    Default [ComicBookReviewClub] Comic suggestions

From now on let's use this thread to determine what book we will review for the next week.

To be as inclusive as possible, in general let's keep suggestions limited to issues that should be new reader friendly. Other than that anything is game.

The comic to be reviewed needs to be chosen by the Tuesday of that week.

    Everyone is welcomed to participate.

    For Wednesday Feb 15th

    My primary suggestions

    Amazing Spider-Man #679.1
    (W) Dan Slott (A) Matthew Clark
POINT ONE issue. Start reading here. Morbius the Living Vampire returns!
    Avenging Spider-Man #4
    ZEB WELLS (W) & GREG LAND (A/C)
Hawkeye drops in for a visit. Two stars of next summer's biggest films, together!
Secondary suggestions (basically any comic next week that's a #1)

    Peter Panzerfaust #1
    (W) Kurtis J. Wiebe (A/CA) Tyler Jenkins
    The Great Escape, part One
The city of Calais is the first city in France to fall to the Germans in the spring of 1940. A mysterious American boy named Peter rallies a handful of plucky French orphans and they must work together to survive Europe's darkest hour. From the writer of the critically acclaimed GREEN WAKE and THE INTREPIDS comes a new ongoing series: PETER PANZERFAUST, a high energy action story that blends Red Dawn with Peter Pan.
    G.I. Joe 2 Movie Prequel #1
    (W) John Barber (A/CA) Salvador Navarro
Perhaps the most dangerous of all the Joes--their combination of stealth, cunning, power and raw courage is nearly unmatched. But what unspoken bond do they share? Find out their never-before-revealed secrets in this prequel to the summers most anticipated action movie!
Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi #1
    (W) John Ostrander (A) Dan Parsons
On the planet Tython, in the center of the galaxy, an order of warrior monks strives to maintain peace and to balance the mysterious power known as the Force. But a stranger is coming-one who will destroy both peace and balance, and open the galaxy to exploration and conquest. This is where it all begins! John Ostrander and Jan Duursema of Star Wars: Legacy fame reveal the mythic age of the Jedi's beginnings!
    Comedy Option

    Political Power #24: Ron Paul
    (W) Marc Shapiro (A) Grey Thornberry
Ron Paul is well read. He speaks in complete sentences. And his views are often so far right that they make sense. Did I mention that he's a Republican with libertarian tendencies? Find out what makes this Presidential hopeful tick when Bluwater's Political Power: Ron Paul, written by New York Times bestselling author Marc Shapiro, has readers on both sides of the aisle agreeing to disagree.

    Another option:
    Avengers Annual #1 (One-Shot)
Simon Williams and his Revengers believe the Avengers' time is up and they've taken the fight right to the Avengers' front door. From the creative team behind Secret War!
Or are we trying to avoid one-shots?

No one-shots are perfectly fine but next week's Avengers Annual #1 is a second printing. Plus it's not very new reader friendly since it's part 2 of a story that started in New Avengers Annual #1. Also it wasn't that great of a comic and I'd rather not reread it.

Oh right I forgot about that. I read the Daredevil/ASM crossover and really liked it. I just added Daredevil to my pull list, so Daredevil #9 sounds good to me. (I know how you feel about Point Ones and Hawkeye.)

I'm actually excited about the Dawn of the Jedi series, as it's an era that's never been touched in the Star Wars Universe yet. It's on my pull list.

Semi-serious answer. With publisher owned comics I would say you almost never need to read the whole run to understand recent issues (especially long running titles like Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four). The best place (imo) to jump in long running titles is to start at the beginning of a writer's run. However there are usually other good jumping on places such as the beginning of a new story arc. (Btw Daredevil #9 is the beginning of a new arc) Marvel recently started the "Point One" initiative where certain comics were give a .1 after the issue number to denote a jump on point for new readers.

So yeah if you're interested in Spider-Man, you might like to check out Amazing Spider-Man #679.1. The reason I said "semi-serious" is because I'm not sure what you're into and I've never read Y: The Last Man so I'm not sure if ASM would interest you.

I did some digging and I couldn't find any new story arcs next week. I think KT. has a better resource than I do, though.

I use http://pulllist.comixology.com/ to look at upcoming comics. Nothing on my pull list for next week seems new reader friendly but I'll have more time tomorrow to look for something. I'm kinda banking that someone else will have a good suggestion. If it appears there aren't any new story arcs next week I'm sure between us there will be at least one comic we are already reading and we can review that.

I've been reading Avengers Academy and I was under the impression that next issue is the conclusion to the current arc. (fake edit: yep on the letters page it says "Next! The shock ending. ...")

Ok, I've went through the comics coming out next week and these look the most promising according to the solicitations

    Incorruptible #27
    (W) Mark Waid (A) Marcio Takara
Brand New Arc! Great For New Readers! Max Damage has seemingly driven Plutonian from Coalville, finally cementing him as a hero among the struggling desperate populace. But at what cost? And when the deal he made with Plutonian comes due, can Max be the hero that Coalville needs once again? Don't miss the beginning of a new era in this companion to Mark Waid's Eisner-nominated superhero series, Irredeemable!
    The Flash #6
    Written by FRANCIS MANAPUL and BRIAN BUCCELLATO; Art and cover by FRANCIS MANAPUL;
Struggling with the climactic aftermath of his battle with Mob Rule last issue, The Flash must solve a murder mystery that dates back 150 years! Is this case too cold even for Barry Allen? Also: Learn the origins of Central and Keystone City!
(I wouldn't mind reading New Mutants if you guys really want that but I was thinking it'd be nice to read something non-Marvel)

here are my suggestions for Feb 29th

    Amazing Spider-Man #680
DAN SLOTT (W) GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI (A/C)
Spider-Man in space! Trapped 22,300 miles above the Earth, Spidey has to rescue John Jameson from the ongoing machinations of Doctor Octopus!
    Batman Beyond Unlimited #1
Written by ADAM BEECHEN, DEREK FRIDOLFS and DUSTIN NGUYEN; Art by NORM BREYFOGLE, DUSTIN NGUYEN and DEREK FRIDOLFS; Cover by DUSTIN NGUYEN
A new era begins with the debut of the oversized, monthly BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED, featuring the print debut of the new Justice League Beyond!

In the Batman Beyond chapter, legendary Batman artist Norm Breyfogle returns to draw the Dark Knight of the future with best-selling writer Adam Beechen. In "10,000 Clowns," an onslaught of new Jokerz is plaguing Gotham City and the implications of this chaotic clown menace could have disastrous consequences for Terry McGinnis and Bruce Wayne!

And the debut of the Justice League Beyond is here, courtesy of the BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM art team of Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs, as the first two digital-first chapters are available in print for the first time! Batman Beyond is a new recruit in the mighty Justice League, but the team will be immediately tested by a very Neo Gotham-related enemy! How will the team work together to combat this threat?
Those are the only comics that look new reader friendly but I could have miss something. My preference is for ASM #680.

I wouldn't mind reading ASM either. I've been trying to get more involved in Spider-Man and I would really enjoy hearing others thoughts (and finding out what exactly is going on).

That being said.. I'm totally cool with Batman as well

EDIT: KT. look! I spelled Spider-Man right!!!

    Suggestions for March 7th

    Manhattan Projects #1
    (W) Jonathan Hickman (A) Nick Pitarra, Cris Peter
    'INFINITE OPPENHEIMERS'
What if the research and development department created to produce the first atomic bomb was a front for a series of other, more unusual, programs? What if the union of a generation's brightest minds was not a signal for optimism, but foreboding? What if everything… went wrong? Welcome to THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, a brand new, ongoing, monthly comic from the creators of THE RED WING. Brought to you by award-winning writer JONATHAN HICKMAN and possibly the best new talent of the year, NICK PITARRA, THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS is a look at history through a darker, much stranger, lens.
    Hell Yeah #1

THE LAST GENERATION OF HEROES IS HERE! Twenty years ago, the first-ever superheroes debuted without warning and forever altered our global culture! Now, the generation born in their wake fight to claim their place in a world evolved beyond them! Written by Eisner & Harvey award-winner JOE KEATINGE and illustrated by ELEPHANTMEN and POPGUN's ANDRE SZYMANOWICZ, HELL YEAH combines the over-the-top excitement of the original Image Comics launch with modern, innovative storytelling. It all begins with a giant-sized first issue containing a full thirty-two pages of story with no ads for the regular price of just $2.99!
