Dungeons of Dredmor

So I obtained a copy of Dungeons of Dredmor (Nethack for hipsters?) and I'm rather pleased with how fun a game it is. Rather than mumble on about what I like, I figured I would involve you assholes in my playing experience. Call it a dedication to masochism.

I've played the game for a couple weeks so far, so I'm not totally brand new, but whatever.

the Game

It's a roguelike dungeon crawl with customizable skills. Pick 7 at the beginning, run through 10 levels and kill Lord Dredmor at the end. There are Warrior based skills (armour and weapon proficiencies), Rogue based skills (cooldown abilities, dodging etc.) and Wizard skills (mathemagic?). There are three difficulties and the option to turn Permadeath on (no save files). There are also a shitload of crafting skills, with varying degrees of usefulness.

the Proposition

Select a difficulty for me (Easy, Regular, Hard). I'll have Permadeath on no matter what. Select 7 skills for me. I'll try to beat the game and, at certain crossroads, I'll have you guys make decisions for me while I chitchat about different aspects of the game.

If you feel like a boss, get the game and play along with me, selecting a different build. We can compare scores at the end or some other circlejerky thing.

the Caveats
For skill selection, I won't accept useless builds. All builds must contain:

• 1 or 2 weapon proficiencies
• 1 crafting proficiency
• at least 1 magic school

These are just the minimums for a build. If you can think of an optional challenge, i'll give it a shot.

I have not gotten past level 2 on Going Rogue.

I'll get started playing Tuesday around midnight or so, screenshotting and captioning and will update the next morning.

Apparently, dual-wielding is still bugged, so the higher end levels actually subtract from the stats they say they're adding to.

Also, if you're gonna be all roguish, you should really get Archaeology. Shitty artifacts become sources of experience, you can reroll artifacts every 80 turns and recharge all Krong anvils one extra time. The reroll is also exploitable, because after a certain point it just starts adding effects instead of replacing effects.

I'm glad that people have posted suggestions for builds instead of arguing about pointless shit uih.

ps if i beat the game i'll give you all free livestrong wristbands

I sucked at this game.

I did some combination of blood-drinking, psychokinetics or whatever that school of magic was, blood magic, one weapons school, dual wielding (sometimes shield specialization instead)...

I also suck at this game

Well, I beat the game on dwarvish moderation permadeath with the shittiest build

swords, dual wielding, armour use, deadshot, vampirism, smithing and berserker rage.

i was one-shotting everything from floor 2-9, then had to be super careful on floor 10 because archdiggles are amazing assholes

also, vampirism scales of magic points? I had artifact embossed serpentine plate that was amazing, but I ended up using a crafted fine bronze armour because the lifeleech was a much more effective damage reducer than points in block/damage absorb.

I've been experimenting with wands and they seem to help me do a bit more decently on Going Rogue. I usually die when I open a door with a room full of bats behind it though.

i had a game where the first door i opened had a Deth behind it. That was fun.

my current build (that i have to restart because the game decided to crash and wipe my save file) was swords, vampirism, archaeology, blood magic, astrology, crossbows and tinkering.

I didn't want to take crossbow, but starting without one is fucking impossible, because you leech far less than you take.

Deth is about as tough as a zombie; I've beat him at level 1 on Going Rogue a lot of times.

wow I just got pretty far in a Going Rogue run and then just randomly died for no reason.

I guess that's pretty hardcore, but it really makes me want to not play this game anymore.

Just got the Bloody Mess achievement! My moustache golem and I are a well-oiled fighting machine

i keep thinking ahead to level 10 and think that there's no way your summons could effectively deal with archdiggles and robots

at least on dwarvish moderation, those things hit like a ton of bricks and are tanky as fuck

well my nanite swarms are my primary offense right now but i'm only on floor 3

also the second summon in the golem chain sucks balls

oh after a week of not playing, I started playing again and suddenly the last boss showed up and I murdered him and beat the game.

My score was 88664.

man i had to explore every damn room on level 10 before i found that asshole.

blobs of corruption and archdiggles were a huge pain in the ass when you have 0 magic

fun fact: nanite swarm is gamebreakingly good

also, blood magic + obvious fireball is retardedly effective as well. What skill tree is the nanite swarm in?

it's the third last skill in the golemancy tree

there's no reason to consider taking the last two skills in the tree

also it's actually called thaumite swarm or something but that's dumb

I just played it again with the dlc and beat the game with a score of 2601392 on going rogue with permadeath on

i should get a legal version of this game
