I'm a poor college student looking to buy some furniture for his room. I just want a reasonably comfortable love seat and some chairs. Problem is that everywhere I look, love seats are over 300 dollars. Chairs I can find for a reasonable price fairly easily. Any suggestions where to find a love seat for no more than 200?
Craigslist has some really nice stuff for cheap if you are patient. Also you might try big lots. They sell junk but if you don't use it a lot it will be fine.
Like Bifford said, Big Lots or craigslist are the 2 best places to find stuff for. Just be careful with anything bought from craigslist, sometimes people sell complete shit furniture on there in order to get rid of it and make money off of it.
Try a garage sale or looking in the local newspaper.. Thrift stores can get the job done too. No one has to know where it came from..
If you want to buy a new love seat, Ikea has one for $250, if you can swing $50 more.
Otherwise, go with the above suggestions.
One way to help ensure that you're getting something decent is to target in on the ads that say the seller is moving out of his or her house. It's less likely that they are just trying to unload complete junk.
And for the love of God if you are going to buy something on craigslist smell it first.
See if you have an AmVet (American Veterans) store around you (it's like Goodwill), when I was in high school we used to buy couches there for like $40 just to use for seating at parties 'cause we knew they'd get trashed.
Drive around every weekend until you find someone throwing something out.

Look for places that sell seconds. The furniture might have some minor damage or flaws, but it'll be new and cheap. I got my sofa for $175 that way and it's really nice. The damage is a snag about 8" long on the back but I don't care because that part is against the wall anyway. Personally I'd never get a second hand couch unless I knew where it came from. That's just disgusting.
Also you might want to PM Richard Scarf. I hear he sells some cheap furniture.
