    Default Chiropractors

Who's been to one and can tell me anything (positive or negative) about their experience?

Last week something in my upper back got way fucked up, I had these horrible muscle spasms and I do mean BAD, as in I was contemplating going to the ER in the middle of the night bad. I got into the doc the next morning and he told me it's intercostal neuralgia (fancy medical speak for pain in the muscles and nerves between my ribs), gave me some muscle relaxers and Vicodin and sent me on my way.

I feel better when I'm taking the pills, but as soon as they start to wear off the problem is very clearly still there. I talked to a friend's mom who's a physical therapist and she gave me some stretches to do, I've been doing those for a few days with no help. I also went to get a massage and that helped a little for a while but the pain came right back.

Through reading and talking to a few people, the underlying problem with this can be that a rib head is slightly displaced and this would make sense because I just started jujitsu again so yeah...can see where that might have happened.

Several forums and also a friend of mine who sees one strongly recommend chiropractors but I'm on the fence about it. I wouldn't see one of the ones who think they can cure cancer, make you smarter, and cure anything other than musculoskeletal problems, but I'm still not sure this is the way to go. My friend says it helps him, BUT his problems always come back, so I don't know if that's just him, or if the chiropractor's helping him at all.

So, any stories or comments that might help me decide would be appreciated.

Chiropractors are hit and miss. Some of them are hacks, some of them work miracles. Don't pick one out of the phone book, go see someone recommended to you.

Oh, and make sure you trust your recommender.

Every time I go, my chiro fixes me right up. I actually went recently after neglecting the horrid pain in my back for a few months. Mind you I do have to go back because my back was so messed up once won't do it. I would say I am at about 80% now. I never had a problem with going to a chiro that was not recommended to me, but I guess it's personal preference.

Yeah, that's pretty true in any profession. Every dentist I ever saw sucked, until my friend recommended his and he turned out to rock (I'm a horrible dental-phobic).

Have you ever gone to one? If so how did it work out?

I haven't, but my cousin is one and my family is rife with back problems so I've heard all sorts of things about all sorts of chiros.
