Cool PC games with low system requirements?

Me and a friend have been doing some LAN gaming recently. I have a decent laptop (2.0 Ghz C2D, 2GB RAM, ATI X1700) but my friend is running Boot Camp on a ~2 year old MacBook with integrated graphics. We are interesting in finding more games that both of our computers can run. We may have others joining us soon, but let's assume that said MacBook is the "weakest link" among all the computers.

Games we have been playing so far:
    Age of Empires 2
    Starcraft
    BF 1942
    Unreal Tournament GOTY
    Red Faction

Unfortunately, the CS 1.6 and all other original HL mods do not seem to work on my laptop. My video card drivers aren't compatible with OpenGL or something stupid like that. I spent a good while trying to find a fix for this about a year ago with no luck, and have since given up on it. I remember playing Sven Co-Op and loving it, but unless I find some miraculous fix for my video card, it is not an option.

    Any other games you'd recommend?

Ultima Online, connecting to a private server. You and your friends can play together, plus tons of other people in the MMO as well.

Rick: I don't know if I've heard of that game, I'll check it out.

Infernus: I'm a bit ashamed that I don't have it. I've played it ages ago on another friend's computer, but don't remember too much about it. From what I recall, its a bit like Dungeon Siege (although I'm sure Diablo came out before DS) which I really enjoyed. Definitely gonna check this one out again.

I also just realized that Warcraft 3 would most likely run on my friend's MacBook. That game was/is the shit. Any more suggestions would be great, thanks.

Yeah check into it, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_online doesn't do it much justice so check out a few links about it. It's pretty much the digital crack that predates WoW and if you acquire the software you can log onto emulated shards/severs for free.

You could try rome: total war

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome:_Total_War

My computer is ten years old and it can still run the game on low graphics settings.

I'll say it... runescape classic download. It is the best free MMORPG around.

UT2K4 runs pretty well on a bevy of different machines, and I LAN with a few friends every now and then, even though I can max out UT3 now. Not multiplayer, but Deus Ex is excellent, and I recommend anyone with older hardware to try it. I think they may even have a multiplayer mod out for it though, and it runs in both OpenGL and DirectX, plus *gasp, S3 Chrome and software modes.

Warcraft 3 Battle Chest. Only about $30-40 in the stores. It runs on almost any computer and is still one of the most played online games for PC. I'm always playing DotA.

AnonyD Nox sucks that game was so bad on so many levels.

I second Heroes III or Age of Wonders/2. Of course, those can all be played single comp so no need to LAN.

UT2k4 is a good alternative, too, though when we play we always have to unplug the router from the internet or it kicks us offline for invalid serial numbers.

I used to play WOW on my laptop - 1.4Ghz Pentium M, 1GB DDR, 32mb dedicated nvidia go5200.

I know it's a subscription game that involves $, but just throwing that out there.

Heroes III was plenty of fun until I realized there were cheat codes for it, then I never played honestly again.

yeah i did that for a while, but it gets real boring real quick when you cheat

honestly, once you understand the economy of the game, impossible difficulty only poses a challenge in low-resource scenarios, and the rest is cake

HoMM III was terribly fun, and I recommend it highly for low resource PCs.

However, I never did too well primarily because I was unable to manage more than 1 hero :/

this is because you're a woman

this is the recipe to success for HoMMIII : get a castle and as many unupgraded creature generators in the first week. Hire and extra hero and have the two range as far as you can, grabbing as many loose resources as possible. bring your strongest hero back to the castle in the first couple days of week 2

week 2 is developing a capitol, and upgrading one ranged generator for bonuses, then having your hero travel from mine to mine just killing the baddies while your second (or third, if there's a lot of open ground and resources, but generally there isn't) grabs the loose resources and flags all the mines

week three is upgrading creature generators and mage guild (if you're interested, but level 2 is usually good enough), loading every troop on to your big guy, who, close to the end of the week, you send out into enemy territory to wreak havok.

provided your combat tactics are effective (honestly not that hard) you should easily trounce the enemies' big hero, so they won't recover for another 2-3 weeks every time you bash them. rinse and repeat for great justice. Always keep at least 1 week's troops close to your home base in case another opponent shows up, and even have your second hero clean up the straggling loose monsters to develop some exp, get logistics and become a creature runner. buy a new hero for every castle you take over to flag all the loose mines and build an army from the new castle while your main hero gets reinforcements and heads into the next territory

hero building is always by personal preference, but air/earth magic and logistics are basics for eevery hero type. magic heroes should concentrate on getting wisdom, sorcery and 2 or 3 magic masteries on expert, and combat heroes should get offense, archery, defense and tactics. the rest is all flavouring.
