over. When you play the games (the same goes for any game), you get to see it's qualities and it is only natural that you want any movie based on them to be good, it goes the same with books and comics. And you see it time and time again, adaptations that could have been good, but don't quite manage it. And I think it is the same trap they fall for each time, borrowing the game title and little else, even though the game often has alot more to offer and the movie ends up suffering for it.

With Hollywood's track record, I think I am right to be suspicious over the quality of adaptation they will produce. And I do believe that they could so easily get it right, but for some reason choose not to. That is why I make threads like this. It is as if they would rather polish some coal than offer up some true gold. I am not asking anyone to care over this, or take time off to get annoyed, but surely I am not the only one who thinks this tendancy is a bit...lamentable?
