Default How do I stop this bad habit?

I chew my cuticles. I've been chewing my cuticles since I was 2 years old, and I have tried to stop several times but always went back. It is a subconscious thing now. Do you guys have any advice on how to quit it? I mean, normal addictions I can deal with, but this one has been a subconscious reflex for so long I don't even know where to get started.

I've tried that and I go through gum like the cure is in it. I can't afford the amount of gum I would need to chew for me to lose my cuticle chewing habit.

there is foul-tasting liquid that you can brush on your cuticles to keep you from chewing on them

I forgot what it's called but a lot of parents use it to get their kids to stop sucking their thumbs.

I wouldn't soak your fingers in cayenne peppers because you are bound to accidentally rub that shit in your eyes

Wear gloves all the time for a couple of weeks.

It'll be weird, but I might work.

What KT said. I used to have friends whose parents would paint their nails with whatever that stuff is.

It seemed to work I suppose.

Put pure Capsaicin on your fingernails. Just don't touch yourself.

My current plan of just trying real hard isn't working, lol.

I will probably end up buying some of that stuff that makes kids stop sucking their thumbs, but I am cheap so it will take me a while to get around to it. Peppers or capsaicin won't work, because I itch my eyes sometimes and prefer to not be in agonizing pain.

You don't need to buy that to stop.

The trick is to engage in a competing behavior. A competing behavior is a behavior you engage in that will not allow you to simultaneously engage in your target behavior (nail biting).

    2 Suggestions:

    -Wear thin gloves...not like ski gloves but any kind of glove you could tolerate to have on extensively until the habit goes away, or;

-Get someone to fidget with. Get anything...eraser, coin, pencil, fidget ring, pen...anything to keep your hands busy.

This is pretty much pulled straight out of my Behavior Modification class.

Masturbate instead. It's healthy and you can do it anywhere.

About bad habits, I have an atopic and extremely dry skin which is very itchy so I tend to scratch it. And that's bad. How can I control myself or how to make it go away? I mean I don't even notice when I start it and it's hard to keep my hands off.

I'm not sure what an atopic is, but for dry skin get some mega-strength lotion. Vaseline makes an unscented one so you won't stink like a girl (assuming you're not one), it's called Advanced Relief or something like that. If you have psoriasis or excema, go to the doctor. Nothing you can buy in the store will help much unless you have a really mild case, which it doesn't sound like you do.

    Thanks for answering

I've been seeing the doctor for my whole life and I've got about 10 different lotions, they moisturize my skin for a while but don't quite take the itching away. My skin would be so much better if I found a way to stop scratching.

I wear woolen gloves at night so my nails wouldn't hurt me so much :S (Yes I do it asleep).

Well, it's dry and there's eczema pretty much all over my body, scratching makes it worse, that's why I should stop.

Dip your fingers in aluminum powder in the morning.
