Give it a shot. As somebody starting fresh, the best piece of advice I could give you is to do ALL the trial missions and talk to people you meet~ Oh, and take some time out after your first few days to decide what you want to do in the game, and do some research & planning into the skills that benefit you most.

I just started like 2 weeks ago. I'm obviously not very far in, and my opinion on whether or not casual playing of the game can be fun may very well change later on, however so far it's been a blast for how little time I've actually invested.

To answer your questions though, I started a corp between a few irl friends of mine, and have no reason to leave empire space just yet. I plan to eventually outgrow this starter-corp and possibly move into an industrial one, but it's up in the air at this point.
