I explained that biology and business require two different skillsets; Biology being very technical and detail oriented (can you name and identify the functions of the 9 major enzymes associated with Mitosis?) and business leaning more toward team-building, communication, soft skills, and relationships. Not only does my course of study demonstrate that I have both of those skills, but my internship and work experience also shows that I have the technical, IT-specific knowledge to make an immediate impact in a company. And rather than riding the fence and being afraid to take my feet out of the Biology water to jump into the business path, switching courses of study was a considerable commitment of both time and money that shows I am serious about this career; if I wasn't, I could have been applying for this job without bothering to study a business-related field.
Is it bullshit? Yep, welcome to sales.
