aw cute
doze are purty good
"Chariot" violates the laws of physics.
I'm glad the cute Roman with the seahorse-bat-dolphin painting was able to invent mosaics.
Ha ha the one about the Roman shields cracked me up.
Good job man.
this is good
bookmark'd
Your comics fucking suck
I didnt look at them but I will later.
annony that was not nice:(
also: lol
Thank you everyone :)
I don't think it does?
Anyhow if a hasty neutrino can violate the laws of physics then I'm pretty sure a comic is allowed to too.
haha I do like your description, but oddly enough i did base it on a real mosaic...
hippocampus
These are excellent.
I am most pleased.
Because neptune is usually associated with being on a chariot, duh
Yeah ok, so it's not surprising that the god of chariots would also be the god of horses...
...doesn't really explain why the sea god has domain over these things. maybe it was through synthesis of neptune with another god. all i know is that in the old vedic system of hinduism, horses were the domain of indra, who was the equivalent of jupiter.
or it just is and asking why is stupid. probably this.
EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neptune...unus_equestris Apparently Poseidon was associated with horses before the association with the sea. It looks like the association is explained through the god's violent nature as the "earth-breaker" as well as the association of horses with underground springs. And it might be by the influence of the Greeks that Neptune was likewise made to be associated with horses, by synthesizing some aspect of Consus with Neptune under the epithet "Neptune Equestrus."
Uh are we all looking at different comics?
I mean woof your art is amazing as always but from the comic perspective? Meh.
Thanks atmosfear.. shame you don't like them as comics, but i suppose no comic is universally considered to be amusing.
I mean I tried to temper my negativity because I want you to keep posting your artwork. I really do think you excel in that regard (durr, to my worthless, untrained eye, anyways) but there must be a medium which better fits yours talents and comics just don't seem to be it.
Then again, I am partial to the long-form web comics like OOTS and to a lesser degree 8BA. Even xkcd has character development, though it's more the development of the author's voice than any plot-driven development.
Most webcomics suck for the year or so while the creator is trying to find his voice.
yeah jeeze atmosfear give him a while to develop before smashing his dreams
increase the number of comics shown under "Latest Comics"
make the subtitle "hand-drawn comics by woofness" or something
i'm not sure about linking each comic to the next one - visitors may tend to browse backwards given they get shown the most recent comic first, plus nothing happens when you click on that
there is a typo "subjec" on the contact page
layout: having the title below the comic is fine in itself but the title is also at the left which spoils it and it's awkwardly separated by the date, which appears both above and below the title, and the navigation links, and but now that i'm scrutinizing all this stuff having nothing to do with the comics themselves, the varying font sizes are bugging me out
i think it'd be better if the vertical scrollbar is eliminated completely for people browsing in reasonably sized windows by re-arranging stuff
Woofness, your comics are fine. IMO, I think you need a little more focus on what direction you're going to take your concept in.
Broadly speaking, having a narrative or some sort of continuity between each comic (beyond all of them are from roman), because people generally prefer to get drawn into a story that is slowly revealed. This is why poorly drawn comics (like early questionable content, OotS, etc.) still managed to have a stronger draw on people. With all the Romans and the name of the comic, I kind of expected a little more of a storyline to string together this hilarious little moments you've thrown in. If you're interested in it, having a lead in to why a roman is getting charged by a chariot and a characterization that allows for him to use grass to win will fill out the comic a little more.
The successful comics that lack continuity generally have much stronger foci than small misunderstandings (the mosaic is still my favourite, and a pretty good example). Think the Far Side, xkcd or SMBC. The art is generally lacking, but there's much more in those comics to pull someone in, generally through dialogue and playing with the reveal. It's not like you haven't done this yet, though - like I said, mosaic is my favourite for pretty much this reason. The thing is that these comics are generally successful because tons of ideas all get released fairly quickly, leading to a funny little quality through quantity situation.
It's not as though you haven't demonstrated capability with the batch of comics you've released thus far, though. There's nothing that's bad about them, they just feel unfocused, which distracts from their conceptual potential.
Actually, a fantastic example of beautifully drawn narrative coupled with a few non-sensical one offs is the Abominable Charles Christopher.
An important resource as an artist is also collaborating with others. This doesn't necessarily mean you work with them, just find things you like in your medium and talk to the people who made them about what you liked. You'd be amazed at how much you can pick up that way.
I am quite new to the whole idea of comics, at least in a more deliberate form (I'm sure everyone has scribbled a comic down in a school book) so it is taking a while to get used to. Also in the other sense of medium, I am currently using inks and brushes which is once again a novelty... I never enjoyed painting very much, preferring the better control that pencils offer, but am now finally beginning to enjoy the challenge and different results it produces. That said I might try out using pens/markers which seem to be the more popular choice amongst most contemporary comic artists.. still very much at an experimental stage.
Thanks for pointing these things out. I have changed the subtitle, and corrected the typo. As to the alignment, text, etc.. I really am a complete novice when it comes to website design. I have very little idea of how to correct even the simplest things.
If you had the time or inclination I could allow you access to change the few things you mentioned? I am trying to keep the site as basic and uncomplicated as possible at the moment, rather if it worked simply and well than be cluttered with unnecessary links, and and so on.
Thank you for all the feedback. I see what you and atmosphere mean about lack of focus or direction. My initial idea was to have each comic as a standalone strip. I am personally quite lazy when it comes to browsing webcomics and prefer something which I can just drop into at any point and be amused by. I really like the Far Side, and wanted to be able to do something similar in the sense of simplicity..most of Larsons cartoons are a single panel. I like the challenge of condensing a fairly complex joke or idea to a form where it is easily read but loses none of its intended impact (not to say that many of the ideas in my comics so far are complex, only that I could technically have doubled the number of panels for each idea)
To begin with I was preferring to use no or as little dialogue as possible, but with the more recent concepts I have had I am using more. I was also thinking of bringing in recurring characters, without going so far as a storyline.
Really like this. Have only skimmed it before but a more in depth read today and it has grown on me.
One of my favourite comics is probably Buttercup Festival which doesn't really have a story line but is I think very nicely drawn.
TL;DR: Once again thank you all for you comments, I will give them all some thought.
woof :)
when you get to 23 comics, we'll discuss aesthetics and i'll help make any changes you like
i should mention that the simplicity of the current layout is very good
standalone comics are fine, and dialogue-less comics are great
don't pander to people whose personal prefs happen to differ
as far as medium, stick with the brushes if you're comfortable with them. it really helps make your style unique.
i've been reading ctrl + alt + del for nearly 9 years hoping that it'll get good
read only the first and last comics
read only the first and last comics
repeat daily for 9 years
I changed to using a fountain pen for the latest comic but with the same ink. I can manage more detail and I don't think makes it too different?
They are getting better man, shit is getting REAL.
I love these.
I really like "Rule of Thumb"
awesome thanks.
quite a few people didn't get rule of thumb initially, but I am glad you like it. its actually the first one that i drew.
You're doing a good job. Keep it up.
I'm really enjoying this. keep it up.
why is this in flames?
edit: moved it to public areas and stickied it. I like it that much.
I see someone submitted it to /r/webcomics about a month ago but it only got like 2 upvotes so to help ya out I submitted it again
Oh, well thanks awfully chaps! :)
I assumed at the time of posting that flames would be the most frequented of the forums.
I only browse this site using "view new posts" so it's all one big forum to me.
bad news i got zero upvotes
put them on 9gag
link it ill upvote it
too late its days old
which strip did you link to?
There will be a new one up in half an hour.
I try to make it every monday and friday, and have managed so far.
nice colouring
I hope they didn't take out your funny bone.
nah, just the mastoid.
mastoid is the gland that causes excessive masturbation right?
I was born with 5 if them.
Facebook'd liked your webcomics.
new comic is aww/lol
I haven't had trouble interpreting any of the comics but then again I have a basic understanding of Ancient Roman culture and history. If some people find your comics "too high-brow", well fuck them. You shouldn't have to cater to the lowest common denominator.
They are too high-brow for some people, but thats kind of what you want. You have a specific audience and you are providing them with something they havent seen before. If people want to know what it means they'll ask, and then you've got people LEARNING
you are practially a university, but with a better colour budget and online presence.
alternatively, you can start doing marmaduke comics?
I now have enough comics up to be able to put ads on my site from project wonderful, I got as far applying and being accepted as an advertiser then when it came to it didn't really want to mess the place up. That said these would be fairly decent ads, mostly just other peoples web-comics.
What do you chaps reckon? Do you notice or care about ads on other sites you frequent? I have no idea how much money it would generate with the paltry amount of traffic I get anyhow, but at the moment with paying for drawing materials and everything else its becoming a fairly expensive occupation.
I've never cared about ads at xkcd.com or explosm... or ctrl+alt+del but you can put them up, I'll click for ya
Maybe you should sell tshirts. Ads for other webcomics doesn't seem like a bad thing.
I caught up on your comics today. I'm not entirely sure if I get "A Day In The Life". So like the sheep used the man's house?
No to us a walk and nice scenery is a nice and relaxing change of pace but to the sheep being in the comfort of a house with a roof and furniture is. Its a take on the materialistic values of society.
It's a take on dis dick
I don't know why, but I just don't find them funny. I can understand why they would be considered funny to others, but no laughs or smiles come from me. If a lot of other people are enjoying them though, then grats to you.
They're high brow you idiot, you don't laugh, you chortle.
Pretty much that yeah. I just thought it seemed an amusing concept. I like people to take what they will from them too, so I might have a number of things that could be found amusing in mind.
I have thought about tshirts. Have had two made to see how they would look, and will continue to do more once I have money and am happy with the drawings (lol).
I read this like 3 different ways to make this post even more funny to me.
Nick(1): I DUNT GERT EEET
Nick(2): I find this amusing, but in order to be the hipster I am, I'm going to be ironic and say I don't find these humorous at all. Ha Ha Ha.
Nick(3):BLAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGG GGSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
But let me just add, I, in no way, get "Quiet". I understand it's called "Quiet" and a silent man is looking out the window to see a forest.... and then I am lost with da beech.
the scene is fucking quiet.
How can you not get a scene being fucking quiet?
Then I got it. I understood the quiet issue, I just thought there was a giggle for me to get.
But I do like your artwork Sr. Woofness
well in the comic description he mentions how not all ideas are jokes but sometimes a thoughtful panel can be a good thing
you just have to go the actual comic page rather than just reading the front page.
I just click the links to see the next/newest comic. Because I'm hXe like that
well i mean different strokes
coq woofness is not going to show you his boobs
Don't ruin his hopes and dreams. He's just human.
And I even highlighted what I said by asking you to be Facecasualdiscoursebook friends with me.
Yeah, sure.
Site has been up close on a year now. Quite entertaining re-reading this thread. I have finally decided to introduce a story instead of doing one off comics. They were probably a good thing to do to get used to the style and whatnot but can't really say I am particularly pleased with any of them. So yeah, starting from now (yesterday) am doing weekly updates with a little more time and effort put into them.. might not be very funny, but hopefully moderately amusing.
oh
So now we know your real name.
pretty sure its been revealed before now, if it is even my real name (it is)
hows your site doin traffic wise?
