    Default Mass Effect 2

I just found out this comes out at the same time for PC and X-Box so I won't have to wait 2 years for a port (even though I'll still have to wait til the summer since I am a busy man).

Hopefully it won't have securom like the last one so I can download it illegally and use my illegally downloaded Blood Dragon Armor DLC from Dragon Age: Origins.

I love the first game. It's such an immersive world and I cannot wait for the next one.

Speaking of sequels, there are so many sequels being released this year it's not even funny. 2010 is going to be 2007 and 2008: The Sequel.

I hope not. 2007 and 2008 sucked I would not want to play a sequel to that. I just want to kill space aliens with my blood dragon armor and hopefully a staff of the magister lord.

    Mass Effect 2
    Bioshock 2
    Dead Space 2
    Kayne & Lynch 2
    Just Cause 2
    Dead Rising 2
(Last two's originals were released in 2006, but 4th quarter)
Starcraft 2 (probably, though of course the original is far older than those of the above)

The list goes on and on. I found a full list of sequels slated for release in 2010 here:

I never saw much of the appeal around Bioshock. It wasn't much of a RPG than just a FPS with an inventory.

it's a FPS with RPG elements. anyone that claims it's really an RPG is misguided.

On the other hand, RPGs have been becoming more and more action oriented as time as gone by. Turn-based RPGs are mostly unheard of anymore, save what's published by small indie developers or some of Square Enix's titles. And I don't think there's really any calculations and die rolls in Bioshock's black box like those that determine "hits," "misses," or "crits," right? There's no stats either, so how could anyone even argue that Bioshock is a RPG?

I have to admit that I finally bought Bioshock when its price went down, but I haven't really played it aside from some of the demo.

Mass Effect is a beautiful game with such an immerse back story/lore. In fact, the two are not even comparable.

I hope there's no driving in Mass Effect 2 or if there is I hope it's not 98% of the game or if it is I hope it's not as boring as before

The best was when I found out if you get out of a car to kill things they give triple xp and then I found out that thresher maws are way easier to kill with pistols than with the turret.

Most driving could have been easily skipped and was unnecessary, that isn't to say I didn't try to complete all planets... I just got to the base as fast as I could without really exploring.

Yeah, I skipped most of it for my second run-through of the game (mainly because I just wanted to unlock Singularity for a vanguard), but when I was playing on Insane difficulty I was a treasure / XP whore so I went around and did everything again, which was at least more interesting since the difficulty was up a bit and I was going out of the car to kill things. Although insane difficulty isn't very hard still, especially with a Vanguard that has singularity.

    hah, is that so?

also if you got out of the vehicle, were you still in danger of random insta-gibs?

Nope. That is mainly the part that makes it easier. You just run around in circles shooting it and since you're out of the car it doesn't sink back into the ground.

yeah. this illustrates one of the many reasons why the mako should be put out of its misery, even though exploring planets was fun in some ways.

graphically the planetscapes were unimpressive for a number of reasons, including the planet wildlife whose movements were eerily synced up. it also bothered me how the planets' surfaces were square-shaped "arenas." as for the driving controls themselves, i actually got used to them after a while, and they didn't bother me so much.

i do have to admit, however, that I would miss exploring and finding random resource deposits, writings from that matriarch, and the like. if they get rid of the mako that'd be okay with me, but i'd rather have an improved driving and planet exploration system.

I agree, the mako has gotta go, or at least be significantly reduced in importance. I like to play through games like this once as good, once as bad, and then make an indifferent run for 100% completeness, and that last run was brutal with all those damn mako missions.

I shall be purchasing and playing the shit out of this as soon as I'm done with DA:O, which means it may be a while cause I'm in school, working, preparing for an actuarial exam, and not very far into DA:O yet, but eventually I shall play this game with fervor.

what i do is i just put my game in progress to the side then pick up the new one. i then eventually return to the old game and finish it up in the somewhat distant future.

also, have you guys seen the ads for ME2? i can't put my finger on it, but i think they've done something to the facial expressions of the character models (at least the human ones) to make them more emotionally grabbing and life-like. it was especially noticeable during a monologue by shepherd where he was just standing in front of a black background. i think it had something to do with his eyes.

I noticed that too sycld. The people look a lot more like real people, at least in the ads. Hopefully it is representative of graphical updates in the game, because they look great.

Yep. I watched the trailer again, and it's more than just the eyes: skin seems to have a more translucent look to it rather than the flat flesh-colored matte, there is a deeper contrast between shadow and light, faces look more expressive, there is a marked difference between different textures beyond shiny and matte, etc.

Granted, the cinematic trailer's graphics will of course be better than graphics rendered in realtime, but from looking at some stills of actual gameplay, it seems that many of these improvements will be implemented in the game's graphics as well.

Sweet... it looks like EA is planning on giving us a stream of "free" DLC with Mass Effect 2 via their Cerebrus Network:

    http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/masse...atures;title;1

It's only free if you purchase the game new yourself. For used copies of the game, there is a one-time fee. To me, it seems like a very decent compromise: we get free DLC, while EA can still make a little profit on used copies of the game for those that want the DLC.

I think EA is losing a little bit of its evil...

I think it's a pretty sound business strategy to deter people from buying used, to be honest. They did the same thing with DA:O. Shale's 2 quests cost $15 if you buy them, but come with new copies of the game. People who buy used miss out on a valuable tank character and side quests.

Well, it's pre-downloaded on my PC off Steam... anyone tried it yet? I can hardly wait

there's also a mass effect 2 blood dragon armor for people that have DA:O, apparently.

oh, and of course you can continue your shepherd character from ME if you've completed that game. related to this, here's another interesting tid bit from EvilA, though it's also a little bit of a spoiler, as it concerns the ending:

    Spoiler

oh yeah, they're planning to make a ME3.

Mass Effect has always been a trilogy, I thought everyone knew that. The existence of Mass Effect 3 shouldn't be a spoiler or surprise.

christ, there it's out of the spoiler. the second time i mentioned it is outside the spoiler. now i'm not trying to keep me3 a secret since it's out of the spoiler and anyone who reads the post will know whether they want to or not they have no choice since me3 isn't a secret because it's outside the spoiler.

    are you happy?

I understand the centric point of the spoiler revolves around something much deeper than that, but I'm just pointing out where you were wrong.

oh man, you totally got me. you are the cleverest person in the world, congrats.

    moving on,

Combat is just as addictive, or even more so with its faster, smoother pace. There are essentially no defensive or support abilities besides taking cover and Unity; all special abilities focus on attack or disabling the enemy. Even medi-gel healing has been removed, as now you simply have to wait behind cover for a certain amount of time to recover your health. The game's pacing also benefits from having ME establish the universe, so the introductory story doesn't feel nearly as rushed. The new characters and location seem more interesting than in ME, and characters seem to express more nuanced opinions and to be more connected to their place and position. And reconnecting with old comrades actually felt better than I expected.

Can you have sex with the new Krogan teammate if you're a male shepard if not I'm not interested in this game anymore.

yes, you can penetrate the krogan anatomical equivalent of a cloaca

but the krogan won't enjoy it

And now I will continue to talk to myself in this thread about Mass Effect 2:

The place where there are no real improvements is with the RPG aspects of the game. The inventory system has been completely streamlinied, though same would say nearly oblierated. Now, for each character, when you leave the ship you choose armor and one of each type of weapon they can equip. That's it. There are no instalable enhancements to items, but rather permanent upgrades that can be researched on your ship, once you obtain or buy the upgrade information. In this respect, the game feels even more shooter-like than in ME.

The conversation option are basically the same. To gain paragon points, you have to be annoyingly obsequious and deferential. If you even look funny at the person you're talking to, you're a renegade. For example, at one point in the game I was surprised to see someone. The neutral conversation options was "Hello, how've you been" and the renegade option was "What are you doing here?!" which is a reasonable response to a surpise and not something particularly hard-assed. But at least you still know which responses generate which points, thanks to their location on your chat wheel, just like in the first game.

The "new and improved" aspect to conversation was suppose to be interuptions. When the other character is talking, you might have an option to perform a renegade or paragon-oriented interuption, as indicated by an icon on-screen. Again, to me what is considered a paragon or renegade option makes little sense. But really this adds relatively little to the game.

Finally, what struck me when I first went to allocate skill points was the far fewer number of skills in ME2 compared to ME1. Every class has only a number of aggresive skills and a single passive bonus skill. And each skill only 4 levels, costing 1, 2, 3, and 4 points respecitvely. There are no weapons skills, no armor skills, no paragon/renegade skills (good riddance), and no defensive skills whatsoever. That's right: no biotic barrier, none of that skill that automatically recharges shields, etc. And no medi-gel healing; now it's only used for Unity (which Shepherd starts out with and isn't levelable). All this contributes even more to a more aggressive, shooter-like feel with quicker combat.

That's pretty much all I can think of. Finally, if you're importing your character from ME1, you should have access to early paragon/renegade chat options, depending on what path your character took.
