I'll sell you my old one for $300 + shipping as-is.
I got it custom-built about 5 years ago from either Cyber Power or IBuyPower (same company) for like $900. I can get the exact specs but I know I've upgrade the RAM since then to like 4GB maybe? and it's 6600GT video card I know, and I'm not sure of the processor. If you're seriously interested I can hook it up within the next couple days and get you pics and a proper spec sheet.
Let me check it out. I might be interested. I wont have the cash for one for a month or two. Im taking a trip next weekend, and after that Im gonna save up for it.
Ok give me a couple days and I'll put up specs and pics (gotta love my pink duct tape over where I took out the system monitor LCD cause it annoyed me)
It's a green case with blue LEDs inside, half clear case so its kind of bright
If you're not interested in playing games or performing other performance-intensive tasks such as running scientific simulations or designing visual media, I don't see any reason to get a desktop rather than a laptop...
And you don't even need a great one to do any of that either. Video cards are more for processing graphics in real time than for replaying pre-rendered animation or other recorded media. I don't even know if you need anything better than a good-quality integrated graphics chip for what you want.
Because my current laptop works fine. So I have that for when I want to move it around. Plus I have my laptop hooked up like a desktop. It never moves. Cost is one of the main things making me get a desktop over a laptop though. I can get a faster desktop for less money since Im not paying got something that has a monitor and is compact.
One of the main reasons Im looking to get a new computer is so that I can have windows again. I have Ubuntu on my laptop, and its great, but iTunes wont work with it, and all the programs to put music on my iPhone are garbage. I was actually thinking about getting a really cheap computer and using it just for putting music on my iPhone. lol
I put a stripped down version of XP on the laptop a while back, but it bogged it down so bad I went back to Ubuntu the same day.
Alright I can see where you're coming from.
Nonetheless, laptops are so cheap nowadays that there probably wouldn't even be a big difference in price between the sort of desktop you'd be interested in vs. a comparable laptop.
EDIT: Oh never mind... if you're not going to buy a monitor for it then I suppose you're correct.
You might balk at the idea, but if you want the most bang for your buck, especially if you don't care about the latest and greatest technology, you could consider a refurb from a trusted source. Even mainstream electronic stores like Best Buy sell them.
I might have to swing by the local Best Buy next time in around there. Didnt know they did that there.
Just remember - you get what you pay for.
It will be a couple more days.. got 2 exams this week and an out-of-town funeral to go to so I don't have dick for spare time right now
For what he wants to do, a mid-low range PC will last for quite a while, probably through to the next OS. I can't imagine the next Windows OS requiring more than 4 GB of RAM, and if it does then you can just upgrade. The one concern would be harddrive space, so don't skimp too much on that.
Processors no longer are getting faster. We've hit a wall with heat sinking that we haven't been able to surmount yet. You'll be fine for a while, as long as you don't care about gaming.
Im not worried about HDD space. I have a 1.5 TB eternal I keep all my stuff on. Plus another 200GB in my laptop, and an extra 80GB external for shits and gigs. But for the prices, Ill probably end up getting something with a 750 GB.
eternal hard drives never die
Damn it I forgot about this thread if I don't post pics by this weekend please PM me a gun so I can shoot myself
Here are some photos, I will get it plugged in and post some specs
The pink tape is to cover up the hole from where I removed the fan speed display, it was throwing overheat alarms in error so I just took it out.
Only problems with it that I know of is if you play intense 3D games it will sometimes lock up, and the SD card reader currently doesn't work, it used to work but I had to do some motherboard stuff a while back and I either plugged it into the wrong place or put a jumper setting on wrong. I never bothered to fix it cause I don't use it anyway, but it does work if you have the desire to plug it in right :)
The XBLADE logo fell off the side of the case, I couldn't immediately find it but if you decide to buy and really want it I'm sure its around here someplace, you'd just need to glue it on.
The inside lights up blue when it's on from the case fans. Didn't take a picture of it because you've probably seen it before and know what that looks like :)

edit: specs
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.81Ghz (technically this is supposed to be 64-bit but I've never run anything 64-bit on it so YMMV)
Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (activated and should be good but YMMV with windows updates if you catch my drift)
2GB RAM (there is actually more in there but Windows only recognizes the first 2GB)
nVidia GeForce 6600GT
CD/DVD-RW
115 HDD - can just take my personal stuff off and send you some e-presents, can delete everything but Windows/Office etc, or can completely wipe it if you want to start with a fresh install.. up to you
If you're interested I'm asking $300 + actual shipping costs, I'd have you pay me the $300 then when I shipped it you could pay that actual cost separately.
Ok so let me know, Slimer has been a good compy for me and I think the price is good.. just gotta get some stuff sold before we move this fall so I don't have as much stuff to move :)
rick scarf that is hideous what were you thinking when you purchased that fine specimen of ugly
also I will buy it if you load the harddrive with a sampling of your best porn
Sure, if anony doesn't want it and you were being serious
I might pick that up. I can always paint it. Ill let you know when I can get the money. I spent too much last night partying for Mardi Gras.
Cool no worries, its been sitting around a few months so it can sit around a bit more no problem. Just let me know when you're ready.
