    Red face Dealing with acne

Hey, guys, I don't normally get spots and stuff, but lately I've been getting a couple of them on my forhead. I've cut out all Mcdonalds and BK out of my diet because I've heard they cause acne. What would be the best medicine that's available in the pharmecy? Also, what types of food contribute to healthy skin.

    Thanks a lot.

Well, I'm pretty sure acne has nothing to do with what you eat, zits happen because oil builds up in your pores.

Wash your face with one of the million acne scrubs.

Diet has very little to do with getting acne like absolution says. It's mostly hormones and hygeine.

Try something with benzol peroxide (I think that's spelled wrong but you'll be able to find it) or salycilic acid. Those work if you're getting blackheads or small whiteheads.

I was just lucky enough to get cystic acne when I started puberty. Those are the pimples you get under your skin that are just red, painful lumps. If you're getting those, acne creams and scrubs probably won't help. I had to go to the doctor and get antibiotics and some prescription cream to get mine under control. I don't have any major problems with it now, just a "regular" zit here and there but everyone gets those.

Being a pharmacy technician, the only oral medications I am aware of are anti-biotics. I have only really seen scripts for patients with horrible acne. For light acne, all I have seen is benzoyl peroxide and other topical products. Many of the ones also have weaker formulations over the counter, and that's mostly what doctors usually end up reccomending. Benzoyl Peroxide is your best bet.

Just keeping your face clean should help more than anything.

Another thing that seems to help me is to avoid touching my face too much. That's not a suggestion to avoid getting your hands near your face ever, but as a general rule of thumb hands are filthy & should be treated as such.

Yeah that's good too. I don't know how much it does or doesn't help acne, but your nose, mouth, eyes and ears are all great ports to let disease in. You'll get sick less if you keep your hands away from and out of the openings in your head.

    Salicylic acid.

Any acne treatment that does not have this in it as a active ingredient is a waste of time.

It's hard on your skin so you will need a decent moisturizer. But yeah. Salicylic acid. I have really terrible skin and almost cured myself of body acne with this neutrogena body wash years ago.

Since when does your diet not cause acne? I was blessed with an acne free life but my brother had terrible acne and he was able to help a lot of it by not eating specific foods that caused acne for him. He wasn't eating like shit food or anything, I forget what some of the foods were at this point but one of them might have been chocolate. Try cutting out certain things out of your diet and seeing how they affect your acne. Or just get acne cream or whatever works these days.

What you eat affects acne in two situations, and only two. They are:

    1. You are allergic and those unique foods set off some irritation or reaction
    2. You are smearing it all over your face.

In normal circumstances, foods like chocolate, soda, burgers, etc. have nothing to do with acne. If you want to combat it, you'll need an effective acne treatment, not some hokum diet restrictions. (Eating healthily, though, affects almost all bodily processes, so give that a try if you're not already. That doesn't mean cut stuff out of your diet; it means eat more healthy stuff.)

He wasn't allergic to the foods nor was he smearing it on his face. I don't know much about acne but I'm just going off of what happened with him. Maybe it was just him eating healthier but when he stopped eating certain foods there seemed to be a noticeable difference.

A million other factors could have caused that change, from environment to exercise to, well, getting older and getting over the acne. It's only fairly recently that studies have come out conclusively demonstrating the lack of a link between diet and acne.

I believe that for most people diet isn't necessarily a big factor in acne but I just want people to know that sometimes it is. He also noticed the difference very quickly. I mean just doing that alone wouldn't get rid of it but it helped significantly for him. After eating those foods again not too long after it did get worse again. Now as he is older he is just naturally getting over it so I don't think the foods bother him much anymore.

Why would you want to let people know this if you don't have any evidence for it? I know you're trying to help, but relying on anecdotes like this is exactly how urban legends get started. It would be better if Gwaihir could cite the peer reviewed research he's referring to, but it's good that that is what he's making his appeals to.

Whenever I eat nachos, I get a pimple on my chin. I have no idea why, but it only happens when I eat nachos from a specific restaraunt. A specific, crappy restaraunt. I've never had a pimple recur in the same spot twice, and I have never had one on my chin - the exception being when I eat those nachos.

In addition to using an effective acne treatment to get rid of pimples already present, you should also use a good facial cleanser that won't clog up your pores and won't dry out your skin, as the acne treatment will already be hard enough on your skin.

I normally have dark circles around my eyes (as do males on both sides of my family), but last year they had grown huge and started to become red with irritation and developed white patches of psoriasis. Part of the remedy included changing what I used to wash my face.

The gentlest thing you can use is Cetaphil, which is what I use daily. There are other facial cleaners on the market, with some marketed as preventing break-outs. I cannot tell you how effective they are, but you might want to look into them. Also, as I and others have said, be sure to use something gentle, as the salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide (which is, incidentally, a base) will be harsh enough on your skin.

Wash your face and clean with a proper cleanser and then apply some 'AkniCare Lotion' and afterwards 'AkniCare Cream.'

Listen I didn't take the time to research it but I know there is evidence supporting it. Like I said before I SAW it work with my brother when nothing else did. That is enough evidence to make it worth saying.

Put a towel over your pillow and change it every couple of days. Also wash your face or use a acne face pad before you go to sleep.

    I guarantee you'll see a difference

Well its true that acne isn't caused by food, unless its a certain food that sets off a reaction.

Like for me I had clear skin until this fall and I started breaking out very very badly, however, after cutting out peanut butter and tomato sauce out of my diet, I have very little acne.....

But if your a teenager, then its probably all hormones, Ive noticed unless its really allergies, then food doesnt affect it. Also im not sure how much it helps, but keep your body clean not only because of acne but also just because its a good habit.

However if you are an adult, simply "waiting it out" might not be the best option, because there could be more reasons than just regular teenage hormones.

Thank you for recommending this. Because of your post and a couple other recommendations I got a bit of this at the store, and I'm loving it. Everything else I ever used to wash my face was way too harsh on my skin to use daily, so I could either let my skin get dirty or wash it and dry out the skin completely (which leads to AWESOME flaking), but this is perfect.
