    Default Old School RPGs

I just downloaded Final Fantasy IV: The After Years this past weekend and am loving it so far. It definitely brings me back to my days of renting Final Fantasy IV and saving up for VI. Anyway, what with remakes and ports, I've played most of the games I missed way back when, along with some newer "old school" games featuring 2D graphics and turn-based battles such as Golden Sun.

The last Final Fantasy game I played was IX, and the last I finished was VII. The newest Dragon Quest game I've played in IV, though V will probably be purchased eventually. Breath of Fire II is on the Virtual Console and will probably be downloaded once I finish The After Years. There is just something about those games that didn't have long animation sequences, CG cutscenes, and that only required a bit of grinding to defeat most enemies.

By far, I'd say my favorite RPG is Final Fantasy VI. Chrono Trigger was great as well, and Super Mario RPG was a favorite but playing it on Virtual Console did not do justice to my memories (linear with few sidequests and pretty short).

So, what is your favorite old school RPG? For this thread, I'll define "old school" as a game originally out on a 16-bit or earlier system or one that pays homage to those games.

I know this doesn't fit your criteria of "old school" but I consider it old school so I'm going to include it. I loved loved loved Legend of the Dragoon. Good story, excellent gameplay, long as fuck, challenging but not impossible, it is awesome.

I played through Breath of Fire and much of Breath of Fire II but stopped because the plot is lacking.

The original Breath of Fire(Capcom+Square, was sessy) Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, Earthbound, Illusion of Gaia, Legend of Mana. All of which were on the SNES(didn't have anything other than the NES and SNES growing up)

All of those games, that at one point or another I beat until I could not do anything else... wish I still had some of them

Legend of Dragoon was pretty great, except battles too forever. That'd the main reason the game takes 100 hours - each battle takes for-fucking-ever.

Baldur's Gate series. They have TONS of mods out there to keep it relatively fresh as well.

www.gog.com Has a list of classic PC RPGs like the entire Baldur's Gate saga, Icewind Dale, Fallout, Neverwinter Nights Diamond edition, and a bunch of lesser known but surprisingly as good or better games. On top of that, the games are cheap, DRM free, and right now there is a discount special on a bunch of games. Besides RPGs there are a bunch of other classic games. I just spent $40 on six games that I look forward to playing on deployment.

Wow, I'm giving it a shot.

So... what's the "Second Age"? Is that when UO was at its peak before whatever expansions ruined it?

Exactly. They strive for (and are incredibly anal about) era accuracy. The downside is, apparently (I don't leave town often yet, I'm still a noob character) that with all the newfangled Razor macros and stuff it's tough to get around without getting PK'd constantly. Again I haven't really left town yet but there are tons of people on there all the time. You can divide the player count of 600-700 at any time though by about 2 because you're allowed to sign in up to 3 accounts at once. Shoot me a PM or make a thread to invite others if you want to get together sometime for great adventures. My character is going to be a tank mage but I have a long way to go - regs are expensive as crap so I'm working on my tailoring skill when I'm not killing rats in the Britain Sewers.
I usually hang out around Britain near the bank or Moonglow.

I remember playing Ultima Online. It was my first mmo.
    Andy says:
prince of persia is more skill than hack and slash
    ShitFace says:
i dont think skill is a genre of game lol
    Andy says:
of course it is you have seen the crystal maze havnt you?
he says what next a skill physical mental?

So sycld did you get up getting onto UO?
I've got a pretty good moneymaking setup going so I can help you with some of the early cash flow issues if you want.

Yeah I dunno if I can get into the flow of it. If I get hooked on the game I'll let you know.

PM me here or msg me on the game's IRC channel if you need any pointers. If you haven't played before, there is a very steep learning curve and there are basically no instructions given.

Like many above said, Legend of Dragoon is definitely my favorite one, I have some really good memories with that game....

I also remember TLZ:Ocarina of Time. I remember a cold winter night I wanted to play so bad that I took a quick shower and didnt bother to even dry off, then played till I passed out... apparently I cought a fever and was having half-awake hallucinations of me trying to fight off an invading horde of goblins all fucking night.
The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge.
