God dammit Hollywood, NO, NO, NO, NO!!

So it appears that there are plans for a movie...of Shadow of the Colossus. God fucking dammit Hollywood. As someone mentions on that link, it should get people to play the game, which is a good thing, but other than that this is a terrible idea.

As I am sure, those who have played this game will tell you, it just wouldn't make the transition from game to movie. There is hardly any dialogue in the game and it has only the barest of plot pretences. The joy of this game comes from the actual experience of it, which is a pretty unique experience and I simply fail to see how this could translate onto the big screen. The link hints that they might write in bigger roles for some of the characters who are barely present in the game to try and give it more substance, however non of this in my opinion will lead to the successful capture of what made the game such a great game. Hollywood always do this, they tend to remove the elements which made the game great and replace it with a torrent of dissapointment.

I am not pleased with this news. Why should I bother caring? Purely because I love this game and I would hate to see it spoiled on the big screen, which is almost inevitable.

Plus, people like seeing good representations of their favorite IPs on the screen, because it invokes nostalgia, etc.

Discovering this game was like a revelation for me, it is a masterclass in game design. And it makes me sad to see games that I love, which I have fond memories of, being put up on the big screen and butchered in a terrible attempt to milk it's appeal. Faesce how can you not get this? Not only that, if anyone has played SotC, they will know just how unfilmable it is. And this isn't like LotR was said to be, it isn't because we lack the special effects etc to make it work, indeed the only thing they will be able to capture is the epic look, but I strongly doubt it will be able to capture the heart and soul of the game, it is something for which video games are the best medium. It can only really be expressed on a video game. And the changes they would need to make in order to make it a viable movie would uttery destroy it as a faithful adaptation, and it is Hollywood's seemingly steely determination to never do this that causes most video game-movie translations to be utterly shit.

The only way it could be filmable if it was some sort of art house movie, since the game itself is a bit of an art house game, but it just isn't viable as a mainstream Hollywood movie.

To sum up, it is just a horrible idea.

I did like the Silent Hill movie, which I found to be a master-class in framing shots and atmosphere, but the acting and story were "huh".

They really need to do a Dungeons and Dragons movie... I'm envisioning Matthew Broderick and one of the Wayans brothers.

Am I the only one out there who thought Shadow of the Colossus was just alright and not this amazing gift of God? Maybe I had to play Ico to really care about the characters but when there's little to no dialogue I really could care less about the story. I don't know maybe I have to play it again since I haven't played it almost 4 or 5 years but I don't remember being that impressed by it.

But that's not the point. It doesn't mean they won't ever read the story and it doesn't make the story any less good.

Christ, The Beach was a terrible terrible movie that I did not enjoy slightly. Someone lent me the book and it's now one of my favourite books. When I think of the film I don't get upset that they 'ruined the story' (which they did), I just think 'meh, they could have made that a lot better'.

However much you don't enjoy something should not affect your enjoyment of the thing you originally enjoyed. They're different experiences, only loosely connected by some vague premise such as 'title' or some semblance of the plot (which is basically all Hollywood are buying when they optioned the rights in the first place)

I was arguing two separate things.

One: I dislike when my favorite IPs are made into sub par products because it lessens the chance that someone else will get the same effect from the original product.

Two: I get emotionally invested in my hobbies, and do not find it strange.

i got emotionally invested in a video game when i was younger, but it wasn't so much the game and the characters that drew me in, just the sheer number of hours i wasted playing it made me attached to it as something I'd spent a lot of time building up

and then my buddy deleted my save file and i lost all 500+ hours of playing time on ff7 and said well that was stupid

i don't get emotionally invested in any media or stories, really, to be honest.

I don't think I've ever logged more than 20 hours into a game that didn't have some online component, and parts of games will stop and make me think. I do get really into characters (not into character, as in, when I play an FPS I'm not HOLY SHIT I'M DOOM GUY RIP AND TEAAARRR), but I really, really like good stories. Tales of the Abyss has some of the best character development I've ever seen in a game and the story is nothing short of fantastic, which resonated with me.

Then again, I guess I could be considered more in touch with my feminine side. I don't put on make up or weird shit like that, but I can be emotional. I also think there's a high probability that I'm mentally sick unbalanced is a better word.

I don't know, it has really been a long time since I've played a game with character depth and story. The jury will come back in a few weeks.

Ok this is just a very typical example of passive/active timewasting.

Video games are an active form of timewasting. You don't just turn your brain off while you're playing a video game, you have to think, make judgements and become involved in what you're doing to get anything rewarding out of the experience.

Movies are a passive form of timewasting. You sit there, you watch the movie and, sure, you might make judgements and have thoughts about the movie but really you're just being entertained by something made for your entertainment.

The plain and simple reason video games will never translate well to the medium of film is that they are simply not supposed to. They don't have the same raison d'etre. No one makes a video game with the intention of making it solely like a movie, you have to write a video game in a very specific way. Passive video games are universally terrible.

Similarly, no one has made a movie that gives you what a videogame does because a movie can not give you that active form of enjoyment.

It's a similar thing with the books into movies argument. Whilst books are also a passive form of entertainment, they are still much more active than movies because you are forced to imagine what you read in to detail in your head. Now because the human imagination is (generally speaking) much more elaborate than a movie will ever really be able to show, people will get pissed off at lame adaptations of books. Are they right to get so pissed off? Maybe somewhat because there have so far been exceptional movie adaptations of books so people see it as something that can be done. However, it should always be taken with a pinch of salt because it's so fucking hard to get right.

You just need a much bigger pinch of salt when it comes to movie adaptations of video games because it's pretty much fucking impossible to get right and, either way, a movie will never give you what the game gave you.

I could now get into a huge spiel about why it's incredibly easy for video games based on movies to be successful and brilliant but, honestly, if you can't figure that out for yourself then you're a complete retard.

Video games are an active form of timewasting. You don't just turn your brain off while you're playing a video game, you have to think, make judgements and become involved in what you're doing to get anything rewarding out of the experience.

Movies are a passive form of timewasting. You sit there, you watch the movie and, sure, you might make judgements and have thoughts about the movie but really you're just being entertained by something made for your entertainment.

The plain and simple reason video games will never translate well to the medium of film is that they are simply not supposed to.

Also, no. There is a difference between the way you interact with a video game and the way you interact with a movie. You are not a part of the movie you are watching. You do not change anything in the movie by watching it. It will be the same either way. When you play a video game you are a much bigger part of the overall experience. What you do affects the game and your mind works in a much different way. They are both generically forms of escapism but they aredifferent forms of escapism.

I mean you can't just say I'm wrong and not say why you disagree. Except about the timewasting part which is a word I used with a pinch of salt.

movies are a medium for art - they are used to make an overall statement, and they way the million little pieces of it are put together and assembled (lighting, shot angles, dialogue, other various idiosyncracies) is like the individual brush strokes on a canvas. People are moved by art, and there is something alluring about some movies based on the subject they touch and how they approach it. You can call it timewasting, and in the sense of watching your average Hollywood blockbuster, you'd be right. There are films that touch on the human condition, that comment (knowingly or not) on smaller aspects of life and these are interesting in of themselves. People will get involved with the characters because they see themselves or those close to them archetyped by that character.

So I mean calling it a timewaster was a pretty foolish thing to do, but I see what you mean about the levels of interactivity.

That does not change the whole active/passive thing. Just because you get emotionally involved does not mean you are actively enjoying a piece of art. It's still passive.

And my point was not about how emotionally involved you should/do get in an art form. It was about why specific art forms do not relate to each other as people expect/demand them to.

i think this conversation has already gone over the brink into the realm of "internet metaphysics," where the debate centers around how to define certain words like 'time-wasting" and "active/passive" rather than anything substantive or meaningful.

i think there is something incorrect about this concept that i have seen expressed by other people elsewhere. i don't think there is such a thing as "art" which can be completely abstracted from any particular medium and then expressed in any medium a person chooses. what is being expressed and the way it is expressed cannot at all be disentangled.

No, I agree with you on that. What works in one medium isn't guaranteed to work in another. That being said, movies are powerfully valid form of art in terms of giving you a living snapshot of a slice of life, or to make a statement of one form or another. Video games don't really fall into this category as they almost always opt for the most melodramatic route (suffering probably more from bad writing), terrible voice acting or sacrificing plot for the sake of more tedious gameplay.

I also hear they are planning to make a World of Warcraft movie. Sigh. This annoys me for 2 reasons, the first flowing into the second. I like WoW, it is a phenomenon, and they want to cash in on it. Fair enough, however the things that make WoW what it is...don't really translate well to film. Really it is about end game PvP and raiding, playing with other people. The plot and narrative are almost totally lost due to the mechanics of the game, so I think it is likely that the movie will be WoW in name only, and I just don't see the point to that, which leads me to point 2 - they are missing a massive trick here.

Whilst the plot of WoW gets lost in the gameplay, if you step back a few years to the Warcraft games, we have a different story. The plot is much easier to follow as the gameplay drives the story forward. And I think the lore and stories of these games would serve the basis for some pretty good fantasy films. I think they are right to mine Warcraft universe for movies, but its like they are opting for coal over precious metal.

Again, it isn't something I lose sleep over. When you play the games (the same goes for any game), you get to see it's qualities and it is only natural that you want any movie based on them to be good, it goes the same with books and comics. And you see it time and time again, adaptations that could have been good, but don't quite manage it. And I think it is the same trap they fall for each time, borrowing the game title and little else, even though the game often has alot more to offer and the movie ends up suffering for it.

With Hollywood's track record, I think I am right to be suspicious over the quality of adaptation they will produce. And I do believe that they could so easily get it right, but for some reason choose not to. That is why I make threads like this. It is as if they would rather polish some coal than offer up some true gold. I am not asking anyone to care over this, or take time off to get annoyed, but surely I am not the only one who thinks this tendancy is a bit...lamentable?
